We, call on the NZ Government to urgently demand the Israeli authorities immediately end the inhumane blockade of occupied Gaza, and allow the international civilian flotilla boats currently sailing to Gaza, safe and unhindered passage to their destination.
Supported by NGOs in Gaza and by civil society around the world, and with several Kiwis on board, the Freedom Flotillas is currently heading for Gaza with a message of hope and solidarity for the Palestinian struggle for peace and justice, and to end Israel’s illegal siege, genocide and occupation of Gaza.
The combined flotillas plus global solidarity action confront what governments, corporations and institutions have failed to do —to stop genocide, end apartheid and demand accountability under international law.
Like previous peace flotillas, the unarmed civilian boats to Gaza pose no threat whatsoever to Israel. However, in light of Israel’s record of illegal interceptions, attacks and seizure of previous Gaza-bound boats in international waters, we call on the NZ Government to urgently demand the Israeli authorities immediately end their inhumane blockade of Gaza, and allow the flotilla vessels safe and unhindered passage to reach their destination.

What is missing from this list of signatories are the trade unions.

“The safety of New Zealanders is paramount”
This is the message coming out of the New Zealand government in relation to Israel’s abduction of New Zealand citizens from vessels of the Gaza peace flotilla lawfully sailing on the high seas in the eastern Mediterranean.
I doubt that any of the New Zealanders on the flotilla would appreciate that sentiment. To them the lives of the people of Gaza are paramount.
Israeli diplomats will correctly interpret the MFAT statement to mean “You can violate the law of the sea, you can disallow freedom of navigation, and you can kidnap our citizens with no just cause, but please do not kill or mutilate them because that would cause us severe domestic embarrassment and would be detrimental to the interests of the State of Israel”.
New Zealand, which is quick to send its forces to the Red Sea when “freedom of navigation” is threatened, or to the Taiwan strait in the absence of any actual threat, is silent when the State of Israel systematically violates freedom of navigation in Mediterranean.
The New Zealand government will no nothing meaningful to protect its citizens if Messrs Netanyahu and Trump are the ones violating their rights.
It will do nothing to uphold the principle of innocent passage and freedom of navigation on the high seas if the State of Israel is the offender.
So the New Zealand state will not defend freedom of navigation and won’t defend the rights of its citizens under international law when instructed not to by the US or Israel.
Instead it blames its own citizens for exercising their rights to travel to Gaza to oppose a genocide (in which New Zealand is complicit) and to bring humanitarian aid to millions of starving Palestinians.
The colonialist regime is a disgraceful coterie of cowards which has abandoned its own people in order to better serve Mr Trump and Mr Netanyahu.

There is no relief in waking up, however. Israel has inflicted a real nightmare on me and every one in Gaza City when it ordered us to evacuate to the south.
Maybe the south is less dangerous than the north, but it is not a safe zone as they claim. What’s more, there is not enough space for all the people of Gaza.
Dangerous or less dangerous, we are all destined to die one day.
My family and I decided not to go south.
If death must come, it can find us in Gaza City – the place where we were raised and where we took our first breaths and our first steps.

In an email exchange, the other excuse proffered up by The Standard editor Lynn Prentice for denying the genocide in Gaza, is that it is up to the ICJ and ICC to make that determination. Conveniently for Prentice and others like him, that determination will not come until the genocide is safely over.
One day there will be a reckoning.
When the mass graves are uncovered, when the collapsed buildings are excavated, when the Gaza population register is updated.
One day everyone will claim that they were always against this. I am here to to bear witness that the anonymous authors and moderators at The Standard will never be able to make that claim.

Trump has just ordered Netanyahu to stop bombing Gaza ‘immediately’, after what Trump deemed to be a favourable response from Hamas to his ‘Peace Plan’.
In return Netanyahu reportedly expressed surprise, claiming that Hamas response is not favourable.
Will Trump back down? Will Netanyahu ignore Trump’s order?

Hamas has submitted its response to US President Donald Trump’s peace plan, with the group agreeing to hand over administration of the enclave to Palestinian technocrats and free all Israeli captives.
The Palestinian group’s response did not address the crucial issue of its disarmament, but it said it was willing to “immediately enter” peace negotiations through mediators.
In a video address following Hamas’s statement, President Trump said he believes Hamas is ready for a “lasting peace”, as he called on Israel to “immediately stop bombing Gaza”.
Israel, however, has continued its deadly bombardment of Gaza, killing at least seven Palestinians since dawn.
