Spanish Prime Minister announces that Spain will withdraw from the UEFA World Cup if Israel is allowed to participate

EKO People and planet over profit

While Israel commits mass atrocities, its football team is scheduled to play in the World Cup qualifiers against Norway and Italy in a few days. But football officials have just signalled that UEFA could vote on Israel’s suspension as soon as this week. It’s still not confirmed yet, and the US is lobbying hard to block the vote from happening. Which means we only have a day or two to counter the US and Israel’s genocidal lobby machine and demand European football federations force UEFA to bring this to a vote – which they can do if one-fifth of UEFA countries demand it.

Tell Ireland, Spain, Turkey, Iceland and other UEFA members: force a vote, and suspend Israel from UEFA! https://act.sumofus.org/go/734467?t=2&akid=153501.23138487.Wv2iFu

We’ve just dug into UEFA statutes and we discovered that even if UEFA officials cave in to US pressure, UEFA members can still force a vote by demanding an extraordinary meeting. But we need at least one-fifth of UEFA members to do so, which means about a dozen countries.

We know this works. The same day Russia invaded Ukraine, UEFA members called for an extraordinary meeting, and within three days they voted to suspend Russia.

The Spanish Prime Minister announced that Spain will withdraw from the World Cup if Israel is allowed to participate, and UN experts also just announced that FIFA, UEFA and all sporting bodies must suspend Israel. So now UEFA officials are under enormous pressure, and many of them are in favour of a suspension. But we’re up against the most powerful forces in the world. Our people-power is needed now more than ever.

Leslie Bravery is a Londoner with vivid World War Two memories of the Nazi blitz on his home town. In 1947/1948 His father explained to him what was happening to the Palestinians thus: “Any ideology or political movement that creates refugees in the process of realising its ambitions must be inhuman and should be opposed and condemned as unacceptable.” What followed confirmed this assessment of the Zionist entity a hundredfold. Now a retired flamenco guitarist, with a lifelong interest in the tragedy of what happened to the Palestinian people, he tries to publicise their plight. Because the daily injustices they suffer barely get a mention in the mainstream news media, Leslie edits/compiles a daily newsletter, In Occupied Palestine, for the Palestine Human Rights Campaign. These days, to preserve his sanity, he enjoys taking part in a drama group whenever possible!
