Winston Peters‘ address to United Nations:

In his speech to the UN, Winston Peters referred to what he called: “The international order that has sustained peace for the past 80 years stands on the precipice of breaking down.” He also declared that: “Palestine does not fully meet the accepted criteria for a state as it does not fully control its own territory or population.” For the Palestinian people there has, at no time been a sustained peace, the mass displacement and dispossession of approximately 750,000 Palestinians in 1948, known to Palestinians as The Nakba, led to the establishment of the State of Israel and the growing loss of Palestinian land to Israeli annexation never ceases.
Peters declared to the UN that: “Hamas have no place in any future Palestinian State. They know only hate.” What he failed to acknowledge is the reality that, for years, various governments led by Benjamin Netanyahu propped up and helped finance Hamas, in order to weaken the Palestinian Authority and divide power between the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. The purpose was to prevent any advance toward the establishment of a Palestinian state.
Foreign military occupation and population–control inevitably produce resistance, both armed and otherwise. Armed resistance is recognised as legitimate in international law. Resistance movements are, of course, subject to international law and perpetrators should be held responsible for all violations. Nevertheless, Hamas was elected to power and has declared its willingness to take part in elections – history did not begin on October 7.

This vision includes holding democratic Palestinian elections the day after the war and was shared in a wide-ranging interview with Osama Hamdan, the senior representative of Hamas in Lebanon. Speaking to Mondoweiss, Hamdan, emphasised the importance of Palestinian self-determination in the aftermath of the current assault on Gaza, in addition to several other topics, including Hamas’ demands before re-entering negotiations on a prisoner exchange, the resistance group’s motivation for Operation “Al Aqsa Flood,” and how regional politics have been reshaped in the wake of the October 7 attack.
