Nicola Willis blames US tariffs for GDP crash, but the tariffs didn’t come into effect until August

Nicola Willis is claiming the GDP crash was caused by Trump’s Tariffs and not her own disastrous right wing austerity experiment but the tariffs didn’t come into effect until August!

The tariffs began in early April 2025 (10% rate), and were only raised in August, their effect on trade flows, demand, and thus GDP would be felt some months later, not immediately.

If GDP numbers are for the “last quarter” (for example the June 2025 quarter = Q2 2025), then the tariffs had been in place for only part of that quarter (April-June). That limits the amount of impact they could have had in that period.

Also economic effects of tariffs aren’t instantaneous: businesses need time to adjust, exports take time, supply chains respond, etc.

Nicky No-Boats fucked the economy with her Free Market austerity experiment. She has hollowed out public spending budgets and borrowed $14billion for tax cuts which include $3billion to landlords.

Willis believes as a matter of free market faith that if you cut back on the State, the market will step in and do it cheaper, it’s been an utter failure and we are all bearing the brunt of it!

Look, I appreciate many of us were heart broken when Jacinda didn’t use her once in a generation MMP majority to actually reset the entire economy, and that heartbreak (alongside being manipulated by culture war bullshit) made you vote for a Government none of you had read the fine print on, but know you know all National, ACT and NZF care about is implementing their donors interests at the cost of the common good.

It is time ti kick these right wing arseholes out before they cause more damage, because Trump’s Tariffs WILL cause even more economic carnage in the next quarter.

  1. Damned – the clowns on the far right need a rigorous lesson in what happens when you fail the people you are (massively over) paid to represent.

National are not a safe set of hands or the economy – and neither is anyone else that has supported the housing Ponzi scheme, mass low or no wage migration, and the systematic destruction of public services.

    • Exactly….she’s saying ‘people’…i.e., the electorate, stopped spending once they heard of Trump’s tariffs.

Have you ever heard of such garbage ..

Most of the electorate are so poorly read andso politically ignorant that they wouldn’t have a clue about what
Trump is doing or the ramifications
      of a tariff.

None of that would stop them from going to Briscoes to buy a toaster or some bath towels if needed.

What ‘Nikki No Boats’ has done is tanked the hospitality and construction sector in unison by a.) cancelling all the construction projects the were underway, or well down the track to a start date, thus creating a mass exodus of highly skilled people to Australia at the same time losing both the tax and spend money from those people….

And …b.) Firing a significant number of the highly qualified and well paid workforce in Wellington who propped up the hospitality industry amongst other things.

And let’s not forget the $650 million down the swanny from the ferries debacle…the list just goes on and on and on and on and on …….

      3 strikes and you’re out!!!!!

  2. “It was Labour! It was Labour what done it! Honest, Guv!”

When even Roger “throw the poor in the bin to save a few pennies” Douglas is telling you to resign, you know you’ve fucked up.

  3. Maybe stupid bitch Nicola Willis and stupid bitch Todd McClay and stupid bitch Winston Peters should have been working to build relationships with human-run nations that aren’t slapping tariffs on us, then?

Oh wait… turns out they did the opposite. Sounds like it’s their fault.

  4. She doesn’t tell you that her government is exposing NZ to greater risk from USA by increasing dependence upon it, instead of joining saner nations in decoupling from their dependence on US markets and supply trains.
The future is in BRICS and the South. USA’s economy is going to be ground into the dirt by China and the BRICS, we best not go down with it.

  5. Pity the selfish could not see past the tax cuts NZ could not afford .This government is spending and borrowing more than the last government did in the pandemic .What are they doing with it ?sinking 1 billion into Cook straight and spending $44 k on pavlova .Wasteful spending every day while increasing poverty .

  6. So the Nats are ALL playing the “Blame Game” i.e. has to be someone else’s stuff-up so we are not responsible in any way! How par for the course for this incompetent lot. I nearly threw up when I read Luxon’s rant showing his support and utter admiration for Willis – it was so over the top as to sound totally insincere – just verbal diarrhea. Where do these dolts come from? It’s as clear as the nose on your face Willis isn’t fit to be a Finance Minister. She has no background, no knowledge, no foresight, no humility and lacks basic honesty. She makes me cringe. And how Key can make his dumb-assed comments beats the hell out of me. HE PUSHED LUXON INTO THAT JOB. He would be best to shut-up as it’s making him look just as stupid – talk about the ‘Three Stooges’!

  7. I find it hilarious that this government were super quick to blame the “so-called” economic woes “inherited” from the previous administration was due to poor economic stewardship rather than external world economic factors (Covid, supply chain dismemberment etc) and yet when similar assertions are directed to them the cause is the world economic situation.
This in addition to the FACT that National were super supportive of the previous government’s spending during COVID at the time (and even wanted more spent), yet now they bleat on about the previous government being too free with their spending and this was the cause of the current situation. When they get caught lying then they blame external factors.

It was clearly obvious how bad Willis was in the election debates at the last election campaign and up against Robertson and how embarrassing and cringe worthy the whole spectacle was to watch. It was clear that Willis was indeed incompetent and was only saved and not scrutinized as she should have been by an inept paid off MSM and bankrolled by the cartels to enact paid for policies.

Interesting the shyster who has clearly not moved on and believes he is somehow still relevant is rushing to defend Willis.

She would have been gone by now if Key was in charge.

Clearly the caucus doesn’t see a problem with its leader of finance minister.

    • I think you’ll find Luxon & Willis have killed their brand. It will take some new and untainted far-right austerity clown to make that party electable again – plus the elapse of some not inconsiderable amount of time.

    • Go and blow yourself trumpet.
      The fundamental problem is this.
Back in the day, in 1936 to be precise, a few good ol boys hatched a plan to * buy farmer stuff and things at below cost then ship it out to a winter bound EU and once there, those stuffs and things were sold for fortunes. Fortunes the cockies who produced such goods never saw.
The apple and Pear Marketing Board, the meat board and the dairy board too were used to leverage AO/NZ farmer goods away from farmers and into privateer scum control and all done from the urban environments of Auckland and Wellington.
UK and EU farmers got right proper fucked off with far better product and dangerously and competitively too rolling up fresh as a daisy in the middle of their winter so they created the EEC which once armed and trained excluded AO/NZ farming goods imports.
      * Read threaten then extorted. I laugh as you twerps meander about with your brain fartery and mumbo fiscal jumbo. Willis had no clue as to what she was getting herself into. If she did have an earlier understanding she’d still be running while screaming to anywhere on Earth who where the populace couldn’t speak English.
What we’re seeing now, this minute, just outside is the culmination of The Great New Zealand Institutionalised Lie. The great lie that’s polluted our politics and our economy since refrigerated shipping.
My prediction is simply this. Those who did this to us must come clean and take the hiding OR cling to the current narrative and get a proper fucking spanking later on.

  9. Ok so none of this is a surprise. I feel a deeper plot afoot. Even me, not an economist, knew this would happen with their policies. They are obviously tanking the economy on purpose to fuck everyone but the richest people. It is a way towards a kind of enslavement of the masses, who are the ones who suffer the most. But not the rich guys, right! They just keep on getting richer. Take covid, who got rich during that and who got broke snd went to the wall. Stop clutching your pearls and work out what is really going on.

    • We may be watching in real time, the ushering in of a new age, the age of corporate feudalism. Riches for the rich, war for everyone else.

  10. She is so dumb ,event trumppy and the fister would know thatit is the end user who pays the tariffs not the seller thousands of miles away .So how something applied in August fucked the economy way back in time like june is another case of the old John key smoke and mirrors rock star economy .

  11. It doesn’t matter how smart or dumb Willis is as she is just the handmaiden of Atlas network/ project 25. It could be any old muppet in that job because they are just enacting an agenda endorsed by these type of right wing governments the world over.
