National, ACT and NZF have over the last year let in 140,500 new mostly-young workers, predominantly from India, China, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Fiji and South Africa, while 201 Kiwis flee the country EVERY SINGLE DAY!
Both Labour and National over the last 3 decades have used mass immigration as a lazy GDP bump rather than invest in us as a people to expand our own population base.
Like everything, all Parties have allowed the free market to work it out rather than protect our own people AND migrant workers from being exploited!
Auckland has ground to a fucking gridlocked stand still because it’s size has grown by 17% without any of the extra revenue to pay for that growth!
At some point we are going to have to have a serious conversation about mass immigration and how it is killing this country!
You can’t bring that huge number of people into NZ each and every single year without there being intense cultural, political and social friction.
Here are 5 ideas.
1 – Halt all immigration coming in for 5 years so the infrastructure can catch up while offering amnesty for all current overstayers.
2 – We have to incentivise Kiwis into lifting their fertility rates and heavily subsidise childcare and maternity leave – we need us having more kids to keep up with the population requirements so we don’t need to keep importing so many people.
3 – Lift our refugee numbers with wrap around services – we have an obligation as a Liberal Progressive Democracy to provide haven for those being damaged on a warring planet.
4 – Ensure every single migrant worker coming into nZ are automatically enrolled in a migrant Union to ensure they are being paid the same as domestic workers so bosses can’t use
5 – Bonded education – pay the fees and provide a living allowance plus cheap accomodation to all domestic Kiwis training to be teachers, drs, nurses, and all other public service roles and jobs – they get the education for free in return for 5 years bonded service in NZ.
These 5 ideas allow us to show kindness, prudence and build our own population up.
Allowing the free market to simply push out anyone with skills to bring in cheaper work forces for exploitation IS NOT A FUCKING IMMIGRATION POLICY!
As the planet burns, these trends are are only going to become more extreme, we deal with this now or run the risk of enormous damage by the end of the decade.
Increasingly having independent opinion in a mainstream media environment which mostly echo one another has become more important than ever, so if you value having an independent voice – please donate here.

I saw a paper from the future, it’s title was
“Western Liberal Democracy; A Failed Experiment”.
The date was obscured so I couldn’t quite tell how far into the future it was written.
Failed or corrupted?
If we halt immigration for 5 years, our health sector and the aged and disability care sector would collapse.
Bad idea
Lol, it’s funny how you confuse ‘Ryman wouldn’t be able to make profits’ with ‘We couldn’t care for our elderly’.
This is trivial. Nationalize everything, no compensation. And deal with the need for essentially completely unqualified rest home assistants by making that one stream for school leavers joining the National Labour Service for two years to serve in.
MK You shouldn’t be allowed on this blog. Saying ‘This is trivial. Nationalize everything, no compensation.’ That is just whacko and irresponsible. Remember what happened in Chile. They were thought to be moving in that direction. Too simplistic, childish talk. If you can’t contain yourself don’t drop in – go to Kiwiblog and shake them up. We need to apply our minds in a balanced, wise, thoughtful way. And it doesn’t make any difference what nation you relate to, we need thinking people all over the world coming together, some more than the dissolute others. There used to be a saying that people were wrong in their top storey – we just need to remember this and plan round it. And when that fails think of another, better plan.
I agree, Cinder. Perhaps our health system would be put under further pressure if immigration is reduced – I agree that’s highly likely. The counter factual is that lower immigration would also mean less pressure on the health system, simply through lower patient numbers.
However, what we are currently seeing is the addition of even more pressure to the health system through increasing immigration in a cynical attempt to raise house prices thus making owners feel wealthy and start spending again, therefore increasing the chances of the incumbent CoC being reelected.
It is a sick con-job ponzi scheme.
1000% agree Martin, We did used to have bonded educators and it worked extremely well. Young or new teachers would be then placed where the education department required them and the school communities needed them to be for around 3 years I believe. But hey like everything else some political idealogue’s broke a system that didn’t fixing. Although in my opinion you will never be able to stop immigration you can certainly take effective measures to slow it down in order to get your own house in order. And yes our refuge intake is lax by international standards. But the political class of pussies we have now know it’s not really a vote winner and resources $$$ are required to house, feed, support and integrate them into Aotearoa/NZ. So that won’t be happening under this coalition of divisive social arsonists.
I ended up in the local heart ward last year. They had photos of the registered nurses who worked in the ward on the wall. Of the thirty, 19 were Indian, 4 were Chinese and 7 were pakeha. The hospital system would clearly collapse without new immigrants.
Not true Francis James as many of our NZ trained Nurses can’t get work as recently a cohort of newly trained Nurse graduates around 40% could not get placements so we need to stop bringing in foreign Nurses. The National government have a track record for doing this they brought in thousands of Phillipino Nurses leaving many NZ Nurses out in the cold.
Good points, Martin. One comment I would make, is that we can and should be a lot more sensible with services for refugees.
When you look at _legitimate_ refugees entering as such, these are people who have been forced out of their countries for illegitimate reasons and want to return. We should prioritize helping those people, people like Palestinians who want to take the entirety of their nation back, people like Tamils from Eelam who want to liberate their people from Lankan predation. Give them a home, give them training, and support them to return to live in freedom. Unfortunately, bad actors in NZ have often prioritized bringing allies of ‘israel’ here- traitors like Kurdish terrorists or ISIS opponents of the Syrian government (at least up until ISIS destroyed Syria last year). They cause nothing but problems, just look at than 2021 New Lynn attack or Golriz’s deranged rants against the people of Iran as it stands up against ‘israel’ with military force.
Certainly immigration needs a rethink.
The first thing is not to ban it outright, but to restrict it to manageable proportions. Though it is fabulously high by international standards, a cap of 1% of population – about 53 thousand at present, or half of current levels, is a fair starting point.
Of that, about 10k could be temporary Pacifican workers, whose presence in NZ is in part a form of aid.
The bulk of migrants should be qualified technical folk & or their immediate families.
Allow another 10k for spontaneous refugees, family reunification above working age, and all the other difficult categories. But that 10k is a hard cap – once it’s filled, that category closes for the year. Having a hard cap like this will reduce Immigration service workloads to manageable proportions, and allow proper scrutiny of who is being let in.
Harden up a little on categories like deportable crime. In principle, no criminal should be eligible for citizenship – we don’t need them. How the BottleO bandit, Ravi Arora, remains in NZ is hard to believe, and how he retains any property that he obtained as proceeds of crime also demands explanation.
Good article Martyn, I agree with 95% of it except the point about refugees. I’m living in Aus at the moment and there is big debate here about the intake of these people and the baggage they are bringing. I love that word ‘wraparound’….its basically code for plenty of taxpayers dollars that get thrown in their general direction. My condition for entry in to ‘Hotel NZ’ would be 100% employment within two weeks of arrival, maybe through the agricultural sector until they get on their feet
The other obvious control on immigration is to make it respond to unemployment. When unemployment exceeds, say, 3%, no unskilled migrants should be admitted, and no work permits rolled over.
NZ must be governed in the interests of its people, not for scumbag Ozzie banks nor starvation wage employers.
Give them jobs driving tuktuks*, which are leased from car companies who are forced to pay excise duties on their fat, spacegrabbing, energy dependent and inefficient goods to which we are addicted. Small cars would have special lower rates. Roads would be tolled, and large vehicles would have special roll rates even if they were buses. The tolls would go towards the road maintenance with small money spent from other sources. Local features would be people dressed as Marvel characters towing rickshaws perhaps fundraisng for sport tours and meetings, and cute little decorated horse and carts doing tourist routes.

“We have to incentivise Kiwis into lifting their fertility rates. . . ”
Good luck with that. Across the world, across cultures, when you give women the choice of whether or not to have children, or the ability to control the number of children they have, they either choose not to have children, or to have fewer children.
From Singapore to Hungary, and points in between, it’s the same story.
Immigration destroys cohesion and culture and the very identity of society/country (for obvious reasons). It’s why countries that maintain a racial/cultural identity (e.g. China, Japan, Russia, Poland, Hungary) have virtually zero levels of immigration. The so-called “Great Replacement Strategy” (considered a “conspiracy theory” for some reason) that was pushed by Tony Blair’s Britain and spread like wildfire across most Western nations, was supposed to create a melting pot of humanity. Instead it has wreaked havoc, both economically and culturally in all those that have embraced it. The fact that race, religion and culture are historically isolated in the many geographic regions across the planet should make it self-explanatory that forcing them all to mix in a government enforced harmony was always doomed to fail. Welcome to 2025.
Besides creating a GDP sugar-hit bump, another (sir john) Key reason why our government love immigration is that these same immigrants tend to vote rightwing. They are importing their supporters. How convenient.
As tangata whenua, I feel like our traditional hospitality and manaaki is being taken for granted, and frankly, they are taking the piss.
Similar to critics of IDF genocide in Gaza being derided as “antisemitic”, those who oppose unsustainable levels of immigration are here demeaned as racist or xenophobic.
Rather, we simply want our infrastructure and services to be boosted before the waves of immigrants flood in. If we don’t, then everyone suffers, and social cohesion is destroyed while working conditions and wages are further diminished.
Climate change will bring in hundreds of thousands of climate refugees sooner than you think – we need to have our infrastructure and social services (funded by a fair and progressive tax system), up and running before the massive influx occurs. Otherwise, racism and resentment will destroy our lovely little bunch of beautiful islands.
If only our elected “leaders” would truely consider the bigger picture, longer term view, while caring for our country. I simply don’t see it ever happening with these self-entitled arrogant pricks.
