NEW YORK TIMES: Mr. Kirk, 31, a close ally of President Trump, was shot while speaking at Utah Valley University. The authorities said a person of interest was being interviewed.
I was never a fan of Charlie Kirk.
I always believed his rhetoric and the conservative values he championed were deeply damaging to civil society.
Bullying young Uni students with the absurd certainty of his white Christian nationalism always came across as crypto facsist meets Pubescent Brown Shirt.
So I am no fan of the man, nor his message, but sweet Zombie Jesus, his assassination today on a Utah University Campus is a dangerous cultural inflection point in American History, the magnitude of which could bring the United States to a chasm of division and disruption not seen since the civil war.
Kirk’s influence amongst a whole new generation of young Republicans is beyond enormous, it was a God fearing, spittle flecked, MAGA force of nature and it will combust with news of his brutal murder.
His Martyrdom is being performed as we speak on Fox News and the backlash his assassination will launch could dangerously spark something dark within the American Psyche.
Charlie Kirk will become a Free Speech Martyr and his far right ideology will birth a rough Beast who shall burn Bethlehem.

People are already comparing it to the 1968 MLK assassination wrt the fallout this will have (i.e. a s ort of martyrdom). Just like MLK spoke to black people providing them a voice that was silenced by intolerant hatred, so was Charlie Kirk who spoke for young conservatives now also silenced by intolerant hatred. Charlie Kirk spent a great deal of his time debating his detractors (and he often won the argument) and apparently never incited any sort of violence or intolerance.
Twitter is absolutely crazy right now. MSM especially is getting a lot criticism today since they continually mark anyone to the right of Marx as “fascist” or “Nazi” – it’s a dangerous rhetoric since it instils a confidence in unhinged people that the murder of folks like Charlie Kirk is not really a bad thing – forgetting that what goes around comes around.
MLK and Kirk also both believed in treating people as equals.

Kirk condoned and celebrated political violence on multiple occasions, but most famously in relation to Pelosi’s husband being critically injured in an attack from a MAGA supporter, and when a Democratic lawmaker and her husband were shot dead by, again, another MAGA supporter. He said the political left should be exterminated, he said people with guns should start firing at the border. He celebrated the genocide in Gaza where innocent children have been found to have sniper shells in both their hearts and heads.
His brand was about denying people’s existence let alone equality. He called MLK a bad man, and African Americans getting equal rights a bad thing. He did not treat people equally. His entire brand was built on white, Christian, misogynistic nationalism. He espoused the Nazi conspiracy theory of white replacement, and thought gun deaths were a fine price to pay for a revisionist reading of the Second Amendment and unrestricted access to military-grade arms for civilians. Of course, it’s easy to say it’s a fine price to pay when it’s people on the left and school kids paying the price. This is the first time a right winger has paid the price and look at the unhinged response. There was a mass shooting where far more innocents were killed and not a peep from the right. Not a fucking peep when a Democratic lawmaker and her husband were shot dead by a MAGA supporter just months ago. Not from the right, or the fucking president. The hypocrisy is staggering, only beaten by the complete rewriting of Kirk’s legacy.
Who said he should be punished by death? Not me. I just don’t think his cause is comparable to MLKs and the irony that he said gun deaths were acceptable for the second amendment wasn’t lost on me.

Many Right Wing tears are being shed for Charlie Kirk today and it strikes me as perplexing. For years, I was sure these people were allergic to even the faintest trace of human decency. They’ve watched as thousands of children have been torn asunder by US ordinance and they—often at the prompting of Kirk—cheered on the slaughter. They’ve proven me wrong in recent hours, I’ve been shocked to find that they do have the ability to be upset by murder.
