We are being price gouged by supermarket duopoly but no one in NZ politics has the balls to regulate basic capitalism

The grocery gap: This is how much more Kiwis pay for food

Feeding a family of four in New Zealand now costs about $25,000 a year: an eye-watering bill that’s $10,000 higher than that paid by the average Australian household, and $8000 higher than a British one.

Last week, Stuff reported that, give or take, a household needed to earn $125,000 to live comfortably.

A chunk of that is devoted to feeding ourselves, with Inland Revenue’s household expenditure guide reporting that groceries for a family of four averaged an annual $25,000.

It’s a big part of the household budget, and more than families are spending in other countries with similar economies.

We need to break the supermarket duopoly, that is what the commerce Commission has been advising ever since it started looking at the problem, Labour were too spineless to do anything when they were in power and now Nicola Willis has proven herself too gutless as well…

‘Express lane’ reforms to increase supermarket competition – Willis

The Government is launching a sweeping set of reforms aimed at boosting competition and making it easier for businesses to open and expand in New Zealand’s grocery sector.

…she announces a huge cost of living crisis announcement on Supermarkets that turns out to be nothing more than reducing the building of new supermarkets from 18months to 12months!

THAT ONLY HELPS THE CURRENT DUOPOLY BUILD MORE SUPERMARKETS!

IT WON’T DO A FUCKING THING ABOUT BREAKING THE DUOPOLY – IT WILL EMPOWER THEM!

ACT are crowing she made the right decision by not breaking up the Duopoly which is as damning an indictment that you can get.

We need a third player backed by the Government and Iwi!

The cost of living crisis is destroying Kiwis.

Voters need hope that their basic costs will come down.

Covid taught us food security matters and a Supermarket chain that embeds a cheaper food security while supporting local supplies is a necessity to correct a broken market!

Government should enter into a deal with Iwi to stock a new chain of Government/Iwi Supermarkets that champion local produce at better prices for the consumer and better worker conditions.

We need a kiwi subsidy on all local produce to recognize that producers have already used water and created local climate changing gases to create their product and as such consumers have already paid a price just to get the product to their table.

The numbers are right in front of you Kiwis, you are being price gouged by the duopoly and no one seems to have the balls to stand up to them!

  1. No independent thought allowed in NZ, Tom Phillips wanted to be independent and while I did not support his actions I was not surprised that the police shot him dead rather than risk any future Women’s Weekly stories about how he survived years on the run.

  2. The power companies are even worse as there is more of them and more providers is supposed to drive down prices, but it hasn’t so much for the free market.

  3. Before Two Degrees could enter the market and take on the Voda Telcom duopoly they had to wait for a government that prohibited pocket pricing in the communications sector. Labour sorted that.

Can the next Labour govt make the necessary regulation to mitigate the risk for local and overseas new entrants?
