Hoots, doesn’t hold back…

Christopher Luxon faces leadership crisis as National MPs lose confidence – Matthew Hooton

  • Christopher Luxon’s popularity in the preferred Prime Minister stakes dropped to the lowest point in two years in the latest 1 News-Verian poll
  • Luxon was on 20%, down 3% and only a point ahead of Labour leader Chris Hipkins
  • The poll also had National on 34%, only a point ahead of Labour on 33%

The Prime Minister’s pathetic attempts to associate himself with Taylor Swift, interfere in monetary policy and boast about a four-year-old Amazon deal should be the last straws.

Any reprieve is over. Within weeks, Christopher Luxon faces the likelihood of a delegation representing a strong majority of National MPs advising that he has lost their confidence.

Luxon could put his leadership to a secret confidence vote this Tuesday. But it’s not certain he could rely on a single vote except, pro forma, from deputy leader Nicola Willis.

His senior colleagues aren’t disposed to be unkind. While none ever warmed to him, they allow some credence for the tale that Luxon united National after four years of fratricide.

Then again, bloodletting always runs its course as MPs become exhausted. Events wouldn’t have unfolded much differently had Simon Bridges regained National’s leadership after Judith Collins’ fall, except for greater policy creativity

…it’s important to remember Luxon wasn’t elected because he was the best candidate, it was a compromise result after Judith Collins attempted to kill Simon Bridges with a ‘Me Too’ character assassination after her disastrous run as Leader finally ended.

In her desperation to cling onto power, Judith smeared Simon Bridges who was lining up a challenge and spite fucked him by throwing all her supporters votes into Luxon’s camp making him the leader.

That’s hardly made for a charismatic leadership.

Luxon’s weird evangelical prosperity theology religion, his wealth flaunting, his CEO key point delivery, the man has all the charm of a road accident.

Hoots suggests Luxon will be offered a quite room to commit political suicide in for his own sake of decency…

Most likely, Luxon will be offered the option of staging his own departure and explanation. “Christopher,” the delegation will say, “there’s still time for a managed exit”. Luxon having no caucus support makes such generosity possible since there’s no risk he could pull a Houdini.

If Luxon doesn’t face reality, his removal will be messier. Yet, contrary to popular belief, parties’ polling usually improves immediately after even messy leadership changes.

…the decisions to slash the economy, which Hooton wants, has resulted in the very economic calamity that Hooton is now signalling as the decider on Luxon’s fate which is hilarious because if it was up to Hooton the slash and burn would be ten times greater.

National are fucked. This is THEIR economic agenda.

THEY have decided to borrow billions for tax cuts and landlord loopholes and $300m for Tobacco and deregulation of their donors interests – THEY are the ones creating the bitter harvest we are experiencing now!

David Seymour and Winston are manipulating culture war polarisation thanks to the social media hate algorithms and National are bleeding out.

Luxon’s weakness is the reason Seymour and Winston are staying inside the Government, if anyone inside National attempted a coup against Luxon, Winston and Seymour could use that as a reason to end the Government early.

Anyone seeking to replace Luxon might immediately start a snap election.

National don’t have the balls for that.

  1. The Labour Party should have Bob Dylan’s ‘It’s All Over Now Baby Blue’ as their theme tune for the election..

Has their ever been a more incompetent hapless, useless, hopeless, shapeless government than this one …excluding the Ruth Richardson – Jenny Shipley years…

    I think not!

    • It’s All Over Now Baby Blue – Song by Bob Dylan

You must leave now, take what you need you think will last
But ever you wish to keep, you better grab it fast
Yonder stands your orphan with a gun
Crying like a fire in the sun
Look out, the saints are coming through
And it’s all over now Baby Blue

The highway is for gamblers, better use your sense
Take what you have gathered from coincidence
The empty-handed painter from your streets
Is drawing crazy patterns on your sheets
The sky too is folding under you
And it’s all over now Baby Blue

All your sea-sick sailors, they’re all rowing home
Your empty-handed army is all going home
Your lover who just walked out the door
Has taken all his blankets from the floor
The carpet too is moving under you
And it’s all over now Baby Blue

      Leave your steppingstones behind there
      Something calls for you
Forget the dead you’ve left, they will not follow you
The vagabond who’s rapping at your door
Is standing in the clothes that you once wore
Strike another match, go start anew
And it’s all over now, Baby Blue

  2. Does Hootan have any evidence or inside information to support his theory that Luxon is going to be rolled, or is he just shit stirring for the hell of it.

  3. It all makes work for the working journalist to do. Politics is a sort of sports news, how’s our team doing, are they passing the ball well and cleverly? Some Kiwi wits with music genes should make up a similar ditty to Spike Jones reporting a horse race and backing -Beetlebaum.

  4. Hooton the Milei fanboy wants a government that does austerity as brutally as possible – not the redistributive crony capitalism* of Luxon. He is toxic to the body politic and toxic to the possibility of civilised human life – never trust anything he says.

    * “redistributive crony capitalism” = the Luxon govt shifts wealth from average citizens to NACT’s donors and supporters, not to some broader capitalist ‘class’.
