Amazon’s $7.5b NZ data centre plan questioned over job, GDP claims

Amazon’s big announcement with the backing of the PM has grabbed headlines, but additional details are casting doubt on claims of a boost to jobs and GDP.

The major political parties are clashing over whether anyone can take credit for what’s been billed as the biggest publicly announced investment by an international tech firm in New Zealand’s history – so big the Tuesday announcement seemed in many ways to be the same as one from 2021.

Questions being raised are as fundamental as whether the data centres promised back then are even real.

…there aren’t any new buildings, there aren’t any 1000 new jobs and the supposed $7.5b investment is now over 15 years.

Add to this the report that Big Tech are paying crumbs in tax…

Tax Justice Aotearoa & Better Taxes for a Better Future published a new reportthis morning titled: Big Tech, Little Tax, which estimated Facebook, Google and Amazonearned $1.6981 billion in revenue in Aotearoa last year, but reported taxable income here of just $27 million because of the use of ‘service fees’ charged to the local subsidiary by their parents in the United States.

…and remember all the promises about the Blackrock investment into NZ to make us 100% Net Zero?

Omission from Green Investment Bank (NZGIF)

    • The New Zealand Green Investment Finance (NZGIF) was a government-backed green investment bank created in 2019.

    • In late 2024, controversy erupted over its NZ$145 million loan to SolarZero, which collapsed after being acquired by BlackRock.

…NZ keeps getting played by these big tech firms and private investment vultures with an endless stream of promises tomorrow that today never brings!

  1. We must all by now know Luxon is a vain, clueless bag of wind who regularly puts his foot (feet) in his mouth. He jumps the gun, tells porkies, is evasive and is so easily led, especially if he thinks there’s something in it for him! So embarrassing and the only reason he is still PM is THERE IS NO ONE ELSE ANY BETTER!! Sadly he doesn’t have one original or intelligent idea in his head, hence his grasping of anything like the Amazon bait that might just do! The CoC MPs are a bunch of crooks all cut from the same faulty mold. Again, Key, do tell us how Luxon got to be PM? And yes, serial vulture, Peter Theil, needs to be kicked out of NZ and all the other bludgers taxed to the limit or made to leave. Time for a complete reset.

China has a communist system where corporation don’t fleece their government for favors where their population doesn’t suffer severe homelessness like NZ and other western country practicing democracy and their banks are own by the Chinese state and their shareholders are the Chinese people. Crime is very rare if any, and also racism is not a feature of the Chinese mental characteristic, yet we suppose to believe the narrative that China is bad, and the west is good??? Wake up sheeples!!

    • Gotta keep that line of propaganda going, fingers up at the Russians for years, now China, all part of the pretence to be fed to gullible citizens in NZAO. The wealthy want to believe it, or are happy to pretend because the system suits them. I was interested in Dr Sutch’s treatment. It occurred to me he was a clued up academic and civil servant who didn’t pretend enough, wanted to find what the firm ground was under the shifting wraiths of ghostly and ghastly government policy.

      • Seems so long ago but I remember the Sutch entrapment well. The same malign deep state organs that remain unchanged in their nastiness.
        Sutchs book Quest for Security we read at Uni, still relevant. One of our lecturers Keith Ovenden wrote a good memoir Bill and Shirley showing them as good people much maligned.
