Rotorua kuia’s image used in Hobson’s Pledge billboard without consent, family outraged

The family of a Rotorua kuia whose image was used on a Hobson’s Pledge billboard without her permission say the political lobby group has trampled on her mana.

Ellen Tamati’s photograph showing her moko kauae appeared on the Hobson Pledge’s billboards with the words: “My mana doesn’t need a mandate, vote no to Māori wards”.

The widow’s family said their nan “fundamentally disagrees” with the billboard’s message and Hobson’s Pledge never asked her permission.

Hobson’s Pledge removed the billboards after complaints.

Spokesman Don Brash said the group was sorry Tamati was upset and had reached out, but insisted it had broken no rules.

Hobson’s Pledge is a redneck, cross burning, political circus freak cavalcade of arseholes you wouldn’t piss on if they were one fire.

Their entire shtick is a bullshit historical mythology that Hobson, by uttering some lines about ‘being one people’, meant that Māori did sign away their sovereignty and the Treaty is effectively meaningless.

It’s such a bullshit claim wrapped in a special coating of stupid.

It’s one step away from claiming Stonehenge aged white people colonised NZ before Māori.

Their use of a Māori woman to front their racist Billboards however is actually more insidious than offensive.

Yes, of course using a Māori woman’s face to be the Billboard before getting extra permission for a campaign this racist is offensive, but the Billboard insinuates by the use of these Māori that they are actually making the stance as individuals which attempts to add a horrific legitimacy to the campaign!

Hobson’s Pledge can’t get any actual Māori willing to make that stance which is why they’ve had to pay to mimic that.

Hobson’s Pledge are trying to trick other Māori into rejecting local council representation while allowing white racists to feel less racist because the Billboard is fronted by a Māori!

As far as I am concerned, Hobson’s Pledge are up there with Destiny Church in terms of crypto-fascists who we should universally hold in contempt.

  1. And what does that licencing agreement state?

“section 3b of the iStock Content License Agreement, content listed as “editorial use only” cannot be used for any commercial, promotional, advertorial, endorsement, advertising, gambling/betting/gaming uses or merchandising purpose.”

    https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/569189/rotorua-kuia-caught-up-in-hobson-s-pledge-s-anti-maori-ward-campaign

I’ve worked with image licencing, those racist cunts have breached the terms of the license…

And these are the pricks who think they know how the law works.

And also believe that a signed contract can be made null and void by the retrospective analysis of the thoughts of one of the signatories. If the other party are brown coloured.

Quite the own goal from the fucking clown show of “great legal minds” behind Hobson’s Pledge.

I hope the Kuia and Istock both sue H.P. into the ground for bringing them into disrepute.

  2. And I suppose it was a scientific 50% chance that Brash took this insensitive action against a woman.

  3. The spiteful racism in NZ is becoming worse by the day. If you don’t like our indigenous people, go and live somewhere else – we sure as hell won’t miss you! Martyn why isn’t Ellen Tamati suing the sickos at Hobson’s Pledge? I sure would be. The arrogance, the ignorance and the outright lies are bad enough, but using someone’s image, saying something they wouldn’t say, is appalling. Chris Finlayson is also trying his hardest to stop the racism rot with his articles in Stuff and tells our pathetic PM “to pull the bill and stop hurting Maori” and “to stop hurting Maori with marine law changes”. What will it take for New Zealanders to get behind our indigenous people to protect and support them. I’m truly disgusted with the smug attitudes of the nasty folk in this lovely country. Maori were here before the settlers – it’s nothing short of bullying. I was born here from settler stock! I respect our Maori and their rights.

    • Obviously, she is too poor to sue anyone let alone HP who has some very wealthy members maybe her family can set-up a “Go FundMe page”? for legal representation

  4. MORE ON THIS…..Impossible to believe that a ‘cliche’ has formed on “hearsay”! Could they not have formed a group to support the underprivileged, disabled, the needy? NO, DON’T BE STUPID! Imagine what the Hobsons Pledge gatherings are like – a hatefest of dribbling, frothing at the mouth, ‘pretendy humans’ so outraged that the country their ancestors STOLE still contains “OMG Indigenous People” with rights! What a shocking waste of time and money this cliche is. Winnie’s fingerprints are all over this.
