Just when you didn’t think the school lunches fiasco could get any worse, the School Lunch Collective has started using a 25% cheaper offal mince blend for school lunches, without telling anyone.
Lung and liver tacos with special brain meat might be cheaper but I’m not sure the kids are going to enjoy the flavour.
How did we manage to take healthy, nutritious school lunches designed by Labour and end up with ofal burgers smothered in ground up heart gravy?
What will David Seymour serve our kids up next?

Sure, offal mince might be cheaper and a couple of grades up from what you’d feed your pet, but if David Seymour got his way, he’d give hungry kids semi-automatic rifles and a packet of pseudoephedrine before he’d actually feed them – just to teach their parents a lesson about not having kids they can’t afford.
Seymour running the school lunches is a little bit like Darth Vader opening a kindergarten.
Talking of Offal Mince, David Seymour is now threatning to use the Fast Track Powers to create a new branch of Supermarkets to which I say, Oi! You! No!
We’ve all just seen what he’s done to the kids school lunches, do you really want him anywhere near supermarkets?
We are already price gouged by Countdown and New World and Slack n Slave, I don’t want Jellymeat casserole specials or Fish Fingers made out of real fish fingers.
If ACT had their way they would allow Supermarkets to harvest human organs and sell your pets for soup.

While I think the budget for the meals is too small I see nothing wrong in using ofal . Western people waste so much of the animals we eat.Cooked properly all of the animal or seafood can be used . When I arrived. In NZ in the 73 lamb shanks were sold as dog food now they are an expensive dining experience.
For your tired old tastebuds offal might be ok. For children, it’s awful. Their sense of taste is too sensitive.
Can’t remember lamb shanks being sold as dog food. They were part of a leg or shank end which were both for roasting for roasting. Don’t remember them being separated.
At this stage you’d have to be somewhat naive to be surprised at this latest profit making, cost cutting, neoliberal brainfart from ACT/Compass.

This has been a dogs breakfast from go to whoa. Seymour saved a bit of money by offering slops and the children suffered. Nothing new from a capitalist party who favour the very wealthy donors that put them there.
Unclear that this is solely to save money, this may also just be part of discouraging kids from eating the meals to justify the cancellation of the program, which has been the general goal. The only exception that I’ve heard of for this is schools being pressured to provide alternative kosher meals for jewish students (you will be unsurprised to hear that no such accommodation has been made for Muslims).
Yeah I agree this is their ultimate aim to shut the program down, which they have already said they don’t believe in. Didn’t Luxon say parents should be able to supply a marmite white bread sammy and an apple? Like his did when he was growing up??
Woke offal. What next?
The funny thing is that had this happened during a left government the fash would be calling offal woke without a shred of irony, and the commenters here would be praising the virtues of how nose to tail butchery reduces food waste and carbon emissions.
Having eaten offal all my life, as far as I’m concerned most of the comments being grossed out at offal is just middle class squeamishness. Just try a steak and kidney pie, or barbecued chicken hearts with chimichurri, or a lengua taco for once in your life. If you’re still not convinced, go listen to a Michelin-starred chef go nuts about how much they love sweetbreads and lungs. You’ll soon realise that offal isn’t scary.
Wasting offal shows disrespect to the animal we slaughtered, and seeing comments denigrating offal on a leftist blog honestly makes me sad. Sure there are arguments to be made about how ACT are trying to destroy the program, but there’s no need to take it out on offal.
