The head of Trans-Tasman Resources who just won a contract to mine off the South Taranaki seabed using the rigged fast track process, (a project that had been denied previously many times by the environment court), has told a local meeting that Iwi must engage with them whether Iwi want them or not…
Iwi must deal with us ‘whether they want us or not’ – seabed miners
The head of a company that wants to mine millions of tonnes of ironsands from the seabed off the Taranaki coast says local iwi – which unanimously oppose the project – must engage with Trans-Tasman Resources “whether they want us or not”, if it gets its consents.
…y-e-a-h. Telling Iwi they must engage with you. That’s going to work.
At what point do these corporations start threatening Iwi legally that if they don’t engage to tick their engagement box will lead to legal action and costs?
Māori have cultural memory of the first wave of white settler capitalist exploitation resource taking, they have the flax roots knowledge of what sustainability and environmental protection looks like, it is no wonder that international right wing think tanks always aim to attack indigenous rights first to enable the next generation of exploitative resource stripping.
Indigenous people are the frontline against environmental degradation, watching Corporations begin to start tell Māori they have to engage with them to justify that ecological damage is nothing short of a threat.
Increasingly having independent opinion in a mainstream media environment which mostly echo one another has become more important than ever, so if you value having an independent voice – please donate here.

Corporations have been designed over the centuries to have all the legal rights of people and none of the responsibilities. They are the scourge of modern society and the best solution would be to ban them and haul out the faceless executives and owners of said companies into the sunshine and start making them accountable to humanity and responsible for their decisions.
Spoken like a seer rangi – good if it could be done without bloodshed but we have to face that factor.
While I want corporations to be more accountable they should be better than having 1 person owning substantial parts of the economy, you need to expand your vision and accept that our current system is completely broken and incapable of getting better which is why I believe in a new creation.
Do you think you could be a little more specific?
Here’s how it goes when companies are able to expand in every direction. Less competition and more domination of markets and virtual monopoly control.
eg …products encompass a diverse range, including processing machinery for various industries, paints and coatings, espresso machines, and even butter. ….also provides equipment for the quarry, mining, landfill, and waste management sectors, along with paint and coating solutions and specialty products like unsalted butter.
All the way with a great big say, is their not-so-silent meme.
