Nothing sums up the weakness of Luxon quite like this photo, …he’s a bald man wearing a hairnet. That is actually what he represents politically as a leader.

The Post-Freshwater Strategy Poll: Labour pulls ahead of National

Labour has pulled ahead of National in the latest The Post/Freshwater Strategy poll, as nearly half of New Zealanders say the country is heading in the wrong direction and cost-of-living concerns continue to dominate public sentiment.

The Labour Party has gained seven points since the 2023 election to reach 34%, overtaking National on 32%, down six points. The Greens are on 11%, with ACT and NZ First each polling at 8%.

Chippy is preferred over Cluxon…

…people don’t believe the budget will help them…

…a majority believe we are going in the wrong direction…

…the real danger for National is that their economic decisions cause more damage not growth and the voters will turn on them as Winter gets harsher.

NZF are benefiting from their culture war stirring because NZF voters want a book burning where as ACT want to simply not pay for the library.

Increasingly having independent opinion in a mainstream media environment which mostly echo one another has become more important than ever, so if you value having an independent voice – please donate here.

  1. The Right are still well ahead Any votes National loses are going to NZF or Act so nothing to worry about .

    • Actually this poll shows a net loss of 5% in support for the Governing parties and a 5% increase in likely left Governing parties (Labour, Greens, TPM). If you’re being cheeky and swap TPM for NZF in the left bloc, their support is up 8%.

National is being held down by a deeply unpopular Act party. They need to kick Act to the kerb and stop letting Seymour run the show.

    • What you and many others including the pollsters fail to remember TPM have 6 elected mps which gives them a massive sway compared to NZF which are really just free loaders .In this case have you and others allowed for those 6 seats in your count up .?

    • Indeed but who is there. Ayesha Verrall – very very good on health. I don’t see any of them as potential leaders.

      • best you start opening your eyes there are some good people there ,the difference is they are not blowhard legends in their own lunch time .The difference is they are not bleating on the news every night that Maori are stealing the country and other lies and destroying other peoples live with petty bull shit hate .

  2. You can see the righty tighties are getting more worried and confused every day. National are bleeding votes, slowly but surely. Labour are gaining votes, slowly but surely.

  3. There is nothing wrong with Chippy, but he will need to up his game and he is going to have to make some tough calls on policy. He will also need to reverse some of the CoC policies perhaps he can do it fast track like they did. If he has some good well thought out policies, I will be giving two ticks as I did at the last election.
Our country has been divided by the CoC and we have two minor parties looking mainly after their voters at the expense of many but more so the poor, working class and our environment and this cannot continue. The rich will come out with their money to help the CoC get back in power, so we need to encourage more people to vote.

  4. The reality is that Labour is only as good as its coalition partners – indeed that’s Nationals current reality. Voters want a dollar each way and that doesnt work out well for the two big parties on polling day.

  5. None of the parties currently in contention are economically credible. Absent the culture wars, Labour might have a prayer. Best option is Australia – Neoliberalism lite instead of heavy.

  6. Meh…once the NZ voters realise a vote for National is a vote for the ACTparty.
National will NEVER win any election.
The ACT party with it’s headline grabbing racist rhetoric may make it’s core voters happy, but not any voter outside ATLAS
If National say NO to an ACT party coalition, they can’t win governance. (They will need the 5 extra NZ First party seats to form a govt)
If National say YES to an ACT party coalition, they can’t win governance. (They will lose more votes and seats than the 5 additional ACT seats they gain)
    LOSE/LOSE

I wouldn’t be surprised if Xi cancelled his meeting with Luxon over this.

New Zealand halts Cook Islands funding in stoush over China

Jo Moir, RNZ Political Editor, today 19 June, 2025

New Zealand has paused nearly $20m of core sector support funding for the Cook Islands, after its government signed partnership agreements with China earlier this year without consulting New Zealand.
The Foreign Affairs minister informed the Cook Islands government of the decision in early June.
However, it only became public on Thursday (19 June) after media reports in the Cook Islands.

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon is currently in China on his first official visit, and is due to meet with President Xi Jinping shortly.
