Four-year parliamentary term legislation to be introduced, would go to referendum
The coalition will introduce legislation on a four-year Parliamentary term, subject to a referendum, with all three parties supporting it to a select committee.
The legislation will have a caveat, designed by the ACT Party as part of its coalition deal, that the term would only extend to four years if there were greater checks and balances on the government of the day.
It would mean unless the make-up of select committees was made proportionate to the number of non-Executive members of Parliament (any MP that is not a minister, associate minister, or under-secretary), the term would remain at three years.
Each time a new government was elected it would decide whether to keep a 3-year term or have a 4-year term with the select committee changes.
Why would you want this hard right Government with its anti-Māori, anti-Treaty, anti-worker, anti-renter, anti-beneficiary, anti-disabled, anti-environment agenda that strangles the common good for their donors interests an extra year in power?
NZ has one of the most powerful Parliaments in the Western World – no where else can you just read d law into power, so NZ has the most powerful Parliament in the Western World, and National want to add a year that power with bullshit overview?
Why would you muppets get tricked into this?
How masochistic is NZ as a people to agree to this?
Allowing a new Government to decide every election whether they want a 3 year term or 4 term is insane, you can’t be this stupid?
Increasingly having independent opinion in a mainstream media environment which mostly echo one another has become more important than ever, so if you value having an independent voice – please donate here.

Elections are a way for the citizenry to change the government without having to go to the bother of having a revolution. Elections are good things and are to be encouraged.
The good thing about being a voting citizen is that you don’t have to be wise, or smart, or knowledgeable, or rational, or logical. You don’t even have to be motivated to get off your arse on a certain day and go stand in line in some old school hall.
You can vote for whoever you want and base that vote on whatever criteria you want. You can study party policies or just do what Facebook tells you. You can love Jacinda and give her all the keys to the House and then you can hate her so much she runs away and a bunch of fuck- knuckles take over.
Lets keep 3 years to remind all politicians who their bosses are.
3 years is fine thanks very much, we have had terrible governments from left and right, more accountability needed not less.
Imaging if Labour had had another year to ruin the country even more than it did .We would have had even more overpaid underperformed pubiic servants a overpriced ferry service and more transport dead lock as we further reduced speed limits .
You will regret mentioning overpriced ferry’s.
Labour went from a deal costing 775m to 3 billion only a free spending party would have carried on that track
You are stupid Trevor, you really are.
Four years is a long time. The people running a government at the end of that term and their policies could easily be very different from what was promised in the 3 months leading up to the prior election.
Once a government is voted in they are pretty much free to do whatever they want, including a complete change in leadership, totally at odds with what they were elected to do, promises forgotten, targets not met.
If the term is extended to four years, that should go hand in hand with enabling annual recall elections so that MPs are always accountable to the electorate.
Having 3 year terms is why Politicians lean so heavily on “expert” advice that they just ignore anyway in favour of bashing there prefered punching bag. 4 year terms is an idea who’s time has come.

If national and the other two idiot parties get in again, we won’t be just open for business, we will be for sale.
‘Having a Left Wing government made up of the incompetent Labour, TPM, Greens for 3 years is terrifying ‘
Just stock up on clean undies and learn to live with it Bob.

Politicians are like nappies, they should be changed often. and for the same reason.
Short, sharp and sardonic in a nutshell.
This government is not even half way through its term and already it seems like decades of my life have been wasted. Four years would be interminable and intolerable.
Why can’t we have an electronic voting system like the Cantons in Switzerland where we vote every three years for a new government, vote on major issues every month, and can issue a vote of no confidence in the government at any stage which can be upheld if a certain threshold is met.
Barring that, what about administering an electrical shock if enough people push the button for any MP over a rolling 24 hour period.
Why make politicians accountable every three years when we could hold them to account every day.
Is there a prize for the best entry for why we should let Gnacts ruin us? Anyone who won that would do this on a falsity – we are already wrecked. From now on it is just a matter of proppring up, repairing and banishing the miscreants to whatever nirvana they have been expecting or to their own comfortably fitted hell hole of corruption.
I’ve been reading Anne Perry – after a youthful crime who became a thoughtful and wise person and also a good writer. It would be good for many men to read her Victorian crime solving stories – they go deep into the underbelly of the era. Stir your imagination if you have any and not just concentrate on technical matters of life.
I have been listening to an old tape of organ music. Could any animals that could devise music that might arise from the deeps of the earth in a volcano, and a grand instrument to play it on be completely stupid and bad? No! So let’s live up to our potential and find better ways – we haven’t centuries in front of us to flit around indulging ourselves.
Bach – this one is beautifully gothically illustrated. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXPZGHk0PLA

This one shows Jean-Baptiste Dupont playing a humungous organ in Toulouse. What an amazing thing.

Let’s make it that everyone has to study music and learn to play something while still in primary. Then a year on philosophy, history and discussion about it and why we keep going to war and trying to rob nations of their assets to suit ourselves, and then ultimately live out our own lives in similar fashion if not restrained by better judgment from wise people in our own milieu.
And then study why we don’t learn more words than want, take, bottom feeders, millionaires, smart sportsmen and others who are lionized and then start to bite more vulnerable people etc. And how to learn from analogy such as the one called The Emperor’s New Clothes by Hans Christian Andersen (fairy tale?) or the many Hollywood and other films?
Three years or even two years. Certainly not four years. Chippy thinks four years is a good idea. Wow that guy is Luxon with a Chippy face. He has gotta be rolled.
