RMA overhaul: Government seeks common ground with opposition
The coalition government is reaching across the aisle to identify any common ground with its political opponents on its overhaul of the Resource Management Act (RMA).
But it is a ‘take it or leave it’ approach, with the government not looking to make any major changes if opposition parties disagree with parts of the scheme.
The RMA – which governs how people interact with natural resources – has long been criticised as a hindrance, not a help, to getting things done.
It led to the former Labour government repealing and replacing the laws just before Election 2023 – changes that were rolled back when the coalition came into power.
Here comes the bipartisan game that Chippy told the Auckland Chamber of Commerce he would slavishly adhere to. At the Investment Summit Labour promised to allow National to do anything they want and we’ll put up with it.
It was an embarrassing display of acquiesce that would make Chuck Schumer blush!
Chuck Schumer’s decision to free Trump from the noose he’d put around his own neck by voting to stop Government shut down highlights the feckless meaninglessness of Left wing politics globally.
Too focused on pronouns and too liberal towards vampire capitalism.
Trump is a fascist, his dangerous brinkmanship and description of all that is Polityiocaly Holy demands a level of resistance that demands you shut down the Government, not politely roll over and accomodate.
Look at these stats for young people…

…no wonder the Left have lost the trust of young people when our response is to acquiesce to fascism.
The NZ Labour Party rose being seen as weak and meaningless as the Democrats.
By promising to be bipartisan and not rip down what has been built would be a reasonable position for Chippy to take if this wasn’t such a venally repellant hard right government riven by corporate interests and donor pet projects!
National just burnt everything Labour did and then have the fucking audacity to ask for more collective decision making while using our ‘stability’ as a sales pitch to foreign investment when ironically its their race stunts that is risking that ‘stability’.
Chippy has to be NZs emotional support Labrador after all the shit this hard right Government have thrown at people, but if his bark is as weak as his bite those young peoples aspirations will falter even further with more incremental Labour policy that never fixes the problems we face.
There’s hope for Chippy thanks to this Government’s venal racism…
Māori Development Minister unaware government ruled out Treaty clause in RMA reform
Māori Development Minister Tama Potaka says he’s “looked over” his “notes” since reporters asked what he thought about the removal of the Treaty clause in RMA reforms, but he didn’t want to get into “semantic gymnastics.”
The clause required the principles of the Treaty to be upheld, as is included in the current RMA.
RMA Minister Chris Bishop confirmed on Monday Cabinet had agreed not to include the clause in the coalition’s proposed new legislation.
Earlier on Tuesday, Potaka told reporters it was the first he’d heard about it when asked.
…they didn’t even bother explaining to poor old Tama that they had thrown him under the bus.
Jesus wept.
Thankfully the Māori Caucus will give Chippy the backbone Labour lacks because there’s no way Labour can agree to any RMA that doesn’t include the Treaty!
Not even a sausage roll can help swallow that dead rat.
National only want bipartisanship when it is helping generate consensus to screw Kiwis over.
Their view of the RMA is driven by an extreme libertarian property rights fetishisation that allows individuals to dow whatever they like on their own property regardless of the impact on the rest of the community.
It is a rich mans law written for those who wish to exploit under the guise of property rights.
Your property rights don’t trump our human rights.
This is a wet dream for corporations and the wealthy who wish to develop regardless of the environmental ramifications or cultural considerations.
Time for Labour to step up for the human rights of people over the property rights of the rich.
Increasingly having independent opinion in a mainstream media environment which mostly echo one another has become more important than ever, so if you value having an independent voice – please donate here.

if Kieran McAnulty was Labour leader he could get away with…“look, build a deck if you want to boys, don’t bother putting triple glazing in the Far North, but…no dropping native trees or further polluting waterways”.
Chippy rolling over after all this vandal Govt. has done to the NZ working class is just not on.
Chippy is too soft. Get some mongrel in there. Chloe has more chutzpah than any of them. Swarbrick and McAnulty FTW
Of course they will leave that out thats the only real change they will make .The rest is just a take off of the hard yards David Parker did before the election .The elephant in the room is the mining of National parks ,which are really Maori land that was confiscated back in the 1800s and which the government failed to sell to pakeha or could not give away for free.Take the treaty out and its open slather for Dr Pork Jones and the Aussie miners who sponsor him .
Scared. Chippy inspires no confidence whatsoever that he won’t whine and roll over. Would be interested to read in any response to Schumers reasoning for rolling to Trump to keep govt open. Pelosy saying she wouldn’t give something for nothing isn’t addressing his reason for doing what he did.
