When you consider the magnitude of Luxon’s spinelessness in the face of NZF pumping up a culture war, you really do have to wonder what the National Party stands for any longer…
Toothless Luxon’s about-face on diversity
A lot can happen in six years. For our Prime Minister it looks like a 180 on his views about diversity and inclusion.
In June 2019, he was widely quoted in international aviation literature and local rags calling for airlines to set diversity targets “with some real teeth” as he collected an international diversity and inclusion award on behalf of Air New Zealand.
In his speech he said: “When you look at the research, companies that have a top quartile ethnic diversity leadership group have about a 33 percent more likely chance of delivering higher than average market share. When you look at top quartile gender companies, they deliver up to 38 percent more than the average market share. Whilst it is the right thing to do, it is actually a really compelling business case.”
Those “targets with some real teeth” he was advocating for were “about overcoming the unconscious bias that sits in our recruitment and our advancement of women through our organisations”.
Yet last week he expressed interest in New Zealand First’s bill that would end requirements for diversity and inclusion measures in the public service.
What perplexes me is that, given he seems to have an excellent grasp of the empirical evidence that says diverse teams deliver more, why he wouldn’t want that for the public service tasked to deliver the Government’s priorities.
…Luxon simply has no strategy on how to deal with David or Winston.
He knows diversity works, he knows the studies and academic research proving this and he knows putting it into policy helps break down barriers of class and allows for actual agency of citizens which is what the bloody state is supposed to do!
If meritocracy is dominated by bigotry and chauvinism, then it isn’t fucking meritocracy is it?
Merit-based appointments should mean that candidates are objectively assessed against stated measures. But objectivity is difficult; we all come with biases. Take research on auditions for orchestras, which were traditionally dominated by men. Women began to be selected only once auditions were done behind screens. Recruiters could only make their judgments on the quality of the music.
Shockingly, research also shows that women’s academic papers get accepted at a higher rate than men if they are reviewed blind.
So Luxon knows diversity and the promotion of diversity is actually a positive thing for a liberal progressive capitalist democracy, yet as soon as Winston hypocritically hops on his latest attempt to stay over 5% and starts blasting diversity (diversity his own Party’s constitution promotes by the way…

…which makes his stance now insanely hypocritical), the millisecond Winston starts his MAGA inspired culture war bullshit, Luxon shuts up and lets him do it.
It’s this kind of spineless and insipid leadership that Kiwis detest.
Increasingly having independent opinion in a mainstream media environment which mostly echo one another has become more important than ever, so if you value having an independent voice – please donate here.

Mr Luxury Luxon really is as you see him…a corporate bum boy who got as far as he could, and that was not too far in terms of world capitalist enterprise. He has little political skill and resorts to wit, or more accurately, petty insults–“bottom feeders”, “Marmite sandwich” is the best he can do.
A self respecting confident person would slap some bronzer on his shiny white bonce, grow some stubble, designer shades, and look like a man. But he is “entitled” and “sorted” so it is ok to look like a bungler. He does not have the nous or ability to tell Seymour and Winston to pull their heads in, so we all have to cop it in the meantime.
Luxon and his Party have bigger problems to deal with sorting out the financial mess NZ was in after 6 years of Labour rule than fighting with Winston
It is a worse mess since they took over from the strong previous Labour government and it’s outstanding finance minister. Sadly the Coc has a finance minister that is way out of her depth and it’s taken them less than 2 years. Her strength is having babies.
No surprises the Coalition is tanking votes and is a one term government such is their appalling handling of the countries economy. Nothing to do with Labour, just a severe lack of talent in the CoC’s department. When you need a hospital admission Trevor and the lights go out, maybe then and only then will you get it through your naive skull that cutting and axing is not the way to go.
I can only speak about Christchurch and I know the health system can never lives up to expectations no. matter who is in charge but from Dr picking up a possible health problem to getting a test to source the problem and 4 days in hospital to prepare for operation it all flowed very smoothly without delays. No it was not private .Our health system attracts people from all over the World so it cannot be that bad.
well not so long ago Christchurch had the best health setup in NZ till Levy got his hands on it and slashed it to death ,then Luxon let him loose on the rest of the country so he could slash that to death as well .
That was then, we are talking now and it’s in a horrendous state, ask any health professional what they think under this CoC?

Now where did that tax cut go again? Be a good boy Trev and play dead again.
Shows Labour borrow and hope policy did not work
Trevor, is COC policy of corporate and investor tax breaks coupled with bottom feeder bashing making our country great again. I don’t think so because it is basically a rerun of the Ruth Richardson Jim Bolger experiment. Margaret Thatcher tried to same thing in UK followed by Truss etc and look where that lead.
It was working brilliantly but National have fucked up( yet again) but that’s beyond the mental capacity of many who comment here, they’re consumed by envy of the left.
How much was borrowed for tax cuts that weren’t needed and now they are asking for it back and some. That’s a really fucked up finance minister right there.
You must speculate to accumulate Trevor.
Cutting and axing has never been a recipe to a better economy, neoliberalism is a failure.
I read an article last week (sorry, can’t find it again for reference) which pointed out that during the era of the highest taxation periods in NZ history (50s-60s) home ownership and personal savings were at an all-time high, commodities were cheaper than now comparatively speaking, and inflation was very low as were interest rates.
Lower taxes strain the economy more than those who benefit most from them would have us believe.
What were the comparisons though? Top income bracket v lowest income bracket. If higher taxes from the highest incomes, your comment from the article has merit otherwise what were the parameters, say local and cheap v local and expensive now, why?
Plus the population was much lower and those able to pay higher taxes will have you believe the country will go broke if we have them pay a higher tax threshold.
Luxon’s hysterical attacks on the previous government get more strident and dishonest the deeper he is in trouble.
I bet as a Pom you were a huge Liz Truss fan
So the continued growth over those 6 years was an economy in a mess .Remember that 7% growth compared to 0.7 from this lot .7% with a hand brake old cunt doing his best to undermine NZ and a world wide pandemic as well in the second term and the supply issues that caused .Also the low unemployment levels during those times .The only things rising under this lot are people leaving ,unemployment and poverty .
No surprises there Luxon is the king of the back flip as we saw before he was elected as PM .Every day before the election he was back flipping .The big problem here is he is not really interested in what is happening within NZ as he is too busy having trips at our expense so he does not have to face the reality of his inability to lead .The laughing hyena is becoming deputy PM in a couple of weeks god help us .He will be making more stupid statements every day to try to be relevent .Winston Trump will go even more feral
Prime Minister Luxon is doing a terrible job.
You don’t need to know a lot about cricket (batting especially) to quickly observe that Luxon would have been a bit of a duffer at that too. He does not hold his shape in shots, moves his head out of line and hoicks across the flight of the ball. In fairness, that may be partly because it’s street cricket on slow surfaces with a softish ball that bounces like a tennis ball, but all the same, it’s not pretty.
It’s clear to most on here with an ounce of intelligence, Luxon has never played cricket in his life nor has any political nous.
As Winstone Trumps ratshit party full of turds is slipping in the polls he is trying to differentiate himself from the other COCs.
