Winston Peters US trip: Call for Trump administration to focus on China moving into Pacific

Winston Peters says Chinese warships moving into the Pacific “needs” to be on the radar of Washington as he makes his first trip to the US as Foreign Minister.

Peters is travelling around the United States this week for discussions with the country’s top leaders following a tumultuous time in the White House.

He told Mike Hosking on Newstalk ZB he was willing to hear out the Trump administration and wanted to discuss the live firing exercises by a fleet of Chinese ships last month.

“I believe [the warship incident] is on their radar, and if it’s not in a major way, it needs to be and perhaps that will be part of the discussion we have.

“We’re approaching the Trump administration with our eyes wide open and prepared to listen, hear them out, hear their side of the story, and make sure that we get a chance to accurately present our side of the story as well.”

…NO WINSTON – DON’T TELL TRUMP ABOUT NEW ZEALAND!

Come on.

Hand on heart.

You know and I know that Donald Trump doesn’t know that NZ won’t allow nuclear ships to visit our waters.

As MAGA turns it’s eye on the Pacific and pushing against China, NZ is already being named as a slacker when it comes to defence spending, what happens when Trump is told we won’t have American Nuclear ships here?

I think Trump is crazy enough to immediately demand a ship visit as a symbolic gesture to China and threaten us with Tariffs if we don’t.

What will Luxon do when that phone call comes through from Trump?

Actual photo of our PM on the phone to Trump: “Hey, I just met you, and this is crazy
But here’s my number, so call me maybe
It’s hard to look right at you, baby
But here’s my number, so call me maybe
Hey, I just met you, and this is crazy
But here’s my number, so call me maybe
And all the other boys try to chase me
But here’s my number, so call me maybe

Winston, for the love of Christ man, don’t tell him where you come from!

  1. It is no doubt a shock for codgers around the world, but the post WWII era is over. Trumpy will stick it to anyone from aids positive to starving kids and Mexicans. The common denominator is he is really down on non whites.

Winston is on a loser, he can crawl, keep his head down diplomatically or assert NZ’s independence-it will mean diddly to the TrumpFather. Nothing will change until Americans get up on their hind legs and stop the MAGAs.

  2. We might do well out of this because NZ is maybe the only truly free trade nation, in that we have zero protectionism.

It needs to be remembered that Trump’s tariffs are reciprocal – a reaction to barriers other countries have been imposing for many years to block US imports.

    • Nobody does well out of trade deals with the US, especially with Trump at the helm. He forged an FTA with Canada in his first presidency and this time around he says it was a ‘bad deal’. His world view is one where there are only winners and losers- guess which side we would be on in a trade deal with Trump? Get Real!!

    • Well, that would be cool – reciprocal no tariffs – Winston and Trump sticking it to the Wisconsin dairy lobby and the midwest feedlotters but it seems a long shot.

  3. is the time coming to choose sides.
i don’t think we will be allowed to stand on the side and say that we are neutral.
we will have to toe someone’s line.
although there may be some dead rats to swallow, obviously we are a
western liberal democracy and as a small fish we follow our neighbour, australia.

    • Neutrality is only possible if you are a rich, well armed and disciplined country.
New Zealand is none of these.

  4. I hope he has the bals to push for a change of policy and let tye nuclear ships in .Thousands of navy personnel on shore leave would boost our economy as would the supply of stores. Why this policy has lasted sollong is beyond me .

    • Talk to the Japanese about the consequences of having American bases in your country before you start singing the praises of having US Navy personnel ‘on shore leave’!!

  5. The ridiculous nuclear ship ban should be binned.
We are not and neither can we afford to be either hostile to our allies or wealthy and strong enough to be neutral.

    • Yep he’s been there done that with the ole ponytail puller.
So the ponytail puller and pussy grabber out on the course together.

  6. As if Aus haven’t already raised the issue with the Sepo’s.
Winstone just rattling his weenie trying to look like the big man.
