Mortgage arrears at an eight-year high – Centrix
The economic climate remains challenging with all manner of debt creating hardship for consumers and businesses alike, according to the latest report by credit agency Centrix.
The February credit report indicates mortgage arrears were at an eight-year high, with personal loans, buy-now-pay-later (BNPL), retail energy and telco arrears on the rise.
Consumer credit defaults also increased by 42% on the year earlier, while personal insolvencies showed signs of an uptick, but remained below historical levels.
Financial hardship cases reached the highest level in five years, at 14,700 accounts, though arrears were 3% down over the year earlier — the first year-on-year improvement since December 2021.
But hardships were still up 20% on the year earlier, with 46% related to mortgage payments, 30% to credit card debt and 16% to personal loans.
Consumer and personal loans arrears rose 9.7% and BNPL arrears increased by 8.6%, month on month, though were down on the year earlier.
Retail energy payment arrears rose to 5.2% month-on-month or by 6% on the year earlier, while telco arrears rose nearly 11%.
Mortgage arrears reached an eight-year high, with 23,700 home loans past due — a 6% year-on-year increase.
The economy is in far worse shape than is being acknowledged and it’s being driven by this Government’s inane user pays Austerity agenda.
While National have borrowed more than Labour, most of that was for tax cuts we can’t afford while hollowing out public service budgets.
National will scream they have put more money into health than Labour, but what that always misses is that National has underfunded what Health actually needed!
This Government purposely under funded Public health so that they could manufacture a crisis and slash costs so as to fund their tax cuts and landlord loop holes!
In the Budget, National allocated just 2.9% increase to health services but inflation was 3.3% and population growth 2.6% while an ageing population adds more to costs.
National gave 2.9% for health but we needed 8% to stand still, that under funding has manufactured a crisis National are attempting to use privatisation to solve.
On top of this Austerity Agenda, National have quietly moved everything to a User Pays model.
Bernard Hickey is scathing…
An administered, unnecessary & counter-productive inflation shock
Govt’s move to user-pays in transport & infrastructure is administering an inflation shock; Shift from Govt-funded investment to private funding is forcing the RBNZ mortgage rates higher for longer
-
- The Government is widening its drive to turn public capital and investment costs into consumer price inflation that the Reserve Bank has to control with high interest rates.
- In recent days a rash of Government-controlled and driven price setters have signalled double-digit rises in prices, rates and fees in the next couple of years, due to the Government’s drive to reduce public borrowing and force their capital costs and investments off into private sector and council debt serviced through new or higher user charges, and higher council rates.
- They include: Metlink (43% increase for off-peak bus and train fares from July 1), 51%-Government-owned gentailer Mercury (9.7% increase in average residential electricity bills from April 1), Environment Canterbury (9.9% rates increase from July 1) Dunedin City Council (10.5% from July 1, followed by 10.2% and 10.1% increases in the following two years), Tauranga City Council(12.5% from July 1), Hutt City Council (13.4% from July 1, then 12.9% in 2026/2027), Invercargill City Council (9.5% from July 1) and Ashburton District Council (9.8% from July 1).
- This comes on top of plans announced over the last year to increase Government insurance levies by as much as 72%, to nearly treble the international tourist levy, to hike work visa fees 53%; to increase motor vehicle registration fees by 45%; to lift MPI fees by 18%; to reimpose the $5 prescription charge, and to remove subsidies for electric vehicles.
- The Government has argued it needs to return the Budget to surplus and reduce borrowing to take inflation pressure off the economy, which would allow the Reserve Bank to lower interest rates faster than would otherwise have been the case, which would in turn stimulate the economy.
- However, the administered price shock is forcing the Reserve Bank to hold interest rates higher for longer than expected and higher than seen after previous recessions, which means the cost-shifting and debt-shifting is proving counter-productive.
…this constant scam of giving you a pittance in tax cuts while charging you huge increases tricked the sleepy hobbits of Muddle NuZilind.
What’s the point of that $15 a week Tax cut when they are then charging you $200 extra a month in new charges?
Nicola Willis is a former acolyte of the Free Market NZ Initiative and her next budget is so severe the Reserve Bank Governor resigned and Winston is eyeing up a snap election, so I’m not sure hoping her idealogical fervour is any solution.
Dear Kiwis, your post-covid bitterness has been manipulated by the Political Right so they can strangle off the common good for their donors interests while our hungriest kids are fed corporate slop, but as long as da Māaares and da Trans get owned, you don’t mind getting robbed by the rich do you?
Happy Days.

I thought the herald was not allowed to report this sort of truth any more .Mind blowing ,what will the new share holder think of the reality of his pet government
People attacked Jacinda for careing about the people of NZ and now they worship a gaggle of women who dont give a toss about anyone including children .If these so called mothers gave a toss about the kids of now and the future they would imeadiatly step aside and take the skin head and his gang with them .It is easy to see where Trump is getting his lunatic ideas from .
There is much regret over the attacks on Jacinda. Much of the hatred was stirred up by alt right influenced social media. We live in dangerous times with an ever increasing number of bad actors at large. Jacinda is a lovely person that as Prime Minister had genuine goodwill for all people.
Then there’s that other problem. If your economy shrinks a bit but your population goes up a bit. There’s even less to go around. Those calcs are never included not in official or unofficial language.
The bigger problem here is if you have 3 demographic segments are declining or stagnant in population and 1 is growing then you’ll almost inevitably hit a point where the growing segment takes control from the non growing ones.
And I think the last election results confirms my bias. Fundamentally we are past the point where we can stop climate change. So better to have more economic resources on hand to cope with The National Party of Aotearoa New Zealand’s mismanagement.
Thank you providing the evidence behind this Martyn and we always knew the tax cuts were a rort. New Zealand voters will not make the same mistake in voting this corrupt lot in again.
And Simeon Brown, just another corrupt National minister.

you think they voted them in this time even though they knew they were lying to voters .Clearly racisim is a powerful tool still
What the current government wanted to do was to copy the Key government. Key removed about 30,000 positions from central government during his tenure, all while stimulating the economy with an infrastructure construction boom. So overall, money was removed from Wellington and put in the pockets of actual workers. It got him reelected.
This hasn’t worked this time because firstly there are no infrastructure projects ready to go and secondly, they have had to stop unfunded and uncosted ‘landmine’ projects left over by the previous government.
Oh Andrew you are truly naive. Key was left with a booming economy which he ran down and it was left to Labour to pick up the prices and rebuild again. Now we are seeing the running down of the country and economy again because of unnecessary cuts to the public sector. You can’t perform the same tasks with less staff when your immigration numbers continually increase. Economics 101.
I believe the term was “Rock star economy.” Hahahaha. That didn’t last long. Quit after it lost puff.
There was a major earthquake and they had to rebuild Christchurch so you obviously lack any reliable memory cells, that would explain your overall ignorance regarding real world events. It was billions of insurance dollars coming into the economy that made the Key governments job easy although most people in Christchurch would tell you that they failed in the rebuild task as well.
If you want to talk about unfunded and uncoated projects the National party had a motorway from Christchurch to Ashburton on their wish list that numerous National supporting muppets kept complaining about after Labour was elected, it didn’t cost Robertson anything to ignore that unlike Willis who has wasted $300 million plus because she is too stupid to understand the necessity of a reliable freight connection and the total mass required to be moved.
Bonnie for PM
There was state houses and ferry terminal rebuilds that could be happening now but Nicola couldn’t see outside her Atlas bubble.
On the button again .
Which right-wing ‘junk tank’ is pulling Willis’s strings? She doesn’t know enough about our economy or our society to form any conclusion on her own.
She has been a right wing lobby mouth piece even at fonterra
When Willis looks back on her career her legacy will be having 4 children, nothing else.
At least she included a banana with her marmite sandwich for school lunches, perhaps she can replace seemore.
The Thatcher, even today in the hoos, is look, blaim, lets continue, why, we are totally fucked.
How, blaim him, and who you, fuck, is Shackpher in the room.
No birth mother, your Thatcher gob, is like the last hated Prime Minister in Britain!s, cultural care.
What was Nationals view for the future of NZ ? waiting, what was it ?
Yeah Nah, there wasn’t one.
Just some hustlers from the rich side of the railway tracks saving us from total ruin.
Two things we kind of need now are shitloads of cheap electricity and some ferries and Willis is incapable of getting that done. But her big mouth will blame anyone else for that.
