Wellington Water chairman mulls resigning after damning report
Wellington Water board chair Nick Leggett says he is “taking soundings” on whether he should resign after a scathing report revealed possible theft and problems at his organisation.
“I could be the sacrificial lamb,” he told Morning Report on Tuesday.
He could also help with the fix, he told the programme.
“I think the leadership, and improving things, is where we need to be heading with this.”
Meanwhile, an urgent meeting has been called in the wake of a damning report into Wellington Water.
The report – released on Monday – found structural problems and theft at the agency, and said the capital’s ratepayers were paying nearly three times more for water repairs than in other parts of the country.
It is the second report to show poor control of contractors and finances.
Look, we all love shitting on Wellington, but even for them this water report is such self inflicted fuckwittery you don’t know whether to laugh or call social services.
Surely they have breached self sabotage and have become masochistic and need to be on a self harm at this stage?
Notice how they haven’t sacked Leggett outright and he’s ‘considering’ resigning?
FFS.
There is just such a shameful glee watching Wellington fuck up their water, public transport and basic business area that they become the gift that keeps giving.
The fundamental issue is we have done everything on the cheap and instead of real investment we have had bureaucratic relationships that go no where because they aren’t even any extra funding, just a new layer of bureaucracy between the people and the water they need.
Watching Wellington drown from its own incompetence is glorious.
Now you know what the rest of us feel like when trying to deal with Wellington.
Here’s my prediction, nothing will get fixed, tihngs will only get worse and they’ll still be squabbling when the next big earthquake hits, and then the whole thing will be moot anyway.
Happy Days.
Increasingly having independent opinion in a mainstream media environment which mostly echo one another has become more important than ever, so if you value having an independent voice – please donate here.

It’s called corruption.
Its where the local and central government bureaucracies have arrived.
Why would anyone resign? I mean, there’s been an apology, hasn’t there? Anything more would just be vengeful right-wing hate-speech trolling. Wouldn’t it?
These are Wellington bureaucrats. Be gentle. . . .
Well Leggett is a National party stooge, so nothing to see here right?
Nicholas Oliver Leggett (born 1979) is a former New Zealand politician and, as of 2016, a member of the New Zealand National Party. He was Mayor of Porirua from 2010 until 2016, and at the time of his election in October 2010, he was the youngest mayor in New Zealand.
Is this the same Nick Leggat who is the knob in charge of infrastructure and was the lobbiest for the Road Transport Forum. Or have we been saddled with two idiots with the same name.
Wellington Streets regularly explode in showers of shit and water fountains. It was a tragedy that the right won the 3 Waters ideological battle because the work still needs doing. In my beloved Far North, one town–Kaeo–has been on a boil water notice for 10 years! Locals do rain water collection and or buy bottled drinking water.
It is all very well to mock Wellington, but look at your own water systems and bludging neo lib ‘Watercare’ organisations too, only a handful of District Councils have got it right.
3 Waters was just another layer of bureaucracy and a centralization of power and would have solved nothing while smoothing the path to privatization. For years in New Plymouth we were told by Council that we used more water per capita than any other city. Once they started to install water meters the Council discovered that the problem was leaking pipes and aged infrastructure. Now they are boasting about how much water they have saved by doing the upgrading they had previously ignored.
I share your schadenfreude Martyn
Wellington suffers from a high degree of recycled incompetence because, outside of Weta Workshops, there is little private industry to act as a reference for efficiency and competence. If you have a bullshit degree from Vic Uni and a few contacts you can be ‘asked to resign’ from one job in government only to reappear in another a few weeks later, seemingly unblemished.
Andrew Wellington may have VUW’s now-mixed products, but Parliament has more of the seditious spawn of Waikato Uni who think they’re circus performers and waste time and taxpayer money proving this every time they bother turning up.
