As MAGA turns it’s eye on the Pacific and pushing against China, NZ is already being named as a slacker when it comes to defence spending, what happens when Trump is told we won’t have American Nuclear ships here?
I think Trump is crazy enough to immediately demand a ship visit as a symbolic gesture to China and threaten us with Tariffs if we don’t.

Any change to New Zealand’s nuclear fee status requires a change of legislation. Does anyone seriously think such a change be done under Urgency in a day or so?
It would almost require a legislative process taking many months.

In the mean time ,while we are blowing trump under the desk the Chinese will have given billions of aid to our pacific neighbors and NZ will be stuck between a rock and a hard place as we need to trade with China .No doubt the big ego CEO will do a deal with Trump for the USA to take all of our exports that we would normally send to China and for us to pay 25% tariffs on those exports .
Nuclear armed is the issue, the US will neither confirm nor deny. Luxon just doesn’t have the know how let alone the skills to handle any hi level nuclear discussions with the USA. God help us if a really serious disaster besets this country before he is kicked out.
LUXON TO CABINET. How about we tell the Americans we will allow nuclear ship visits but we do not want any just now because there is this really bad epidemic, called Waitangi, at the moment and it is really infectious so it is better if US Navy ships do not come here. How about that?

With the exception of one or two older cruisers, which may now be in the reserve fleet, the US Navy aircraft carriers and submarines are the only vessels which are nuclear powered.
The aircraft carriers have no need to come within thousands of miles of New Zealand, likewise the nuclear powered attack submarines. The nuclear powered missile submarines generally stay submerged while on patrol, likewise they have no need to sail anywhere near New Zealand.
So the likelihood of a nuclear powered and/or nuclear armed US Navy ship or submarine visiting New Zealand is very low.
And the likelihood of us having any idea is a US Nuclear Sub is in our waters is zero.
Luxon would cave in.

Trump did try anything wrt nuclear ship in NZ during the first four year term (2016-2020) when he similarly went after China, so what makes you think he will this time?

You have a lot more confidence than I do that Trump could actually find us on a globe. Luxon would say “yes sir, how many ships and where do you want to visit” is my guess if the question was ever asked. He might have to check with Seymour and Peters first though.

If Trump said get rid of your 1980s virtue signalling anti nuke legislation or you‘re on your own, the government would likely go along with that. It’s easy to have high minded principles until the Americans confirm they won’t be saving us. Chloë‘s mob would be outraged but she isn’t in cabinet.
