Our Emissions target vs our Mining aspiration – what’s the point of being a Yes Government if you are agreeing to the worst things?

There has been a lot of talk by the Prime minister that we are a whiney bottom feeder negative Nelly where as we should be full of vacant optimism like he is.

He claims our ‘solution’ to our ‘growth’ problem is mining while ignoring the pollution that growth and mining creates by releasing an Emissions target that is a joke in the face of January 2025 being the hottest January on record.

He demands we be a Yes Government, but what’s the point of being a Yes Government if you are agreeing to the worst things?

Last week we had economic data that showed unemployment up to 5.1% while the Government expands benefit sanctions!

The Government is trying to force 350 000 job seekers into work when there is less than 11000 jobs on trademe and 5000 on Seek while the Government have sacked 9520 public sector workers!

Where are the jobs?

Unemployment is 5.1% for the general population, but it’s 9.7% for Māori and 10.7% for our Pacifica whanau, are Māori and Pacifica collateral damage for National’s growth agenda?

The revamped Public Housing policy Chris Bishop promised and cost us $500 000 from Emergency Housing for Bill English to write a plan over text message that amounts to selling off public housing in posh suburbs and pushing poor people into ghettos in poorer suburbs.

Chris Bishop argues that Kāinga Ora’s construction costs are 12 percent above market rate while ignoring the fact 70% of State Tenants have disabilities and the extra cost is to make them functional!

Stats NZ reported last week that building consents fell 9.8% to 33,600 after the Government suspended Kāinga Ora’s new building work – the Government is floundering over a mistake they made!!!

They have borrowed billions for tax cuts and landlord loopholes while hollowing out public service budgets with their austerity program to implement policy that benefits their donors!

They have strangled off the common good for corporate power.

Expanding gold and coal mining while pretending that is somehow the mining solution is so disingenuous and explains why Shane Jones hasn’t wanted an actual debate on mining and has played culture war games because all his contribution amounts to is a pay off to the mining sector for donating to him!

These aren’t solutions, they are causing more climate change damage WHILE the planet melts in real time…

Hottest January on record mystifies climate scientists

A run of record-breaking global temperatures has continued, even with a La Niña weather pattern cooling the tropical Pacific.

The Copernicus Climate Change Service said last month was the warmest January on record, with surface – air temperatures 1.75C above preindustrial levels.

…again, what is the point of being a Yes Government if you are only saying yes to the worst things?

  1. I see UK Labour government is opening gas and oil fields and setting up nuclear power stations to finance the green energy .We need to follow their example.

      • Kiwi Rail should not be running the ferries and it was your lot that let the budget for the ferries double in cost.
I was not suggesting we go nuclear as we have vast geothermal reserves to tap but we will need oil and gas for years to come .Jacinda may have earned Brownie points for stopping development of our oil fields but it made us more dependent on imports

    • Looking forward to the day that you return home seeing how you like their policies that much.

  2. I suggest we wipe the Emissions Trading Scheme and get on with mining.

New Zealand and all New Zealanders will be better for it.

Trevor I refer you AGAIN to the NZ Fabian society Website and the excellent lecture of October 10 2024 by Engineer David Keats. This is a man with world wide experience of efficiently producing energy.
He produced an analysis of why various countries produce differently( Australia, for example, is restricted by geography in the amount of hydropower it can produce)
Aotearoa is capable of producing nearly 100 percent of energy from renewable sources. The present reason for the coal fired Huntly station is for when lake water levels are too low and this can be remedied by better planning.
THE REASON PEOPLE’S POWER BILLS ARE SO HIGH IS BECAUSE OF GREEDY POWER COMPANIES WHO PAY HIGH DIVIDENDS TO THEIR OVERSEAS SHAREHOLDERS AND TO THE COALITION GOVERNMENT. IT IS NOT BECAUSE OF THE SUPPLY OF POWER.
(Sorry to shout but you do not seem to be paying attention.)
The greatest potential for increasing power supply to meet demand is with offshore wind farms- if seabed mining does not fuck that up first( Taranaki Bight being the best area).
We already have our wanker in chief Shane Jones we do not need to add pommy wankers to the mix.

  4. Just letting you know not all Labour Parties are tree huggers. No wish to go there now so I will see out my days in this country.
