Gaza Strip

Attacks: There are no safe places for the militarily-dominated population in Gaza, who find themselves subjected to airstrikes and other missile attacks on buildings, homes and many essentialfacilities, as well as constant gunfire and invasions by Israeli forces. The Israeli Navy continues to fire missiles, targeting facilities and buildings along the entire Gaza shoreline.

Victims: 19 more people have been killed within the past 48 hours, bringing the total number killed in Gaza since 7 October 2023 to at least 46,584. Another 71 have been wounded, bringing that total to 109,731. The daily average number of men, women and children killed in Gaza is at least 100 and that of those injured is now more than 236.

Raping Palestinians: Israel’s weapon of war

During the summer of 2024, horrifying details began to emerge of Israeli occupation forces raping Palestinians they had detained. While revelations from Sde Teiman prison stirred debates both in Israel and abroad, the use of rape and sexual violence against Palestinians can be traced back to 1948. Tel Aviv has used sexual violence to torture, coerce, intimidate and break Palestinians for generations. MEMO looks into the systematic use of rape by Israel against Palestinians.

South Africa’s President demands end to hostilities in Gaza in his New Year’s message

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, in his New Year message released on Tuesday, called for the cessation of hostilities in Gaza and the release of hostages, Anadolu reports. “As the conflict in the Middle East continues, as genocide is perpetrated against the people of Gaza, and as Israeli hostages remain in captivity, we continue to call for the cessation of hostilities and the release of hostages,” Ramaphosa said in a statement. He said his country has stood firm in support of the Palestinian people’s struggle. “Just as we attained our freedom through the support and solidarity of many people and nations around the world, we continue to stand in solidarity with the victims of injustice in other parts of the world,” Ramaphosa said, referring to Israel’s ongoing genocidal war against Palestinians.

Israel splashes $150m in international PR to sway foreign opinion over Gaza genocide

Israel has earmarked an additional $150 million for its 2025 budget to reshape global opinion over its military actions in Gaza, according to the Knesset. The new budget represents a 20-fold hike from previous years to boost its propaganda known in Hebrew as “Hasbara“. The term refers to Israel’s efforts to explain and justify its policies, often perceived as propaganda aimed at controlling narratives surrounding its actions. With the support of American Jewish organisations, the expanded budget aims to influence and target various platforms, including US college campuses where pro-Palestine protests have taken place, social media and international press outlets. Critics have argued that this substantial investment seeks to justify Israel’s military actions in Gaza, which have drawn international condemnation due to high civilian casualties and allegations of targeting civilian infrastructure.

The Israeli government continues to justify its military operations claiming it is part of its targeting of Hamas fighters. It has continuously accused Hamas of using schools, hospitals, neighbourhoods and factories as military areas and of using Palestinian civilians as so-called “human shields“. It has also churned out satellite photos and excerpts of the “confession” of alleged Hamas detainees to back these claims up, yet none of the evidence is independently verifiable. However, independent verification of these claims remains challenging, leading to scepticism and criticism from international observers. Israel has been accused of genocide in Gaza, with Benjamin Netanyahu and former defence minister Yoav Gallant facing arrest warrants over war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Leslie Bravery is a Londoner with vivid World War Two memories of the Nazi blitz on his home town. In 1947/1948 His father explained to him what was happening to the Palestinians thus: “Any ideology or political movement that creates refugees in the process of realising its ambitions must be inhuman and should be opposed and condemned as unacceptable.” What followed confirmed this assessment of the Zionist entity a hundredfold. Now a retired flamenco guitarist, with a lifelong interest in the tragedy of what happened to the Palestinian people, he tries to publicise their plight. Because the daily injustices they suffer barely get a mention in the mainstream news media, Leslie edits/compiles a daily newsletter, In Occupied Palestine, for the Palestine Human Rights Campaign. These days, to preserve his sanity, he enjoys taking part in a drama group whenever possible!
