Palestinian Authority clashes with West Bank Resistance fighters

The decision by the Palestinian Authority to suspend Al Jazeera broadcasts on Wednesday has resulted in violent clashes between Palestinian security forces and local Resistance groups in Jenin, a city in the northern occupied West Bank, in the spotlight. Analysts say the decision is a way for the Palestinian Authority to score a win, ahead of Donald Trump’s presidency, and position itself to control a post-war Gaza.

The suspension order came after weeks-long deadly clashes between Palestinian Authority security forces and people opposed to Israeli Occupation in the northern city of Jenin and its adjacent refugee camp. As the fighting raged on, Al Jazeera aired several reports on the clashes that caused tensions to mount between the network and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’s Fatah movement.

The intra-Palestinian clashes erupted amid a major raid by Palestinian Authority forces on the Jenin refugee camp after the 5 December arrest of a Jenin Battalion commander on charges of possessing weapons and illicit funds.

Ramallah – On 5 December, Palestinian Authority (PA) forces launched what they referred to as a “security operation” in the Jenin refugee camp under the banner of ‘Protecting the Homeland’. To date, at least five Palestinians have been killed by PA security forces, including a female journalist who was reportedly shot in the head, a commander in the Jenin Brigades, and a 19-year-old who was shot and killed while riding a motorcycle.

Five PA officers have also been killed in the clashes. “The PA’s approach to Jenin is completely rejected. It is trying to solve a political issue through force and security means, and it is cooperating with the Israeli occupation,” Hani al-Masri, director general of the Palestinian Center for Policy Research and Strategic Studies (Masarat), told The New Arab.

Instead, the PA should be negotiating with the resistance on the best strategy forward in this particular phase.”
