2025 will be the year we will see whether or not the Labour Party can be saved and whether or not they can win back Auckland.
Behind the scenes there is an ideological knife fight occurring inside the Labour Party.
It’s pointless, counter productive and so on brand for Labour.
On one side there are those who want a wealth tax aimed at the mega wealthy to enable the first $20 000 to be tax free.
This would benefit pensioners, beneficiaries, the poor, the working classes, the middle classes and renters.
It would take the tax yoke off the poor and put it on the wealthy.
The wealthy gain their wealth off the backs of civil society and the infrastructure that society provides.
They can pay more.
Opponents cry out that we can’t tax unrealised wealth. Like fuck we can’t.
If they can borrow against their wealth, we can sure as fuck tax it.
If this means the multi-millionaire and the billionaire have to sell assets to cover their wealth tax, so fucking be it.
Do anyone of you care if these rich pricks can’t buy the latest personal jet so we can feed hungry kids in school and build better hospitals with more staff?
Fuck them!
However.
The anti-wealth tax clique are doing all they can to kill off the wealth tax by putting forward a Capital Gains Tax.
It won’t make any money for 3 years, so just in time to have all the political benefit go to the Opposition while you struggle for a term.
There has always been a group inside Labour who would prefer to control the losing side rather than lose control of the winning side.
The naked reality is the economy is so fucked and the possibility of an inflation spike generated by Trump’s tariffs by pushing up the dollar and causing petrol to jump means far more pain is still to come.
Labour has to offer REAL relief to people or their solution will sound weak, just the way the pitiful GST off fruit and vegetables sounded like Labour didn’t understand their pain.
Giving Kiwis their first $20 000 tax free funded by a wealth tax on the 1% is fucking economic justice!
What the Christ is the point of the Labour Party if it isn’t there to challenge the economic hegemony used to crush the lower classes for a rancid Plutocracy!
STAND AND FIGHT LABOUR!
The truth is we need BOTH taxes.
We need a Wealth tax that will provide the first $20 000 Tax Free for every Kiwi – AND we need a Capital Gains Tax that doesn’t include the occupied home.
We also need a sugar tax to fund free dental.
We need a pollution tax to fund free public transport.
A financial transaction tax to punish speculators.
If Labour put as much energy into regulating capitalism as they do stymieing David Parker – the Revolution would be won and over already Comrades!
Take the Summer to understand the enormity of the challenge in front of us.
Take the tax yoke off the poor and place it on the uber wealthy.
Tax the 1% to enable everyone (them included) get their first $20 000 tax free.
A Capital Gains Tax is important, but it isn’t the solution.
After 2 more years of this crazy fucking Government, Kiwis will want a solution.
If Labour wants to win the Auckland middle class vote they lost to the Greens, it takes more than a Capital Gains Tax!
If you look at Auckland, Labour’s vote was decimated in 3 ways.
Firstly to the right where National and ACT picked up.
Secondly the poor just didn’t bother voting at all and stayed home because GST off fruit and vegetables didn’t recognise their pain at all.
And thirdly, the middle class Auckland vote from the middle class Auckland suburbs walked away to the Greens instead because the Greens Wealth Tax was far better than Labour’s bullshit GST off fruit and vegetables.
If Labour want to win back Auckland, they need to promise something to the urban poor who didn’t vote – (free public transport & free dental) and they need to win back the middle class vote who voted Green because it had actual tax solutions (CGT AND a Wealth Tax).
If Labour do not step up with real solutions in 2025, they will not win 2026, it’s as simple as that.
Increasingly having independent opinion in a mainstream media environment which mostly echo one another has become more important than ever, so if you value having an independent voice – please donate here.

I agree with every damn word you say.
The Greens are the NEW DEAL LABOUR PARTY and the Millenials, Gen zed and Alpha’s know it.
The male voters who walked from Labour are waking up to that fact LABOUR ARE DEAD IN THE WATER.
Younger Maori are going Maori party and or Green. 2025/2026 is going to be the rise of the younger generation the realisation the old traditional parties are stale as and stuck in a 1940s to 1970s mindset and will never change is bringing this on.
I’m a classical leftist.
Therefore I abandoned faith in Labour many years ago.
Yes a wealth tax the bright line tax is a tax on property speculators anyway so there is no need for a capital gains tax.
The problem is a capital gains tax is so complex that it ends up with so many loopholes that there is little reward both the UK and OZ have capital gains tax and the tax recovers less than 2% of Govt revenue.
And that is before the cost of the huge bureaucracy that is required to administer the tax and then there is the issue of capital loss if you charge a capital gains tax It is expected that you pay a capital Loss at the same rate.Just the outgoings a govt would need when losses would occur during a recession.
But taxes also need to tax unnecessary ,wasteful, and health threatening, consumption as well such as a fuel and sugar Tax.
It should also be noted that the cost of Transport in NZ of $500 per week per person of which 88% is road transport is the real yoke around the NZ economy and until this addressed it will remain unaffordable for most.
Sorry, we are swallowing dead buffalos and voting NZF to try and ensure NACT have a hand break. The left have no chance in 2026 so it’s a wasted vote going to Labour, Greens or Maori party. Hopefully 2029 they’ll have a real chance but not 2026.
