Senior lawyers call for Treaty Principles Bill to be abandoned
Members of the King’s Counsel, some of New Zealand’s most senior legal minds, say the Treaty Principles Bill “seeks to rewrite the Treaty itself” and are calling on the prime minister and the coalition to “act responsibly now and abandon” it.
More than 40 KCs have written to the prime minister and attorney-general outlining their “grave concerns” about the substance of the Treaty Principles Bill and its wider implications for the country’s constitutional arrangements.
The bill is set to have its first reading in the House on Thursday, and has led to nationwide protests, with Prime Minister Christopher Luxon himself calling it “divisive”.
Prime Minister Chris Luxon was on Breakfast TV this week arguing that he is allowing this divisive political stunt through because that’s the reality of MMP, but that’s a nonsense defence because HE was the one who negotiated this deal to gain power, so it is his responsibility and it calls into question his supposed amazing deal negotiating skills that he was sold on!
The truth is Luxon is the weakest Prime Minister in NZ political history and he got played by David Seymour AND Winston Peters.
Luxon’s MMP excuse for Treaty Principles Bill is political cowardice personified, it was his desperation to gain power that blinded him to what ACT and NZF were going to do.
What happens next is on Luxon.
As the first vote is put, the Māori Party start a Haka which is immediately joined by those in the Gallery shutting down the vote and drowning everything else out.
A panicked Gerry Brownlee has called for the entire Gallery to be cleared and proceedings suspended!
This is the first time in modern political history that proceedings have been suspended.

The opposition were exhibiting high IQ in parliament today and that comment about David Seymour being KKK having a swipe card to the beehive is very true, ACT are but a pale shadow of the US Tea Party and Jim Crow laws.
Shutting down debate in parliament is great stuff if you don’t like the bill before you. Not so great if you have a bill of your own that you want to present. Until we get a more representative form of democracy than parliament , why not respect the conventions and debate contentious issues?
Shutting down a bill that is not going f’ing anywhere is not shutting down a normal bill is it. If this f’wit Seymour had an ounce of genuine transparent motivation about him, he would not have put out ideas about a Treaty and completely ignored one of the parties to that Treaty. All this bullshit of trying it make look like anything more than a sham would normally be laughable. The fact that TPM can be an embarrassment is irrelevant. Seymour is a bought and paid for wanker.
There is no benefit to letting rats like Seymour speak.
This wasn’t a debate, it was a pre-arranged coalition clusterfuck that ironically was bought forward to appease a very minor party. Hell the bill even has it’s own Government lawyers tearing it down.
Why are they wasting tax payers money if they are intent on this bill going no further than the first reading simply because of a coalition agreement?
Meanwhile health, the police force continue to be under funded and the defense force gets a 0% increase( an oxymoron if there ever was one).

While the colonialist parliament sits on top of a system of representation which is only pseudo-democratic, there is a constant risk that tremors coming up from below will upset the workings of Parliament’s own internal democracy. There is anger within the population which is heard and seen by only a few Members of Parliament, in particular those from Te Pati Maori. Because this great anger is being channeled through only a handful of parliamentarians, it takes disruptive forms. Since Parliament as a whole has lost the knack of listening to the people, it should heed the voice of those few members who still have some idea of the mood of the people. If it cannot even do that, it will face a bleak future.
A genuine democracy for all, aka rangatiratanga has already been brought a step closer by the ill-considered Treaty Principles Bill. Read the signs of the times. Rangatiratanga and whakaminenga flags on the streets, on the hilltops and hanging over the motorway bridges. The colonialist flag nowhere to be seen. People talking about rangatiratanga on every marae and at every street march. That is where the real debates are being held. That is where the “conventions”, the tikanga, are being respected. The colonialist Parliament must either pull back from its assault upon rangatiratanga or accept the consequences.

Correct but given this was fast tracked it was not given the due process of rigorous debate. It was done and voted on within a day. Disrupting the process for such a debate led to a protest haha, not disruption, that was brought about by the appalling government and it’s coalition agreement with ACT.

Whatever punishment brownlie chooses to hand out will become badges of honour to those who receive them and prove their point without a shadow of a doubt. They are being punished for speaking their minds.
