The tired racism of Hobsons Pledge has been exposed by the ASA ruling on their deceitful Newspaper advert as misleading and socially irresponsible

Te Pāti Māori Co-leaders Rawiri Waititi and Debbie Ngarewa-Packer welcome today’s ruling from the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), which found that a Hobson’s Pledge advertisement regarding customary marine titles was misleading and socially irresponsible.

The two-page wraparound ad, published in The New Zealand Herald, suggested that nearly the entire coastline of Aotearoa is under threat of being awarded to Māori through customary marine titles, implying that this would lead to widespread restrictions on public beach access.

The ASA upheld more than 650 complaints, stating that Hobson’s Pledge’s claims were materially misleading and failed to substantiate their arguments. The Board also recognised that the advertisement unnecessarily perpetuated fear, further marginalising Māori.

“This is exactly the kind of divisive and racist rhetoric that has no place in Aotearoa,” says Te Pāti Māori Co-leader Rawiri Waititi.

“Hobson’s Pledge is playing on misinformation to sow fear and division. This campaign feeds into the age-old tactic of pitting Pākehā against Māori in an attempt to undermine Māori rights that are legally recognised, culturally significant, and protected under Te Tiriti o Waitangi.”

“The ruling highlights what we already knew—that this ad was not only misleading but also socially irresponsible on the part of Hobson’s Pledge and NZME,” said Co-leader Debbie Ngarewa-Packer.

“NZME and advertising outlets must take responsibility for the content they publish and promote, especially when it is harmful to Māori and perpetuates dangerous narratives.”

“It is everyone’s duty to stop giving a platform to this kind of fear-based, racist, and misleading propaganda. It must continue to be called out for what it is,” Waititi said.

“Te Pāti Māori stands strong in protecting the rights of tangata whenua and upholding our responsibilities as kaitiaki. It’s time for all of Aotearoa to stand with us in rejecting these damaging and deceptive campaigns.”

“As we have demanded, NZME must now apologise to all tangata whenua across its platforms. It must apologise to all staff, their standards must be reviewed and there must be a commitment to the protection of tangata whenua,” said Ngarewa-Packer.

“This ruling is a win for the truth and a reminder of our collective duty to honour Te Tiriti. This is the type of rhetoric this government continues to embolden.

“Te Pāti Māori will continue to fight for a future where Māori rights are respected, and all New Zealanders understand the truth about our shared history and our collective path forward,” she said.

…this ruling comes in the same week that Hobson’s Pledge launches defamation action against Matthew Hooton for speaking his mind about Hobson’s Pledge that was censored on The Working Group.

The Hobson’s Pledge advert was found to be misleading and socially irresponsible and their attempt to punish Matthew Hooton for free speech while pretending to be champions for free speech reminds everyone what utter hypocrites they all are.

  1. The dirty Herald was happy to run this steaming pile of an ad, it certainly chimes in with the current attack on all things Māori.

If Te Tiriti remains ultimately unmolested by Act then capital suffers because Māori will retain their intellectual property rights and ability to have input into all manner of environmental and social matters.

Contrast this to Stuff who refused to run a full page NZ Palestine Solidarity Network ad that was facts not all shit like Hobson’s. The ad was a list of verbatim quotes from Israeli Knesset members saying in the bluntest terms that they wanted the extermination of Palestinians. Stuffs rejection was expressed as not being on the content of the ad, but rather the effect it might have on the anniversary of Oct.7. “Sensitivity” was their weird criteria.

  2. To see Hooten and Brash fighting, defaming and suing each other brings great pleasure. Couldn’t happen to more deserving arseholes.

  3. The Right wing advert spinning lies declared “misleading and socially irresponsible”.
Breaking news! Historic first. Boy bet that is a game changer.
Meting out a a vicious 5 second beating to the offenders with a wet bus ticket.
That’s learning them good. They will never try that again ever. That’s for sure.
But the White Right wing using the same lies to win the 2023 election is OK.
Of course it its only an election after all.
The British invasion and theft of a country and destruction of a people is also just fine.
Of course it was only the Mayories who were invade killed and ripped off.
    Nothing of any import.
Equal teatment for all. We’re all one people ya know.
    White Justice in a nutshell.

  4. Hooten is intelligent and a laugh. Don’t agree with his politics, except when he calls Luxon incredibly dumb, but I always enjoy watchin Hoot’s and he say outrageous things pretty reliably, which is refreshing.

  5. How awful when you’ve spent a whole life from the time of birth having ingrained in you that white thinking and ways of living is superior. To your very core you’ve believed race theories and the coloured man is coming to take more from you. The Great Gadsby told us so.

To be an old bloke, die and the shock of  finding Heaven is compartmentalised with unscaleable walls. In the white quadrant there’s dull, Stepford Wives like people sitting round having ‘tea’ on the lawns with little cups and saucers and the occassional broadcast of hymns to liven the day.

Meanwhile over the wall is the joyful sounds of chatter, laughter, games being played and partying as all God’s people are rewarded for their earthly toils.

  6. It must be bad to be rejected by a right wing white committee .Hobson may have muttered some thing but it was not a pledge at all because he was already plotting how to steal the land .Hobson also told Maori they would “retain their perfect independence”

  7. Free speech can have consquences nothong wrong with that. Hobsons pledge just got theirs and Hooten may or my not get his.
    Whats the problem?

  8. It was a campaign in support of the limiting Maori customary rights to 5% of the coast.

National gave iwi the right to go to court and have UNDRIP signed at the UN, then have backtracked big time.

    • nothing new there Luxon is the king of back flips remember when he was in opposition back flipping daily .Notice how affordable water is fast becoming 3 waters with councils now trying to form large water entities ,redoing what was repealed by the dick heads
