Poll: 54% of voters think Hipkins should stay as Labour leader

Fifty-four per cent of voters think Chris Hipkins should remain as Labour leader, according to the latest 1News Verian poll.

The future of the former PM, who served in the top job for nine months, has been the subject of speculation as the opposition party looks to rebuild following its defeat at last year’s election.

In the poll, around half the respondents were asked: “Do you think Chris Hipkins should now remain as the leader of the Labour Party or step down?”

The most important part of this Poll was that 75% of Labour supporters back him to stay.

Chippy has support to remain Leader of the Opposition because he is a decent bloke at a time when an out of touch rich prick PM is slashing public services while boasting about his wealth!

Luxon’s hubris and arrogance is very ugly to most Kiwis and they are looking at Chippy and seeing someone who isn’t a ruthless CEO.

So if it isn’t Chippy – it’s the lack of actual policy to challenge the current status quo.

In the TVNZ Poll, Labour was the biggest winner in terms of year on year from the election.

On Election Night they got 26%, in the TVNZ Poll one year on they had clawed back 3% and ended on 29%.

Labour urgently need policy, meaning Chippy can’t squander this moment.

Stand for something Labour, stand for something!

  1. “So if it isn’t Chippy – it’s the lack of actual policy to challenge the current status quo.”
And therein lies the key to it all possums.
McAnulty, Verall or Edmonds maybe, but please no Sepuloni after that Children’s Commissioner debacle

  2. “Chippy”. Sure stands out from the competition in any contest for the party leadership. And with that long record of confused under-delivery, he fits right in. Truly a Warren Freer for the 21st century. . .

  3. How many times must it be said…NZ Labour will go nowhere until they finally retire Rogernomics and the neo liberal State and associated legislation. A major shift, and they only have a year to do it. Chippy in charge of a “for the many not the few” revitalised Labour would be fine, but if they maintain no wealth tax and no CGT what is the point?

  4. Being a “Decent guy” isn’t enough to tackle this Coalition of Chaos. We need not just facts to rebuke their lies but Gusto.

We are in 2024, people consume media in short snippet fleeting ways through TikTok, shorts, Long form on Youtube etc. With all the horrible shit this government is doing Labour and Chippy need to BE MAD, I don’t want polite fact-checking. Chippy needs to burn them with their hypocrisy over and over again and you need to see it UNTIL YOU’RE SICK OF IT. You need to point out they’ve borrowed more money than Labour did except for their last year of Covid and call them the Economic Vandals that they are. WE NEED AN AGGRESSIVE CHANGE IN TONE!

If Chippy is not cut out for that, no matter how decent he is, he is not up to the role of the Opposition that is DESPERATELY required to COUNTER this destructive government. The right are rightfully laughing at Chippy as they know he is a handbrake on the Labour party of what is it’s real potential.

We need BIG vision and sorry but when I look at Chippy he might mean well, but he doesn’t offer a LOUD and CONVINCING enough alternative vision to this beat down politics this government is fast tracking without proper democratic process.

Putting our bets on Chippy, I feel is like putting your bets on Biden in the US elections. They knew it wasn’t looking good for Biden and they pressured him out. PUT COUNTRY OVER POLITICS!! If there is another 6 years of this shit AND WE ALLOW THIS SHIT to go on, we have no one but ourselves to blame as they cement their Colonized outlook on Aotearoa New Zealand. And clinging to your ego Chippy to remain as the leader will rubberstamp these guys decisions instead of fixing the the dire state of this country.

  5. There is no doubt that Chris Hipkins is a decent man. You could go so far as to say that he is a paragon of decency. “Fitting, suitable and appropriate to the circumstances of the case… Conforming to recognized standards of propriety.”
However when we talk about “fitting to…” or “conforming to…” what follows the preposition is of key importance. Hipkins fits and conforms to the standards of a neo-liberal anglosphere western state. If you think those standards will work for us in the months and years to come then Chris Hipkins is your man.
On the other hand the German academic Tarik Cyril Amar penned an interesting discourse touching on the concept of decency in the Third Reich, and came to the conclusion that it was not very different to the concept people hold to in western nations of the present day. He is of the opinion that those standards of decency while not objectionable in themselves are, never-the-less, leading the west, and with it the entire world, to an imminent catastrophe.
I just heard Chris Hipkins say in answer to a question of whether Israel should be sanctioned for genocide that he would “have to seek advice” on that question. There is nothing wrong with seeking advice. A decent person will seek advice and listen to it. That is the mark of a decent person. But there is also something lacking here. After a year of horror, Hipkins has, apparently, been unable to form his own opinion on the matter. He still needs to take advice, or more probably, directives from unspecified others.
If you feel that is satisfactory, then once again, Chris Hipkins is your man.

    • Funny. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caspar_Milquetoast
Caspar Milquetoast is a fictional character created by H. T. Webster for his comic strip The Timid Soul. Webster described Caspar Milquetoast as “the man who speaks softly and gets hit with a big stick”.
The character’s name is derived from a bland and fairly inoffensive food, milk toast, which, light and easy to digest, is an appropriate food for someone with a weak or “nervous” stomach. …

  6. Nope – not for me – a working class hero is something to be. Hipkins ain’t it and his “brand” is tainted by being the “face” of the covid lockdowns and mandates.

  7. Safe guard, who, oor side as the op, punches, and they have no canvas answer, send in the clowns, who winnie, an his tosser.

  8. The thinking comes down to old wives wisdom:

HANDSOME IS AS HANDSOME DOES definition: said to mean that you should judge someone by their actions and not by their appearance

He may look like a decent human being but by what actions can voters assess him as such?
