Māori and Pacific young people dropped from list eligible for free GP visits in Hawke’s Bay

Māori and Pacific young people in Hawke’s Bay are no longer eligible for free GP and nurse visits based on ethnicity, after the health minister intervened.

The move has been labelled “devastating for the community” by one MP.

Over the weekend, Stuff reported on a recent change to funding for free GP and registered nurse visits in Hawke’s Bay for rangatahi aged 14-24.

Instead of being available for all young people in the region, new criteria were introduced from September 1, making Māori and Pacific, those living in high deprivation, those who hold a Community Services Card, or those with specific long-term health conditions eligible.

But this has again changed, with the Māori and Pacific criteria now dropped from the list, after Health Minister Dr Shane Reti spoke with health officials about the policy on Monday.

…WTF just happened here?

So we were giving all young people free health, then the Government manufactures a funding crisis by purposely underfunding the budget to demand massive cuts.

The region tries to keep some free services for Māori and Pacifica kids who live in poverty and have more health issues and who die younger – and the Government decides that is race based health funding and cuts it altogether!

We have just dumped free health for all these kids, had a chance to save it for the Māori and Pacifica kids and dumped that too for ideological reasons!!!

WE JUST DUMPED FREE HEALTH FOR KIDS AND DOUBLED DOWN ON THAT DUMP BY HURTING MĀORI AND PACIFCA KIDS!

What are we becoming?

These cold eyed acolytes of doctrine who would willingly sacrifice kids health to satisfy their redneck supporters bigotries should shame everyone of us!

Dumping the free health for everyone was cruel enough, doubling down and removing it from Māori and Pacifica kids ‘just cos that’s racist’ is the most intellectually bankrupt spite I have ever seen!

Every passing week the soullessness and petty hates of these right wing redneck crackers drains us collectively of joy, compassion and solidarity.

We are a pitiful and white fragility brittle people with all the cultural maturity of a can of day old coke.

What an embarrassing and shameful episode.

    • Bro can you afford a GP visit? Can a 14 year old kid without a job in Hawkes Bay afford a $75 GP visit?

One minute the right want targeted funding the next minute they want universalism for themselves.

Tax the rich more and Andrew can have free GP visits. Problem solved.

    • Because you sound as if you can afford to pay and already have easy access to GPs.
Their health needs may be greater than yours with you having had such easy access, as above, all your life.

They are not taking anything away from you by having free access to GPs. You can still roll up to a hospital and have free emergency care, operations and all sorts of therapy. They are not depriving you at all.
Any deprivation now at hospitals, may be caused by lack of backroom staff for admin. That’s not the fault of young Māori and Pacific people on the East Coast, is it?

If anything, those young people having some free health care now, before they deteriorate more, may save you money in the long run.
Looks to be another mean-spirited, penny-pinching tactic that will cost more money over the years and continue to drive a wedge between groups in our country.

    • Thomas Jefferson said “There is nothing more unequal than the equal treatment of unequal people.”
Going on what we have learned about you in the comments you make it is safe to say that you are in a much better position to provide for your health needs than many of the young people affected by this decision.

    • Andrew, if landlords can get government handouts why can’t every tenant?
If Chris Luxon can get a tax cut of $18,000 per year why can’t I?

    • Andrew, do you not realize deprivation leads to crime, lawlessness and eventually rebellion. Think that through before pulling your poor me the underprivileged might get something I don’t act.
Andrew do you not realize that giving these underprivileged kids excellent health care early means other people will be able to access care because these kids will not be taken to ED on Friday night clogging up the system along with the white privileged drunks and druggies who should know better and get free care from self inflicted damage. These are the ones who should not get free medical care.
These are the ones who should be told to go visit the GP or After hours clinics if they can find one . They are a scourge on society, not the 15 year old Maori girl who has a urinary tract infection and whose parents have been made redundant or have low paying menial jobs that you probably despise.

  1. Hang on. There is still a weighting to deprivation 5 which means that Māori who need help will get it. Admittedly middle and upper class Māori will not but they are not the ones with access issues.

  2. Does anyone else think it puzzling that the very people who claim concern over rising lawlessness and hostile alienated youth also wish to feed the very social deprivation that creates it?
(Please note I said ‘claim concern’. It might be that they do not actually give the north end of a south bound rodent about what happens to shopkeepers and bus drivers).

    • It’s a dead cat for the elections: would they ever get enough votes to win if they admitted they only want tax cuts for themselves and their businesses (and a chance to buy sweet public assets/ public services so they can make a cheap buck for their mates and themselves).

  3. The truth is that 99% of Maori have always paid the going rate for health care.
I never had free health care as an adult until I reached 65 and got the flu shot free and like every one else get the covid shots free.
White people actually take up 95% of the health care budget.
Because White pensioners out number brown pensioners 20 to 1 White pensioners actually are the gtreatest beneficieries of free health care. In fact the overwhelmed health system can be put down to the huge number of White pensioners. Something the White Right wing or the White media never talk about.
But then thats what white power and White media has done since the invasion in 1840.

    • Sorry but you are incorrect with that assumption .I have been retired 6 years and have had to pay every time I go to the doctor as have every other pensioner brown or white .In fact my fee has just gone up by 50%.

    • Yes, Koina they also make up the biggest number of NZ pensioners and probably get more home help and better access to ACC yet these facts are never mentioned oh no it those maaaaari.

  4. We will slash preventative health care for these young people but we will let Act spend 60k per year on some spoilt little prick to go to charter school because main stream state school is too hard .
Then in 40 years time you will be saying let them dye they should have gone to the doctor when they were younger .Maybe its actually a plan so that no brown people live past 65 so they will never have to pay them a pension .

  5. well have you ever thought what actually drives the difference in survival rates of brown and white people .Maybe ,just maybe its because there is greater deprivation in the services that brown people are delivered .My grand son was born with club feet and lives rurally .When he was born he was meant to be seen by an orthopedic person before he left hospital and was supposed to be receiving treatment the next week .No assesment took place and no treatment was offered untill his mum used her contacts as a nurse to raise the situation .When he finally got to his first treatment the person doing the treatment admitted he was bumped because he is brown and lives rurally as generally people from those situations dont get to follow up and are never informed that they can get treatment .

  6. What these so called genius right wing governments never understand is preventative medicine. If these young people are encouraged to seek medical help for free early on we all benefit. Slashing money for health will not work, money should be poured in to ensure we at least get the right resources in place Cutting hospital staff never works to benefit the sick, the sick get sicker costing more money in the long run . Wake up Aotearoa we don’t need tax cuts we need health services that benefit us all . Say no to health cuts because you or a member of your family could be next to suffer unnecessarily at the behest of this awful PM and government.

  7. I see National are still talking with a forked tongue, Reti announced their health target plan; to expand the number of beds and operating theatres in public hospitals and make greater use of capacity in private hospitals, what is the point of increasing beds and theatres when there is not enough doctors or nurses to man them due to their budget constraints, lie number one. And his list goes on with more lies, now what are we paying our taxes for? More people are going to die unnecessary under this bullshitting lying uncaring lot of wankers.

  9. Yes, Koina they (pakeha) also make up the biggest number of NZ pensioners and probably get more home help and better access to ACC yet these facts are never mentioned oh no its those maaaaari.

When I went to visit my 49-year-old brother in the Hutt hospital orthopedic ward it was full off elderly pakeha. Who is really sucking up the majority of health dollars? and what about elderly care homes this will be costing our country a small fortune.
