Wow.
Just. Wow.
Children’s Minister says Oranga Tamariki was ‘cash cow’, angers PSA
Key points
-
- Oranga Tamariki, the Ministry for Children, announced earlier this year that 447 jobs would be cut under a proposed restructure
- Minister for Children Karen Chhour today says Oranga Tamariki has been a “cash cow” for community service providers for years
- The Public Service Association says the Minister’s response disrespects front-line community workers and social workers.
Wow.
So.
The Minister believes Community Groups who are enacting the actual social policy the ministry doesn’t have the trust of are doing it for the cash?
Is that her actual way of thinking about those Community Groups?
The way a cynical Libertarian would?
This feels like a real slip of the mask here from the Minister.
Doing what a Karen does, she has weaponised her tears and sold her political back story of abuse at the hands of the State into a tale of being bullied to deflect from the very damaging policy she is enacting.
Hearing her claim Oranga Tamariki has been a cash cow to the Community Groups doing the actual mahi is a statement of value.
And that value sees dollars, not children.
Her statement is outrageous and undermines her back story be revealing a psychology that values welfare with the same disgust of Milton Friedman.
Put aside the child abused by the State and see the Wide Eyed Free Market Acolyte.
You can be wrong about something two ways.
The first is by being too far away from it to have any insight.
The second is to be too close to something to have any oversight.
Karen has used her back story, and it is one that should be respected, but as we see the way she actually values these things, can’t it be argued that she is too close to something to appropriately manage it?
She’s coming across like a very stressed out person attempting to implement deeply counter productive policy that only values a brutal cost effective mindset totally inappropriate for the vulnerable people she is overseeing.

Only one cow here and she is sucking up as much cash as she can for her doners .After all if you destroy the used and abused that leaves more cash for the 10%
I’m sure that I’m not the only one who thinks she should look in the mirror if she wants to see a cash cow.
brilliant, Bonnie.
ACT members judge the actions of others by what they themselves do.
For example; my last employer is a member of that party. His firm was saved from bankruptcy by securing government contracts.
This happened several years ago and continues to this day. He lives comfortably on an income from New Zealand taxpayers and continues to deplore the ‘excessively high levels of government spending’ which must be reduced for everyone except him ( I suppose it is like being an ACT member of Parliament).
I told him he was a hypocrite but, unfortunately, he did not know what the word meant and ignored it( along with integrity, conscience, humanity, responsibility).
Gore Vidal said it best;
Right wingers believe in; ” Socialism for the rich, capitalism for the poor’.
At the moment she is coming across like a smart arse, unfortunately her little tantrum worked and all her answers in parliament are listened to in silence no matter what she says. How will they square their answers with Mike King and his millions. Isn’t it natural that charities will have unused money, don’t they have to budget like anyone else or are they expected to spend the money as soon as they get it. Don’t they have to budget for wages ,spike in referrals etc.etc. So she is leaving these proven charities who prevent children going into care broke and out of work. In the long run her trumpeting saving money will lead to long term harm. More children in state care, more children losing their cultural heritage and more children at risk of abuse and the loss of valuable expertise and experience. She is absolutely the worst and her money saving will definitely harm more children
This Minister is well out of her depth and ability–just being used by Incel Dave and the Act bois basically.
She is going to crash and burn soon enough if she is naive enough to expect well informed Māori and Institutions to appreciate what she and her CoC Govt is doing.
Karen Chhour was labelled a Puppet for Seymour’s dirty work. SHE IS NO PUPPET, SHE LOVES WHAT SHE IS DOING. The end of her interview with Tova O’Brien she quipped, “That was fun”, not realising the mike was still on. She refers to Orange Tamariki as a CASH COW. SHE’S THE COW and we are paying her carry out her evilness.
Next it would be good to forensically account for the hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars evaporated to improve racial covid vaccination rates.
Nah we have to have forensic tests on why ministers have had a pay rise when clearly they are under performing.
All politicians pay, of all parties is determined by an independent panel. Are you touching yourself again squeaky?
We’ve talked about this.
But like the very brilliant Ardern, Lex Luther could have chosen to freeze their remuneration given the current economic climate and the amount of public servants they have axed.
Now take your hand off it otherwise both your hands will have blisters, we’ve talked about this.
She is looking at that boot and wondering if it will fit up Davids arse
That boot is exactly what typifies the COC. Something to kick you with and put on your throat while you are down.
Chour is probably thinking, “come on baby give it to me”.
dick head he has never been in prison as you may well have .He maybe a right wing bible basher though
Well done Mr Bradbury, your post achieved your likely objective of inflaming the more closed-minded and foul-mouthed of your motley crew of followers, so that they might fire their vitriol into the darkness in a way that they take strong exception to when its leftie politicians being attacked. I have no doubt you intended that to happen.
Oh Graeme you rightard, lighten up. Whatever his intention, what he did was elicit a right wing response from you, for that Martyn is the winner. I have no doubt he intended that to happen and you fell for it hook line and sinker.
G What a poison-pen you contrive. Keep your talk of vitriol for your own personal use. So negative and nasty. Poor sick man you are.
Correction, Epuni, just, eh we around the corner Naenae
A couple of thoughts. Firstly a disclaimer: I’m related with one degree of separation to a VOYCE-like candidate abused in state care, as were 3 of his siblings – one after the other after the other.
Karen, to put it bluntly, ISN’T the sharpest knife in the drawer (OIKuew-woise). Unfortunately she is possessed of an ego that isn’t moderated in any way with the concept of what some humans possess – things that allow them to operate as a community. (HUMILITY – there is none)
Happenstance has got her where she is today.
PLEASE DON’T EXPECT ME TO FEEL any SYMPATHY (she’d characterise that as EMPATHY) for such an ERGLY (and I don’t just mean aesthetically) cow if anything befalls it.
A victim she is snot. She is one ugly specimen with limited ideologically-driven IQ that is about to deliver harm to a large proportion of the population.
Fuck her/it, and everything that dares to sail it it or evn near IT.
Ew. Seriously EW
And @Martyn – sure!!!!!!!!! you go empathise for the @Karen for what it has been through. (I do as well).
She’s not completely stupid though, and she’s prepared to allow her own ambition (and partly bullshit) experieince to “know best”
Again: Fuck her/it, and everuthing that sails in it
NZ/AO should be making space for Maori in ways that twill advantage them for a better future with their talents, apart from increasing use of te reo. That has a touch of *providing a pillow for a dying race to me. Instead the direction is dissing and hurting Maori mana and the culture which is a real defining and happy main part of all that is notable and enjoyable about the country and in its world image.
Look at the Patea Maori Club – such fun and uniquely Kiwi. We should be promoting that attitude that produced this video not just amongst Maori but stuck-up wealthy and also generally ordinary pakeha. Not be trying to squash Maori flat like cardboard cutouts of whatever the PTB have in mind of what ‘is appropriate’.
Of course that presumes, one they have a mind, and two they have any positive ideas in it about our New Zealand/Aotearoa country and three that they still know what a country is and particularly what NZ/AO is or still remains, despite devastating attempts to wipe it of identifying characteristics.
