Why is National lying dangerously about Labour’s AUKUS position…
Document Dump Still Doesn’t Make The Case For AUKUS – Labour
The Government continues its pretence that its promotion of Aukus Pillar 2 is what Labour did previously, which is just not correct, released papers show.
The document release today coincides with warnings by Australian defence expert Hugh White, who said escalating strategic rivalry carries a serious risk of escalating to a nuclear conflict.
The Government has failed to make a case for joining AUKUS Pillar 2 and Labour remains unconvinced that joining is in New Zealand’s interests.
“The Government’s document dump is a shallow attempt to say “Labour started this” but it doesn’t cut the mustard,” says Labour’s foreign affairs spokesperson David Parker.
“The Government has been so stung by the opposition from left and right to its desire to sign up to AUKUS Pillar 2, it has resorted to releasing old briefing papers to try and argue it was simply continuing Labour policy.
“But the record shows Labour leader Chris Hipkins said his preference was for some other arrangement going into the 2023 election.
“Since the National Government took office there has been a significant change in attitude, with Ministers talking up New Zealand joining Pillar 2 of AUKUS.
In briefings for the Australia-NZ ministerial meeting after the election it was revealed officials were “actively looking for ways in which to participate in Pillar 2, particularly in those areas where New Zealand can make a material contribution.”
Prior to attending the ANZMIN dialogue in Melbourne in late January 2024, Defence Minister Judith Collins said, “We are interested in being involved in Pillar 2. It’s not a secret.”
During a trip to Washington in April, Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters released a joint statement with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken which stated that, “We share the view that arrangements such as the Quad, AUKUS, and the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity contribute to peace, security, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific and see powerful reasons for New Zealand engaging practically with them, as and when all parties deem it appropriate.”
“Christopher Luxon recently positioned New Zealand as acting an extension of the USA military ambitions in the South China sea, saying it was critical that New Zealand be a “force multiplier for Australia and the US and other partners.”
“Labour continues to be unconvinced joining AUKUS offers New Zealand significant benefits, and that the Government has yet to explain the rationale for joining a security pact designed to militarily contain China, our biggest trading partner,” said David Parker.
“Does the National led government see China as a military threat to New Zealand? And if they see US-China superpower rivalry as a threat to peace and security, why do they think backing the United States in its competitive struggle against China is a good way to avoid war or protect New Zealand’s national interests?
“These questions need to be answered before any moves are made to significantly re-align New Zealand’s foreign policy,” said David Parker.
…are we getting softened up for something here?
Has Luxon made a decision about getting into America’s next military adventure has he?
Look, we can not pretend we are in a. benign geopolitical environment any longer and I argue we need to lift our spending on the military to 3% because we need to be independent and being independent requires us to have the capacity to defend ourselves and help project force for climate storms responses.
We should look at Pillar 3, where there is no role with the nuclear submarine program and instead gives us the tech capacity to build our own drone capacity.
Drones are clearly the military future and using them to patrol our Economic Zone is an essential.
We need a defence force that can actually protect our interests without simply becoming a new arm of the American Military Industrial Complex.
We should care less about military interoperation with America and Australia and more about what we need to build and maintain our own drone force to protect our own country.
We need Pillar 3 that boosts that technology and manufacturing capacity to allow us an Independent Foreign Policy.
We should not get sucked into America’s next military adventure…
Warnings of ‘catastrophic conflict’ by Australian Aukus sceptic Hugh White
A leading Australian defence expert and Aukus sceptic, Professor Hugh White, believes that any defence technology sharing involving New Zealand would be best done outside the auspices of Aukus.
He says separating defence co-operation from Aukus – a deal to supply Australia with nuclear-powered submarines – would avoid New Zealand’s getting entangled with the weight of symbolism that Aukus carried as a counter to the rise of China.
He believes the escalating strategic rivalry between the United States and Chinacarries a serious risk of a catastrophic conflict that could easily become a nuclear conflict.
“So I think what we want is the United States to adopt an approach in Asia which aims to maximise its ongoing influence in the region but avoids escalating strategic rivalry with China,” he said in an interview with the Herald.
Almost necessarily that meant doing a deal with China and conceding quite a lot to China.
…we don’t want to be owned by Beijing OR Washington.
Has Christopher Luxon sold our independent foreign policy to the American Military Industrial Complex for 3 magic beans?

Of cause National are lying as they know nothing else .Hence Chippy allowed the research papers to be released .No where did it say that the last government was going to jump on the band wagon in the maner these blood thirsty pricks are .

Successful democracies are a threat to the CCP. and ‘struggle’ is a virtue to them. So the PRC will never get along with the US (long term). They won’t stop until all democracies are dead.
So why is China our biggest export customer then? About the kindest thing I can say to you is to wipe your chin. You obviously have a view on how the world works although it is only based on your twisted imagination and not worth anything.
We shouldn’t be in Aukus!!!!
If we have to be in alliances they should be primarily economic and recognize that we cannot afford to be a military power let alone pretend to be able to defend ourselves
Nats and Winston obviously feel the need to blame Labour for starting this process which is par for the course when you are doing something you don’t really want to do. They are obviously either being pressured into going down this path or are hell bent on sucking up to America, Australia and Britain.
They could stop the discussion any time they wish, after all they have stopped most of anything Labour started and some that Winston had a hand in from 2017 to 2020.
They lie on a reasonably regular basis so it’s not a surprise. The surprise is that they say they are following Labours course of action. That’s completely out of character and therefore another likely lie.
