The false equivalence of comparing Left Wing Political violence to Right Wing Political violence

"So this is how democracy dies, with thunderous applause, Hulk Hogan and Kid Rock"

The attempt by the Right to claim this assassination attempt has been generated by the Left who have rightfully pointed out Trump’s Orange fascism is ridiculous when you consider their hyper-partisan calls for violence…

…the Right have whipped up the hysteria, the Left are righteous in pointing out how extreme Trump’s second term will be and this kid who shot him is just another lost boy amongst an ocean of bullying and sub machine guns.

The reality is the vast amount of political violence in America is created by Republicans…

After Trump shooting, Republicans seek to pin political violence trend on Democrats

Within hours of the assassination attempt on former U.S. President Donald Trump, many of his supporters began laying blame on Democrats, seeking to flip the script on who has stoked America’s heated political rhetoric as cases of political violence reach historic heights.
From establishment Republicans to far-right conspiracy theorists, a consistent message emerged that President Joe Biden and other Democratic leaders laid the groundwork for Saturday’s shooting by casting Trump as an autocrat who poses a grave threat to democracy.
A Reuters analysis of more than 200 incidents of politically motivated violence between 2021 and 2023, however, presented a different picture: In those years, fatal political violence more often emanated from the American right than from the left.
The U.S. is embroiled in the most sustained spate of political violence since a decade of upheaval that began in the late 1960s, Reuters found in that report published last year. That violence has come from across the ideological spectrum, and includes extensive attacks on property during left-wing political demonstrations. But attacks on people — from beatings to killings — were perpetrated mostly by suspects acting in service of right-wing political beliefs and ideology.

…the truth is that it is the Right who have weaponised words and hate while pretending their are the moral and ethical ones…

After Trump lost the 2020 election, Reuters documented hundreds of threats to local election officials by Trump supporters enraged by his false claims that the election was rigged. A Reuters investigation published in May found that violent threats against judges handling Trump’s various criminal and civil trials spiked after the former president criticized those judges in speeches or social-media posts.
Before the shooting, Trump had not ruled out the possibility of political violence if he loses November’s election. “If we don’t win, you know, it depends,” he said when asked by TIME magazine in April if he expected violence after the 2024 election. He’s also refused to unconditionally accept the results of the upcoming election and warned of a “bloodbath” if he loses.
A Reuters review of dozens of Trump’s campaign speeches – particularly those from 2020 and 2024 – found that violence was a recurring theme. He has exhorted rallygoers “to take back our country,” repeatedly praised the Jan. 6 Capitol rioters and compared himself to famed mobster Al Capone. While president, he encouraged police to be rough with people they were arresting and threatened to use the U.S. military to quell protests.

…The Political Right are now selling this as a miracle, Trump’s narcissism can only evolve to disciple of God level and we will see an unhinged Trump implementing mass deportations, Project 2025 (which will turn 2 million public servants into a private bureaucratic army for Trump) and all the moderate bits from the Handmaids’ Tale as basic social policy.

If Trump is elected, we are witnessing the American Midnight where a fundamentalist white Christian Nationalism is about to violently erupt.

Trump will win and he will be an orange god of vengeance.

  1. How many died in protests over George Floyd, again?

Anyway, this is all irrelevant. There is no organized left wing in the US, and the US is a force for evil that has been responsible for millions of murders across the world in the 21st century alone. There is no reason for any human being to care what happens in the headquarters of the american empire, apart from funding political groups whether ‘left’ or ‘right’ which seek to overthrow it.

  2. An American president is rich old fart, who owes his position to rich campaign donors. Essentially one finger to Joe public who can choose between bad or worse, depending on which side of the political spectrum they fall.

  3. Neither side in this debate can claim any moral high ground when it comes to inciting violence against the other. There is plenty of evidence with just a cursory glance at the internet. To claim otherwise is disingenuous.

    • You are correct, either side claiming a moral high ground is silly to show that it would require people leaving their echo chambers.

I wonder if Simon Wilson ever found the evidence for his “75% of political violence is from the right” claim that he made on the last working group – and that he then couldn’t back up at the time. I’m sure as a trusted journalist he’ll have a solid source for it.

      Or not.

      • Does it depend on what is considered right wing these days?
Some seem to insist anyone with views slightly more moderate than Pol Pot is a Fascist Hitler Nazi.

        • I woke up one day and discovered I was “right wing”. I don’t remember it happening but someone reliably informed me that I was, and who I am to argue with the (apparent) intelligensia.

So yes maybe Simon was right, and in fact his number may even have been a little low.

  4. “After Trump lost the 2020 election, Reuters documented hundreds of threats to local election officials by Trump supporters enraged by his false claims that the election was rigged”
People will continue to believe such claims until we replace the travesty of democracy that applies through the secret ballot with genuine democracy based on the open ballot.
If either camp – Republicans or Democrats, Trump or Biden – were sincere about affirming that the election was rigged or was not rigged then they would be calling for the open ballot right now. The reason why they are not doing that is that they both want to be able to either rig future elections, or to falsely but plausibly claim that elections have been rigged. Consequently democracy in the US, as in the Realm of New Zealand, has become a farce. That needs to change.

  5. The change in tone from US government and media after the shooting was instant, went from ‘Trump is the devil’ to ‘Let’s calm it down’. Hilarious self-preservation. And this protection squad shit show. New Zealand wants a romantic chaperone from AUKUS Pillar 2 (non sloped) when the US can’t even protect it’s own leadership? What next, saying the massacre of 30,000 kids is self-defense?

  6. There is no left in USA… organized labour ie some of the Unions, were on stage endorsing Trump at RNC.
