Winston Peters on the offensive over Covid-19 inquiry
New Zealand First leader Winston Peters has responded to questions about his approach to the Covid-19 inquiry with verbal attacks on the commissioners, academics and the media.
The coalition government on Tuesday revealed plans for a second phase of the Royal Commission of Inquiry which would look into additional matters including vaccine efficacy, lockdowns in Auckland and Northland, and disruption to health, education and businesses.
Peters then announced that while he agreed with the need for the second phase, NZ First would agree to disagree with its coalition partners over the decision to allow the initial inquiry to complete its work with the same commissioners.

Peters the following day responded to questions about that by lashing out at the media.
“No, those were your allegations at the time. Your mainstream media and RNZ accused us of going down a rabbit hole, the kind of arrogant behaviour which does not belong in a first-world country that understands science and more importantly is one of the world’s great longest-lasting democracies. That’s what’s happening here and you’re repeating it,” he said.

Also appearing on Morning Report, Hipkins repeated his claim, pointing to NZ First’s coalition commitment to “end all Covid-19 vaccine mandates still in operation” – a tricky ask considering these were abolished in April 2022.
That was long before NZ First’s manifesto for the October 2023 election was unveiled, just eight days before election day and 10 days after voting had started.
…the danger for NZ Politics right now is that Winston is so dependent on the anti vaxx Cooker Conspiracy electorate to keep NZF above 5% that he has to keep feeding them raw meat to hold their vote.

In fact, they should also be looking into the delay of RATs and why they weren’t utilised in the workplace and throughout society sooner. Further, what impact that failure had on the body count.

The notion that any political commision of inquiry, no matter who conducts it, is better qualified to gainsay the global scientific and medical community, its review systems and resultant consensus shows how far the hard fought for gains for Reason, made by the Enlightenment, are currently being destrored.
Surely, the goal here is to establish the facts and not deny or contradict them.
Further, I expect the scientific and medical community will speak up if there is any such attempt to gainsay.
Don’t be stupid, any commission hasn’t anywhere near the expertise of the global scientific community.
They can evaluate public health response and policy but not vaccine efficacy. What are they going to do? conduct their own trials? Have a lawyer or retired judge or an MP to do meta studies and review decades of RNA, chemical, vaccine and viral research?
There are already organisations and systems set up to do these studies and reviews. It’s the reason for existence. They have already reviewed and reported the current understanding of the evidence and science, they do it in real time, and the NZ health systems use and consult these sources constantly, and have done so for a century or longer. They did so right through the pandemic.

They will be drawing on the expertise of the global scientific community to determine if it aligns with the actions taken and statements and made.
For example, Jacinda made some wild claims re vaccine efficacy. Thus, they will be looking to see if these sort of statements made stacked up with the science at the time.
And this is important to clear up.

Vaccine efficacy. As you concede, the efficacy has been and is determined by the scientific and medical community. As it should be and it doesn’t need to be done again, particularly by those with no expertise. that is worth repeating, rhere is no point in doing it again.
If you want to examine Ardern’s cabinet decision-making process, or on whether the Ministry of Health ignored its statutory duty to consult and report on the current state of data, or on how the ministry recommends strategies in light of the data – that is a different proposition. It is not determination of vaccine efficacy.
The people represented by Peters, wouldn’t know a scientific fact if it bit them in the backside. They have made up their minds on efficacy. All this rubbish about loads of deaths even though they never seem to know anyone. They make shit up like that vile b arch Sue Grey did.

Never mind that the global scientific community has spent many decades and countless sums of money on collecting the data, studying the results, in discussion and drawing conclusions, questioning reviewing the conclusions and data over and over again.
