The Government is making it easier for Kāinga Ora tenants to be evicted if they exhibit “persistent antisocial behaviour” and wants to crack down on the level of debt owed by tenants.
The move comes as figures show state house tenants’ debt has increased from $1 million to $21m between 2017 and 2023 and more than 450 Kāinga Ora tenants each owed more than $10,000 in rent at the end of last year.
This is a Party that previously misused Housing NZs own data to claim state tenant were making meth and kicked entire families out onto the street.
It was so appalling that the Science God had to step in and kick the filthy National Party and Paula Bennett in the face over the issue…
Meth house contamination debunked by PM’s science advisor
The country’s top scientists say New Zealand has been gripped by hysteria and are recommending people do not test their homes for meth – unless the Police specifically indicate it was a meth lab.
A new report by the Prime Minister’s chief science adviser Sir Peter Gluckman found there’s never been a documented case of someone getting sick from third-hand exposure to meth.
Sir Peter said there has been an inexplicable leap in logic in New Zealand in which clean-up standards for meth labs jumped to become a measure for passive exposure.
“There’s absolutely no evidence in the medical literature anywhere in the world, of anybody being harmed by passive exposure to methamphetamine at any level,” Sir Peter said.
“We can’t find one case in the medical literature, we can’t find one case by talking to experts where there is evidence of harm … it makes no sense.”
…all National’s ridiculous meth testing scam did was needlessly cost us $100 million and create homelessness during a homelessness crisis!
National are going to do the same thing with this new crack down on State Tenants.
There are 2 issues here:
1 – What do you do with difficult tenants with extreme social problems
2 – Lending the poor money to pay rent and then stopping that while demanding repayment of the debt.
The problem with the first issue is that redneck Kiwis don’t give a fuck.
With so much pain in peoples existence they have no patience or energy for those with severe mental issues or anti-social behaviour and Pakeha get sexually aroused hating unruly Kāinga Ora tenants. All this policy will do is generate more homelessness as National kick Kāinga Ora tenants out onto then street with no help whatsoever.
On top of this the Government will kick Tenants out who are borrowing money to stay in the State House!
These are the poorest people, borrowing money from the State to pay their rent and these numbers have spiked because of the economic turn down and cost of living crisis, so National will kick these people out onto the street ALONGSIDE THEIR DEBT!
So this policy will not only create more damaged homeless people with severe behavioural issues AND they will be made homeless alongside being inn crippling debt they can’;t pay back?
This isn’t a social fucking housing policy, it’s a recipe for social carnage in the communities of the homeless!
Remember, this Government can afford $2.9billion in tax breaks for the richest landlords while kicking state tenants onto the street for not being able to afford their rents while the PM was taking a $52000 housing allowance! he didn’t need!

Nothing sums up where we are as a people and a country right now quite like the manner in which Christ Bishop rewarded his staff for these 100 days of social carnage.
After slashing budgets and taking from the poor to give to the rich, Chris Bishop rewarded his staff with Crayfish…

…Crayfish for them.
Austerity for the rest of us.
$2.9billion for landlord tax breaks.
Debt and homelessness for State Tenants.
This Government loves bashing the people their right wing voters despise.
This isn’t social policy, it’s a revenge fantasy.

This all looks like a prelude to selling off more state homes.
already under way .2 listed in TA last week and a couple in TK AS WELL .
The Wall Street sharks are coming for state housing. Vonovia, Cerberus, Fortress, Deutsche Annington and others want to add more slums to their portfolio, and their international lobbying dollars are always flowing to the politicians.
The reason the 1990’s were considered such a victory for the real estate developers is that new home construction actually fell after the mass privatisations swept across Europe. The real estate boards first started lobbying against public housing in the 1930’s, in order to defend artificial price manipulation (via land banking and slumlording). Ever since they have demanded that governments hand out voucher subsidies and tax breaks to large private landlords.
We should also consider how backward the new (non-state) housing stock, i.e. from local private developers, already is. The volume builders are churning out cheap, overpriced garbage: floor plans with pre-1930’s levels of floorspace, the very worst of 1940’s siding and roof cladding (fibro and tin!), and outrageously ugly architecture. Such houses were already considered unsaleable as early as the 1970’s; by then the median standard for single-detached homes was either split level or double storey, with brick veneer siding, tile roofing and central heating.
The earthquake stopped most of the desire for tile roofing in Christchurch. You are correct in that they mostly build cheap houses but they still want big money for them.
I wonder how many people are going to be kicked out for false or vexatious allegations…indeed for some people even talking loud can be classed as ‘anti social’.
All fixed by Laxative Luxon this morning !
He said he hoped that in families where the adults were being disruptive, there were “other agencies involved in looking after those children”.
” HOPED ” ???
Or assumes that all Kainga Ora kids have bad parents therefore OT has their hand in ?
Or the RW State will leach of charity as the safety net again ?
Ah well , the traumatised kids can phone up ” gumboot friday ” for the max of two free counselling sessions and the State can send truancy officers out to chase down the itinerant kids .
No one will be kicked out. They will be moved to another kainga Ora house in a different suburb. & Be given the support services they need.
Moved on to another Kainga Ora house that is what we did with our pedophile (mainly priest) we moved them to another area and school to carry on. Moving a problem does not fix it nor does it acknowledge the wider and deeper issues at play here and that is some people need a lot of help.
Yeah you only hear about priests in nz media never hear about the other religions .it would make your toes curl at what my cousin went thru and 63 other girls. But it kept hush hush
Yes, colonization is all part of society’s problems particularly relating to inequities.
Brave Bish!
He writes, from the safety of his Beehive office, to KO ordering them to adhere to his policy of turfing out ‘irresponsible’ tenants.
No thought given to the KO staffer doing a job they were never trained to do. They will be scared out of their wits before they even go to the offending family.
Very quickly they will call on the underpaid, under-resourced and equally stressed local police to do the job.
It will inevitably all turn to custard because the policy was fraught with difficulty and clearly all consequences not thought through – like many of this coalition’s rushed policy.
TDB got it right – ‘the reality is’: the clowns really are running the place!
Just give the houses to the Salvation Army and Iwi providers to run. Quite obviously the government us not up to the job, let alone providing damaged individuals with additional care. As for the threat of homelessness? Well sorry, but if you need three warnings to stop terrorising your neighbours then a law abiding community is probably not the right place for you. Maybe a tent city in the middle of nowhere might not be the worst idea after all.
Not forgetting the landlords receive $1.5 BILLION +in Accomodation supplements…..some ‘free’ market.
There was a time in this country when we were a community that prided itself on its equitable attitude to others. The vast majority of comments here show that even among lefties, this has gone. Everyone of you who spewed vitriol against the poorest in our society disgust me, and you certainly don’t deserve to be called left wing, because you bloody well aren’t!!!
NZ used to give the Scandinavian countries a run for their money as the best and fairest place to live with the highest score in happiness. It was based on a very low wealth/income gap and a home for everyone. State housing was at the core of this. Rent was pegged at 25% of gross income, and that set the standard for private rentals. Everyone’s wage/salary was published when Awards were published, along with the various salary scales. Consequently, envy and greed were minimised.
The 2nd ACT government under Bolger, did away with the HCNZ mortgages/1st home loans, leaving the State housing sector at the mercy of government expenditure and market rents.
Until we get a government that’s prepared to enforce by entrenched law, a 25% of gross income as the maximum chargeable for rent, under penalty of property confiscation, nothing will change. Until we get a government that’s prepared to enforce published wage and salary scales, and enforce a one to seven ratio between the lowest and highest, nothing will change.
Those two are the basic issues that underpin every other left wing agenda. Ignore them, and the left loses, both its support and any chance at government.
100%, Richard.
what about private “ferals”? why doesn’t the state tell private landlords what to do? I should complain to crayfish bishop about the 16 uber drivers next door coming and going at all hours and stinking up the place, getting drunk and playing loud music. Can he please tell their landlord to evict them as they are “unruly tenants”.
So where do they live once evicted, I note no suggestion by you Mathew?
Is anyone going to show some compassion for the state house tenants who have been terrorised by these ferals? Or don’t they count?
