We have told ourselves that Putin blundered in the Ukraine.
I hope that is true.
My fear is the grand Chess master has forced an unwilling military into a war as the start of a new era of disorder and proxy war conflict that is being fed by Russia in Africa, the Balkans and now I suspect, the Middle East.
In this new regional chaos, Putin can assert power while undermining the agreed rules of order.
Russia doesn’t rise, everyone else sinks.
The new geopolitical normalisation diplomatic process between Israel and other Muslim nations has ostracised Palestinian aspirations that have been permanently stalled and this grievance has been fed I think by Iranian interests and Russian interests.
It is in Russia’s interest for a new conflict to erupt in the Middle East to divert attention from Ukraine and the possibility of this spinning out of control is high.
Without a Speaker, the US response remains rudderless.
The rage Israel feels at the barbarism of Hamas will provoke them into committing a terrible revenge that will only enflame issues even further.
China could consider this moment as their chance to flex.
If the response by Israel kills an enormous number of Palestinian Civilians as they wage war on Hamas in Gaza, it will only spark another wave of atrocity, which will in turn spark more atrocity, which will spark more atrocity, which will spark even more.
Each new obscenity slightly more sickening than the previous.
It will be a wound mutilating a wound.
Immediate peace talks are our only hope.
That hope is meaningless against an ocean of outrage, pain, fear and anger.
Terrible acts are about to be committed.

The Israeli military and state have themselves become the butchers of Auschwitz, and have long run Gaza like WWII Warsaw Ghetto. It is understandable that they want revenge after being on the receiving end of unconscionable violence for once–but the world community has to step up now and intervene to save hundreds of thousands of children at least in Gaza.
I have never supported Hamas–their religious zealotry rivals the Zionists themselves, their resistance obviously should have been directed at military and Israeli State targets not civilians. Not a big fan of Israeli civilians either however, still remember the video of settlers in arm chairs on a ridge cheering on another bombing of Gaza a few years back. And the Israeli forces regularly attack civilians themselves in mosques, settlements and shoot kids and teenagers, torture and imprison with gay abandon for the crime of being Palestinian.
The whole scenario was set up by inter imperialist machinations, the Balfour Declaration etc. and continues now. US interests being primary, Mid East State interests and so on. Ordinary people in Arab states often support the Palestinians but their authoritarian Governments waffle and manipulate. Speak out on your social media, send a message to Parliamentarians, support BDS, do what you can.
Please shelve the adolescent fantasies about “evil” Russia and stick to things you have a clue about.
Support for Israel has shifted into the ultra right where as support for war in Ukraine shifted into the ultra left-wing. That means something for kiwis it means any government in waiting are setting New Zealand up for disaster. Never the less we have to be honest about Israel using the holocaust as an excuse to kill Palestinians and steal their lands. Both Israel and the U.S makes it clear there will be no negotiated peace settlement. Ruasians understand this, Palestinians understand it. You do not understand this. This official Western democratic stand is to fight to weaken Palestine and Russia, that you fo not understand.
