Mayor Wayne Brown says campaign promises from National will leave Auckland worse off
Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown says campaign promises from the National Party would leave Auckland worse off.
On Tuesday morning, Brown let the Nats know he wants to take back control.
“Right at the moment, we’ve got an election where one of the likely inbound Governments has made some statements which is only going to make this worse actually,” Brown said.
He’s talking about National’s plan to scrap the regional fuel tax (RFT).
“Labour said Auckland needed the Auckland fuel tax to deliver light rail, that was back in 2017, they haven’t delivered on their major infrastructure projects while Aucklanders continue to pay more at the pump,” National’s transport spokesperson Simeon Brown said.
Mayor Brown claims there’s a problem with that because revenue from the RFT is committed to a $1.4 billion Auckland infrastructure project – the Eastern Busway – which will carry 30,000 people a day between Auckland’s southeast and Panmure station.
The section between Panmure and Pakuranga is finished, Pakuranga to Botany is next. It’ll also have 12km of separated cycle lanes.
“You make a statement: ‘oh, we’re going to get rid of the fuel tax’. Well, hang on, it is doing something. There was a statement it hasn’t been spend, it is committed,” the Mayor said.
Fellow Aucklanders, when Wayne Brown is telling you that National’s Policies will rob and cost Auckland, you should listen!
It’s easy to call off a petrol tax, but what happens to all the things that revenue pays for?
National are making promises without costing any of them out!
National want more privatisation of roads and less public transport funding and Wayne Brown, YOUR BOOMER KING YOU BOOMER AUCKLANDERS is telling you National will screw us!
There are so many reasons not to vote for National, this is just another one!

Wayne Brown is no fool, when it comes to number crunching.
Talking about number crunching, currently 8,000 tons of raw sewerage is pouring into the Waitemata Harbour every day from the giant collapsed Auckland main sewer.
From North Harbour to Takapuna, from Mission Bay to St. Heliers, Auckland beaches are being coated with shit. Not to mention the fishing ban. Looking for a relaxing day on Auckland beaches and harbour this summer? forget it.
And Christopher Luxon wants to cut Auckland infrastructure funding?
This is no small pipe. For comparison you could fit a car inside it. This is the main sewer that drains all the toilets of West Auckland and the CBD. it is going to take a lot of funding to fix it. The job may take months.
Like many disasters there are a number of factors that have led up to this collapse, but most often mentioned is the extraordinary record breaking rain that seeped into the ground and washed out the subsoils, creating a massive sink hole that collapsed the sewer.
This record breaking rain has been linked to climate change.
As well as raising funds for regional infrastructure, the introduction of the regional fuel tax, was tied to a public transport subsidy, the purpose was to disincentivise people from using their private cars, and incentivise people to use public transport. To wait for it lessen Auckland’s climate change impact.
In effect;
Christopher Luxon wanting to cut the funding that will be needed to harden regional infrastructure against the effects of cllmate change, Christopher Luxon is also wanting to increase the causes of climate change.
The National ACT NZF coalition government, will be a coalition of chaos in more than one sense.
Advocating for more tax? The trouble is for Wayne, fucking over Aucklands motorists with yet another tax hasn’t done a damned thing for them.
His council have propped up speed hump contractors with outrageously expensive bills with the proliferation of judder bars and that is about the sum total of the fuel tax, which I note he avoids reference too like the Mammoth in the room. Half our trains are out of service, the ferry system is a bad joke and the buses are still running below pre covid levels, so where the hell is the justification for your taxes Wayne?
And in a cost of living crisis that always hurts the least well off the most, the relief of the fuel tax will be welcomed. The only difference we will see is Auckland Council have less to waste! Even National see that!
X Ray I think the speed hump mania, speed limits and orange road cone mania are all concoctions of an out of control AT b4 Wayne Brown’s tenure.
Acknowledged Ngungukai, but he knows this is where fuel tax money is pouring into and he ain’t saying he’s going to turn that tap off either!
The chances of the energy companies passing the fuel price reduction onto consumers is about the same as supermarkets passing on GST savings to shoppers.
Even the worst can be correct occasionally. Browny’s physcology is developer and engineer based which probably puts him on some bizarre spectrum somewhere. So empathy and social issues are not major elements of his thought processes.
Have known him for 30 years in the Far North and he is a predator, selfish with little care for how working class people are doing. When FNDC Mayor he sold off the Mangonui waterfront pensioner flats because it incensed him that ordinary people had harbour views at a reasonable rent, he managed to shift the rating burden from Commercial/Farming to Residential–what a genius. He refurbished the local Mangonui 4 Square which sits out over the water, and houses his personal apartment. He refused to provide disabled access, and moved the car parks out toward the road which has created a hazard for all road users. The cut off original bolts that retained the original sleeper barrier are still visible.
It is a yeah, nah from me on anything Brown.
Thanks for the detail TM. I knew that Brown was not a goodf colour but has forgotten just how he came by the shade.
However on the spectrum colour wheel he might move to a better hue if there is some ageing brain shift, can only hope. We must cling onto hope to keep fighting and thinking – even if we have painted ourselves into a corner. With IT we can just press delete and start off again, or perhaps not – what then?
Correction: 800 tonnes of raw sewerage is pouring into Auckland Harbour every day, still a lot of shit. My apologies of the typo.
Yes, 8,000 tonnes did seem rather alarming. Where is the location of the discharge?

Instead of removing the fuel tax, we need to increase the fuel tax and tie it to making public transport free across the Auckland region.

….The government should be taking a precautionary approach, he said.
“We have this kind of tendency to not do anything about an issue until we have to. Everyone knows how dangerous this is, and we should be upgrading the wastewater infrastructure so that it doesn’t happen again.
“We need to start thinking of the longer term, climate change is here.”
Who would understand the political pain index as well as Wayne Brown? So gather round children, sit on the cushions on the floor, listen and learn, if you still have a brain left after so many years of trudging off into your version of what our society is about.
My task – to help you to a hollow laugh. Fawlty Towers brief:

Wayne Brown will be ousted at the next council election anyway let’s hope he doesn’t sell all the China (assets) beforehand. You get what you vote for and what you don’t vote for. I can already hear the shrieks coming out of Auckland when their rates climb, and more sewerage is spewing.
The rest of the country is fed up with subsidising Auckland projects – every time I hear the “government “ will pay a billion dollars for this road or rail route it means 2/3 of the cost is being paid for by people who don’t live in Auckland – even worse if you are one of the 23% that live in the South Island we produce twice as much overseas funds per head than the North Island and provide a big chunk of electricity to the North Island and get no thanks for it – a succession of governments has promoted development in the north especially round Auckland at the expense of the South Island – parliament is dominated by Auckland’s interests – time it stopped
Political and economic independence for the South Island perhaps !!
“Well, hang on, it is doing something.”
When Wayne Brown panics because National/ACT/NZ First is too extreme, you know something’s up!!
It’s like the KKK calling out the Nazi’s because they thought killing people with multiple-sclerosis was a just little too far.
