Another incredible show by the Q&A team providing the best political coverage this election and more evidence if needed that Jack is one of the best political interviewers in NZ.
He was hard on Chippy and Nicola, one stepped up, one failed appallingly.
Nicola Willis tranwreck interview this morning as she attempted to justify the many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many flawed failings of National’s tax policy was excruciating.
There’s simply no way National’s tax policy stands up in any way.
Jack Tame demolished the arguments behind their tax policy, their property tax, their gambling tax and every other argument holding it up and Nicola had so little to defend with.
There’s no way you can watch that interview and pretend that was the performance of a Finance Minister in waiting.
Robbing money from 2 year olds, climate change funds and public transport to give rich Landlords a $250 per fortnight tax cut is an obscenity and clearly defines the kind of country they want us to be.
It’s extraordinary that her interview was such a train wreck that it managed to eclipse Chippy’s best interview to date.
Now Labour have policy like GST off fruit and vegetables and Free Dental to champion alongside the grim corporate greed of National’s tax cut – voters have real reasons to engage and Chippy is hitting his stride.
Jack grilled him hard on Labour’s many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many failings and he had solid counter punches and had the jaw to take it.
The difference between Chippy and Luxon is that Chippy is likeable where as Luxon want’s you to like him.
Chris is small and Harry Potter like, Luxon is a massive 6ft deodorant skull and when lined up against each other in the debates, Goliath will tower over David, but there is the affable Chippy who devours sausage rolls and makes Dad jokes and then there is the Bishop Executioner Political Assassin who is sent in to do the kneecappings.
The vast majority haven’t seen that Chippy and I believe Luxon has a glass jaw and he’s never been punched in the face, and I think he’s gonna git that live on TV.
The debates will matter this election when you consider how high the don’t knows are.
That pharmaceutical quisling ACT MP who has been catapulted into 4th place is a cancer who wants to privatise PHARMAC. ACT is now controlled by Big Pharma, Big Dairy and Gun Festishists.
If that little pharmaceutical quisling gets anywhere near PHARMAC he will privatise it in a millisecond.
Labour have made up for a lack of much progress or policy with strategic twists that are inch by inch taking the election back.
Ruling out Winston, highlighting ACTs extremism, GST off fresh fruit and vegetables, cutting $4Billion in spending and now stepping up with free dental.
It’s an extraordinary game changing policy and it contrasts with National wanting to rob 2 year olds, public transport and climate funds to give tax cuts to rich landlords!
I get many are angry with Labour over Covid, and for some it’s a deal breaker, but you can not pretend that Labour/Greens and Maori Party on a bad day isn’t infinitely better than ACT/National/NZF on a good day!
The contrast is now glaringly clear. Labour/Greens or Maori Party for social policy focused on the many or ACT/National and NZFirst focused on the few.
Free Dental and GST off Fruit and vegetables vs Tax cuts for rich landlords funded by robbing 2 year olds, Public Transport and Climate budgets.
Comrades, Jacinda could have locked us all down for 3 years, it still doesn’t justify this venal and naked National Party self interest vs social policy for all of us!
National and ACT are currently leading in the polls, but it ain’t over till the fat blogger sings!

I think we all know what’s going to happen, when National’s 15% stamp duty on foreign buyer purchases of houses over 2 million, doesn’t raise the required money needed, and you have the countries experts, coming out and saying that it won’t raise the amount needed. Obviously National will then say, oops we have a problem, so we’ll need to extend the 15% stamp duty to all house purchases foreign or not. And National need to come clean on this issue, because the added 15%, is going to make it even more difficult for anyone to get onto the housing ladder, that is already so difficult currently. Has anyone collated the number of National MP’s with investment properties valued over 2 million, who will stand to gain from letting foreign buyers back. Which party’s MP’s stand to gain the most. How many of Luxon’s 7 houses are worth more than 2 million? The Chinese are not going to be happy if National start playing fast and loose with the agreement they have with NZ, that their citizens should be taxed at the same rate as persons in NZ, and not be subjected to taxes targeted at foreigners, so again the obvious answer will be for the 15% stamp duty to be applied to everyone. It’s not going to take much discomfort from China, NZ’s biggest export market, for National to do a very quick rethink. This just shows the stakes National is prepared to gamble, in play for to power. It won’t pay to poke China in the eye and to risk the hard fought for China FTA, which National seems oblivious to putting in jeopardy. So again the 15% stamp duty will probably quickly extend to all properties, to keep China happy. A CGT would take 10 years to start generating return, but the 15% stamp duty will be immediate. Like I said, National needs to come clean on this, before Luxon comes under scrutiny, and gets grilled on it during the TV debates, where a lot of people will be tuning in, to decide who to give their vote to.
For different reasons, I’m actually in favour of a stamp duty on property, but in the hands of the reserve bank, to give them a tool more precise than interest rates, to curb an overheating property market without affecting the wider economy.
The Reserve Bank basically needs more tools, including the Don Brash VSR tool, instead of using their main tool of interest rates, because it puts companies with high debt into bankruptcy during high interest rate periods, who could have otherwise have continued merrily along. And have the goods and services they once provided, often replaced by imports, doesn’t make much sense.
Most farms are priced over two million these days. Make stamp duties broad based it’ll be true feudalism, or narchism with in two generations.
“ and you have the countries experts, coming out and saying that it won’t raise the amount needed.”
Who are these supposed ‘experts’? Ex IRD deputy commissioner Robin Oliver said “ National’s plan stacks up”. Given the pent up demand, and the enthusiasm already for Nationals plan to remove the firing buyer ban on properties over $2m, the 15% tax may well raise more than predicted.
@ Liberty Belle. UofA prof Craig Elliffe was one. I think he’d qualify as an expert based on his credentials and background. He argued it was very light on details /costings/ modeling. Brad Olsen (Infometrics) was another. He also saw sparse detail as a lack of credibility. There are most likely other so called experts.
Simply put it is called plan B but the trouble is they (National won’t admit their plan A is going to fail) Instead they will resort to blaming.
LINO does NOT in ANY WAY justify a vote. They had ‘total’ power and did NOTHING with it. Let’s repeat that, they did NOTHING (of importance) for the 70+% workers. So WHY EVER believe that they WILL indeed represent the workers?
At least ALL the other party can CLAIM, they would do ‘it all’ if they had the power to. LINO can NOT.
Agreed NACT are EVEN worse, which is saying a LOT. UNLESS you are in the 1%, and maybe arguably in the 9%. The rest voting for them are USEFUL IDIOTS.
So what to do?
I guess the Maori party.
I don’t agree with most of what they stand for and I’m not Maori. BUT, they at least have a decent tax policy that is nominally aimed at helping the majority.
PLUS, there is the SLIGHTEST chance that the message might get across (and be indisputable) that the people of NZ WANT a fair, equitable and DECENT standard of living. BUT that might be a tad too hopeful, that these cruel-sick pollies REALLY CARE enough to listen. “it is hard to get those who salaries depend on NOT understanding your point of view, to understand your point of view’.
Greens have proved they are WORSE than LINO.
So as TOP look like they’re NOT winning a seat, this SHAM of a democracy, gives the thinking person ONLY ONE real option. How shameful of a state of NZ and its politics, is that.
p.s. I’m an ex Green voter (more fool me !), who is left wing, BUT LINO has NEVER ever been left wing (since 2000, when I arrived here) in my humble opinion.
But think of all that extra money in your back pocket…
Well, if you actually work that is.
It’s not in your back pocket is it. Its now back paying more for your public transport if your kids are using it. PS there’s a number of landlords that do f all work
What is this public transport concept you speak of? I’m not familiar with it in New Zealand. If it’s an issue, you could always get a bike, better for you & the environment.
Idiot, there will be no extra money in your back pocket.
There’s always money in my back pocket, my masters see to that.
Winz?
Maybe, but I sit on the side of the desk with the keyboard, opposite you 😉
In an alternative reality!
In truth, I never deal with the filthy peasants.
I hate Labour as a renter because Jacinda sold a dream and delivered a nightmare but I know that JK’s sight hand man will be worse. I will hold my nose and vote for Labour. Last chance.
Sorry about spelling mistake, was thinking shite but meant right.
No please don’t they have had all the chances they deserve. Transformational LOL LOL LOL
Te Pati Maori the first $30,000 will not be taxed.
Agree Jack did excellent hard hitting interviews and made them answer the ‘god dam question’ !
It was a disturbing, sad, depressing LIST of failures that Jack listed of Labour. No wonder everyone is desperate to see a mental health peep.
Saterdays Press newspaper .2 Stories
1 Senior Doctors and Dentists threaten to go on strike as many practices are not making money due to under funding from Labour.
2 Children with mental health needs are waiting up to 2 years to be seen due to a shortage of staff. Those with suicidal tendencies are seen with 3 months.
So suddenly we have the money for some free dental work a short time after Labour shot down the similar suggestion by the Greens as not be feasible. This is the same story with GST of fruit and veg which was not possible then a drop in polls and suddenly it on the table .
Exactly how? This adhoc – make policy up on the fly – Hail Mary, had got to be seen for what it is. Horse shit!
Watched with interest… firstly to see if Jack was as hard and persistent with Willis as he was with Chippy. He was! Chippy remained cool under fire; Willis was flustered and talked over Jack (yet she was obviously put up instead of Luxon who would have been crucified). Chippy fronted, Luxon didn’t. Says something!
Also interested to hear the 4th on ACT’s list – a relative unknown drug lobbyist – who will be clearly ACT’s health spokesperson. He was very unconvincing and looked like a possum caught in headlights. His interest is only in the small percentage in NZ and the world, who can afford such expensive, life-saving-enhancing drugs.
The NatACT coalition is looking more and more a government for the minority wealthy – and not only wealthy NZers, but anyone who can buy their way in.
That was well read…
@ Verity Verdant. I assume Nicola Willis was interviewed instead of Luxton because she is the finance spokesperson. Not all that convincing. They’re grasping at straws to attract the squeezed middle, read swingers.
Selling homes to foreign buyers?
Wonder where a large portion of these would potentially be from that NatCCP would be targeting?
Hmmmmm…
Terry Boucher (tax expert) on main parties tax policies:

Chippie is incredibly unlikeable. I remember his smug self-righteous covid briefings as Health Minister. Still waiting on a NZ independent inquiry regarding Labour’s reprehensible (and utterly ineffective) draconian covid policy, like most other countries are doing (e.g. UK, US, Australia). Crickets.
The ball is in your angry court – deal with it.
Their biggest problem is the lack of good team members, I am not convinced that National or ACT are any better and the evidence so far shows their policies are likely to increase the disparity within NZ.
boo hoo. what a wet and whiney bottom feeder.
National and Act are running on hate. The Banner Slogan of getting NZ back on track is no different from the slogans used by the American ultra-right lately. Locking into the white majority disillusioned with a changing world. And that does not bode well for NZ. Although they themselves are not racist..their supporters need to think they are.
Their biggest problem is the lack of good team members, I am not convinced that National or ACT are any better and the evidence so far shows their policies are likely to increase the disparity within NZ.
GST off fruit and vegetables – yes I heard some people are going to get a whole $3 from this.
If that was his best interview then God help me.
He looked far to anxious and was.
Vote Te Pati Maori – the two main parties can go to hell and squabble about it all there.
We all know how National will fund the “tax cuts” when they inevitably don’t meet their revenue targets. They’ll pull the old tax bait and switch by raising GST again, resulting in a net tax increase for most, hurting everyone except their rich mates. The sheeple of this country have such short memories.
Has anyone asked how Labour is funding their ‘free’ dental care ?
I guess not. Perhaps if National’s funding falls over, they will just do what Labour is going to do, and has done for six years.
Borrow.
So what’s the fuss about ?
Labour has the advantage of knowing what shape the books are in Richard. Our debt to GDP ratio is still good compared to many other countries. We also got good ratings from the credit agencies with an AAt and Aaa.
Your alive because of their borrowing Richard. The debate is whether that was money well spent?
cheer up bomber – they might pull a rabibit out of a hat and luck in with global energy markets – bwa haha
What I find difficult to understand is both Luxon and in particular Willis bemoan the debt taken on by Labour to get us through Covid including giving tax relief at the pump.
So by complaining of the extra debt taken and proclaiming wasteful spending, one can assume by this that money wasted on rightful increases in wages and salaries to health( nurses, allied health and shortly doctors), education, beneficiaries and businesses suffering through covid.
There is massive hypocrisy in Luxon and Willis and this is evidence by their complete lack of information as to whether they would have not invested in all those above mentioned.
It is extremely scary to think where National will make cuts to expenditure given their previous 9 years, whereby they cut funding in health, education, policing alongside cuts to kiwisaver and benefits whilst promoting rebates to landlords and a low wage economy.
It looks very evident National will win the election alongside Act. Seymour wants to cut the winter energy payment to the worse off. I would suggest that is simply callous.
Because of this, I will have a contingency plan that will involve taking my expertise and moving to Australia.
