King Country farmer in home invasion case where teen intruder’s finger cut running for Parliament
A King Country farmer who instructed his son to cut the finger off a teenage home intruder is running for Parliament.
William Bruce Burr, and his son Shaun, were a national talking point following their Hamilton High Court trial in May last year.
A jury found the pair not guilty of all charges after arguing self-defence – a verdict that divided the community and legal experts.
Some locals described the outcome as disgusting and disappointing, whereas some said they couldn’t have been happier.
Burr’s story of self defence demands of people ‘what would I do in that situation’ level projection and many, many, many would agree with Burr.
He is authentic and the level of frustration at the current gridlock is ripe for exploitation by someone like Burr.
He was attacked by intruders in his bed and he fought them off. He was punished for not having the proper gun papers and was punished for that, but he was found not guilty of assault or wounding with intent because it demanded of the Jury, ‘what would I do’.
Burr’s connection with MAGA and his back story could see him cause an enormous upset in the Taranaki-King Country as an independent.

Agreed, he’ll steal a few hundred votes from National and ACT, but there won’t be any apple carts being upturned down there.
The country is confused about law and its purpose. There is so much dependence on law that doesn’t solve anything improve anything or deliver justice.
Here in the Top of the South a family had a guard dog which was kept within a fence surrounding the house. They had a gate in the front and also at back fence with a warning about the dog but I think the front way was safe for visitors. But someone chose to ignore the back fence warning which included that the family required others to use the front gate for access. The man was bitten and the local council chose to regard it as an unreasonable attack and wanted the dog put down.
Those who break rules deserve some reaction. I think the intruder was not badly hurt. But some people put their wants before the rights of others. The family had no rights to safety of property.
This New Plymouth man may have been thinking of an earlier home invasion. I looked up google and they only gave for this year – but seven are listed. Google seems to have made changes and I don’t understand what they are doing.

There is definitely a problem with rural crime . Perhaps they have watched the film Bottle Rocket and found a pattern of life to follow. Abysmal. I think that many are only half socialised out there in the boondocks. And they can’t cope with life and what is going on down for Maori, as it takes extra thinking cells that have never been grown beyond small seedlings died.
So reaction and justification to every crime and disappointment are the see-saw they operate from. And farmers groups don’t arise from the peeps strong and determined to build good communities. The big boys have the Federated Farmers reins – have been taking over since the time of Crafars.
