David Seymour thinks it could be funny if people joke about blowing up ACT Party
ACT leader David Seymour has faced criticism from all sides of politics after he joked about his “fantasy” of sending notorious 16th century terrorist Guy Fawkes into the Ministry for Pacific Peoples.
Seymour told Stuff on Friday he does not resile from the comment because to do so would be to give currency to the idea he was being serious.
He even thinks it could be funny if people started joking about blowing up an ACT Party conference.
Seymour said the comedic value of such a joke “would depend on the circumstances”.
What a weird week.
David Seymour has had to twist his justification into making figurative jokes about Guy Fawkes into a bizarre claim that he would love jokes about blowing up ACT?
How the Christ have we gotten to this place?
If explaining is losing, then having to explain a joke is dying!
This on top of far right lunatic extremists who have joined his Party, and ACTs House of Cards built upon Jacinda revenge fantasises, garden variety bigotry and gun rights suddenly looks way less stable.
Compare that with Chippy who has had to step aside and look after his sick daughter, as any responsible father would. It humanises him and reminds you what a good bugger he is.
Compare that with Todd Muller’s final wisdom in Parliament this week, to be better on climate action, mental health and race relations. It humanised Todd and reminded you what a good bugger he was,
Compare that with Luxon’s hypocrisy over Tim van de Molen! When it was Kiri, Luxon wanted her head, when it is his own MP who threatened another MP, he’s merely taken away his portfolios.
The Right are looking a lot less palatable as the stresses of the campaign begin to start up.
ACT’s other candidates have a lot more to come out on them and National’s crony capitalism privatisation interests will start becoming more apparent.
When the books are opened next month and our exposure to China’s screeching halt will be laid bare, there will be a sense of crisis.
Voters will be asked who they trust in a a crisis, Chippy and Grant who are already tested or Chris Luxon and David Seymour.

Will he (David Seymour) still be making that joke after someone actually fire bombs one of his electoral office?
“Look, it was a joke. If you were offended I’m sorry. I will not make any more jokes this campaign”
That should have been Seymour’s first and last statement. Then he should have moved on. Right now he is just digging a bigger hole.
LOL. Allen (let’s be fair) got pissed, crashed a car and then deliberately resisted Police vs a backbench MP that got a little heated towards Shanan Halbert. The stacking of select committees and the behavior of Labour MPs in positions of power would make situations like this quite easy to occur.
Te Reo finds himself in a tough spot – his corporate woke background and Beltway’s strategy for attracting <40 females versus retaining what is left of National's male rump. Most hetrosexual males, have acted in similar ways to Van De Molen in their lives hence being overly puritanical would be putting more votes in Seymour and Peter's hands.
Was Seymour serious about whether it could be funny if people started joking about blowing up an ACT Party conference?
Or was he joking again?
I can’t tell.
Seymour’s party was up a percent after his Guy Fawkes fantasy.
The electorate doesn’t like identity politics or obscene bureaucratic waste, I’d say there’s a very good mandate to prune the Wellington bushes.
You are spot on Martyn.
Seymour has gone from inciting violence against the state to recruiting prospects to commit violence. Also I thought the government had a policy of not bringing their families into the political arena? Being the lead up to the election this must have changed. Thousands of other parents around the country stay home with their sick kids from time to time but they don’t run to the media about it. We also need to talk about the 700 million given out to these fanatical Auckland home buyers who didn’t do their due diligence when purchasing their drainage ditch of a home. If they can get a cool million each for their gross negligence then how bout a handout for the rest of us Grant? I didn’t make any appalling business decision, participate in rabid, unsustainable property speculation or undermine the insurance industry, so maybe I should get two million?
As someone with a modest sense of history, I found it somewhat reassuring that quite a number of people seem to have understand the implication of Guy Fawkes’ name
