Chippy’s last chance – is GST and Working for Family crumbs enough for Cost of living Crisis?

Labour tax policy: Chris Hipkins reveals removal of GST from fruit and vegetable in bid to ease cost of living

Labour will remove the GST from fruit and vegetables and make changes to Working for Families that will benefit about 160,000 families.

Chris Hipkins is revealing the party’s tax policy and has confirmed no changes to income tax levels and no introduction of new taxes such as a Wealth Tax or Capital Gains Tax.

The In-Work Tax Credit will be raised by $25 a week to $97.50 and the Working for Families abatement threshold will be raised, but not until 2026, to $50,000 to reflect wage growth.

Hipkins said removing GST from fruit and vegetable was “fairly simple” and would come into effect on April 1.

They had one chance to take the election back by using the leak to surprise everyone.

They should have come out with GST off all Supermarket food, that would have been meaningful, this bullshit nothing with a small fart towards Working For Families is a gutless cowardly ball-less announcement that just makes you want Labour to fucking lose!

The new Working For Families increase DOESN’T EVEN INCLUDE BENEFICIARIES FOR FUCKS SAKE!

That’s right, the 200 000 poorest kids won’t get one cent of that money, did you realise that? That’s $73 a week those poorest kids are missing out on because this is only available for anyone NOT on a benefit.

What’s the point of Bread and Butter politics if no one can afford the Bread or butter?

The only silver lining here is that when the Books get opened next month and the full exposure of the NZ economy to China’s dramatic slowdown is made public, Labour’s GST and WFF crumbs will look like a 3 course meal.

All Labour have now is Chippy’s performance in the election debates and the hope Luxon fucks up.

Honestly, after this election no matter whoever wins, the Political Left needs to meet to see if a new political vehicle focused on Left Wing Economic values  is what is needed here because between Labour’s cowardly incrementalism and the Greens alienating woke dogma, both Party’s have utterly failed us on the task of meaningful change.

the only ones actually trying are the Māori Party who’s tax policy is easily the best of all Political Parties this election.

The rich, the Bankers and the Property Speculators will all be laughing.

The only hope for real progress is that Chippy is forced during negotiations by John Tamihere and the Greens into doing something real.

I blame Seven Sharp and The Project for making us this collectively stupid.

  1. This policy is going to be a total fizzer, and the benefits of it will be very, very small. And there is already a way to take GST off fresh fruit and veges – grow your own, which are lot of people are already doing.

And why that. There are heaps of things that could be taken out of GST that would make things cheaper.

GST was only brought in because it largely couldn’t be avoided, was broad based and could be run with minimal overheads.

And the increase to WFF is someone that Bill English would have proposed in one of his budgets.

I feel sorry for those in Labour who have to campaign on this policy, even though it is total garbage.

As much as I hate NACT, and fear the right, Ill most probably staying home on October 14.

    • cmon millsy – at least vote for TOP NZF or TPM. – the anarchists, ethnisists and nationalists might be closer to a collective than any of the BS tory libtard unionist nonsense in the middle will ever get.

    • btw – andrew tate and his brother are free – lol. whilst they may be toxic exploitative assholes… I see nothing they do as morally wrong – ethically maybe but …meh – try and argue ethics with them .. lol

  2. About as stupid as anyone who believes the duopoly would actually reduce prices by 15% for more than 5min

  3. If the supermarkets can’t add gst to fruit and veges do they
-not have to pay their supplier gst when they purchase the f&v
    – if the supplier does not receive gst on the f&v they sell can they still claim gst on the cost of production.
    – do supermarkets have to work out what % of their costs come from that area of their shop and that equipment used in the sale of f&v and not claim that % of their overall costs when working out their gst returns.
If not Labour have just handed the supermarkets a nice little profit boost.

  4. Seven sharp and Project are to blame. Neither has ever asked a hard question of anyone in power.

Very underwhelming announcement from Labour. The consumer won’t even see or notice any price decreases on pumpkin or capsicum.

Missed opportunity to be brave and innovative.

For example could have said we are setting up our own electrc Kiwi car manufacturing plant in Thames or Huntley to supply kiwis with affordable high quality electric cars and offer high paying jobs , new housing ,Where they will have the option of retiring your old dunger for a new modern electrc car or truck for no extra cost.

  5. On GST, Didn’t National do this announcement a few weeks ago? It was thrashed out, Grant told us months ago it was a stupid idea, and as a result the policy was seen as pointless, we yawned then we moved on.

As for Working for Families anything. Technical, confusing, may deliver $3.74 per fortnight or something equally as useless this a few people. Its about as inspiring as a 350 slide PowerPoint chartered accountants conference on fringe benefit tax variables.

It seems a lifetime ago Chippy, Parker and local man, Shannon, waxed lyrical about tunnels from somewhere to I dont know starting one day light years from now, that everyone ignored!

  7. Toxic Tovs made it out like it was a HUGE announcement. This announcement was like expecting Disneyland and then arriving at the Easter Show.

That this is the best they can do shows just how shit economically we are travelling. Good effort Grant – that is all on you and your red faced mate.

Imagine how bad the loss would be if National had someone half decent running the show……

  8. Desperate measures require desperate solutions but is $20 a month going to undo the last 6 years of poor governance.
Robertson must be livid as this has made him look silly. How many times will we see a mention of his speech from a few months ago were he said it was not possible. and was a bad idea.

      • Millsy, for once I agree with you. He’s run out of steam, run his course and looks about as engaged as man whose been putting lids on toothpaste tubes for the past 30 years!

  9. What is even more irritating is that the email we have just received from our MP says:
    12 000 state homes built since 2017

This is a total lie lie lie as Minto has said – in the Press this week, liars.

  10. Rat n a Cage I thought considering the trends in the polls that Labour would have been desparate to offer some inspiration or bright idea. Not reheat old Phil Goff policy.

But your right, sadly they just live in a beltway echo chamber.

  11. And just like that, Labour hands the election to National.

Talk about a lame duck administration.

“The only hope for real progress is that Chippy is forced during negotiations by John Tamihere and the Greens into doing something real.” MARTYN BRADBURY

    That’s never going to happen

Multimillionaires and establishment politicians like Chris Hipkins are unused to being forced to do anything they don’t want to.
“forced” being the Key word here.

In what reality would Chris Hipkins ever be “forced” to be in the same room with the Greens and the Maori Party?

Not if he can throw an election instead.

    Lame Duck

1: one that is weak or that falls behind in ability or achievement
especially, chiefly British : an ailing company
2: an elected official or group continuing to hold political office during the period between the election and the inauguration of a successor
3: one whose position or term of office will soon end
    lame-duck
    ˈlām-ˈdək
    adjective

  12. Labour will remove GST off food – next year.

We will not even get the benefit of this measly reform.

Because everyone knows that Labour will not be in government next year.

  13. Great to see Labour remove gst on fruit and vegetables. Be able to afford lemons now, after all whats a G & T without a slice of lemon

  14. My guess is Labour is busy avoiding to be in government after the election. They want out! I think they’ll be successful.

  15. Don’t know which is worse, being bribed for a vote in order to receive GST off food, or Labour not acting immediately to combat the cost of living while acknowledging people are hurting.

  16. I once believed Labour was all about principle, but National was all about seizing and keeping power.
No more. Labour has trashed the GST system in an effort to crawl back to the Treasury benches. There is nothing they wouldn’t stoop to now. Hipkings has dragged them into the quicksand. There is no escape now, unless they are soundly thrashed come October, and rebuild from ground zero.

  17. lol – this is desperate stuff indeed. the last wishes of a dead unicorn. the left is fucked. long live the left.

  18. Given Seymour won’t work with Winston is the GST off food policy just a signal that Labour can find the baubles to work with NZF?

  19. I can’t wait for the Tories to get in – then we can hold them to the same account as we all held the Labour Party – can’t we? lol – looking at a few big talkers on the right. can’t wait for the excuses to come rolling in.

    • Yes it’s staggering how posters here bring up cost of living, housing etc and then say thank god the Alliance of Arseholes will be in and actually going do something about it. That’s laughable. Of course pointing out the f’ing obvious somehow makes you a Labour supporter as opposed to not f’ing stupid.

  20. it’s enough to make a socialist nationalist to get some reality back in the picture. imagine if hitler never killed anyone. prolly never got elected but – imagine a social nationalism that worked for everyone in “our” society.

  21. Dogs balls are tidier than Labours concepts – this GST removal is an absolute joke. Just alter the tax bracket amounts and target the assistance with the touch of IRD buttons. Bureaucracy with this has already been announced and it is already a committee group retirement set up. How can I get on that committee gravy train.
How anyone can vote for this Govt is beyond me. I have lost respect for Grant Robertson as he follows blindly.

  22. 28th of July 2023, National Party Finance spokeswoman Nicola Willis
announces the GST off food policy for the Labour Party.

Chippy may not be colluding with the National party directly himself. But someone in his cabinet or Ministry is. That he has not acted to root out this person, shows that he is quite comfortable with the situation, as he prepares to hand over his governing role to them, .
