Assange ruling a crushing blow to democracy and journalism

UK court permits Julian Assange extradition to US on spying charges

A British appellate court opened the door on Friday for Julian Assange to be extradited to the United States by overturning a lower court ruling that found the WikiLeaks founder’s mental health was too fragile to withstand the American criminal justice system.

The High Court in London ruled that US assurances were enough to guarantee Assange would be treated humanely and directed a lower court judge to send the extradition request to the home secretary for review. The home secretary, who oversees law enforcement in the UK, will make the final decision on whether to extradite Assange.

However, the appellate court ruling handed down Friday is likely to be appealed.

Most NZ Media rooms are now slavish cowards to the woke social media lynch mob, and the Woke’s denigration of Assange as a rapist means any coverage in NZ must be deplatformed and never spoken of.

Incredibly Nicky Hager’s astounding witness evidence given in the show trail against Assange was utterly ignored by the NZ media.

New Zealand’s most famous Investigative Journalist gives witness evidence in the journalism trial of the century and all you hear are crickets in NZ?

It’s astounding watching it up close because normally Hager’s work is championed by the Woke, it’s fascinating seeing him deplatformed by NZ mainstream media’s self censorship for fear of triggering a woke lynch mob.

This type of cowardly journalism’s irony is poignant because of course Assange is one of the most important voices in real journalism.

Without his work the war crimes, the murders, the abuses of power that damage all the people those Woke claim to care about would never have seen the light of day.

This stopped being about Justice a long time ago.

What a bitter day for democracy and journalism!

  1. Until all the evidence is fairly presented, without any pressures from any societal group, justice has not occurred.

  2. Assange’s fate is a test for the left. Those who cannot recognise that the US is the No 1 global terrorist and Assange was instrumental in exposing this fact in its invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan, are not of the left but rather rightist lackeys of servile capitalist regimes lining up for imperialist war.

The woke left have sold their principles to the Labour regime which will not resist any of the demands put upon it by finance capital to let the market rule and to hell with humanity. It will not oppose the US pushing for a showdown with China and Russia and their allies like Iran.

Driven to war by a terminal crisis, destroying nature, erasing women, using Covid to isolate and attack workers’ resistance, punish whistleblowers, and target refugees, these regimes are marching towards fascism.

There is only one way to smash fascism and overthrow the rotting capitalist system and that is for workers to unite in defence of their rights, to organise globally to take power, remove the ultimate cause of the destruction, repression and oppression, and return to nature and society living in harmony.

    • Dave Brown when you turn the actions of gummint to insist on vaccination into a crime against humanity you show that you are lacking in reason and unable to find balance when it comes to the scales of justice. You lose credibility with people seeking the vital mixture of kindness and practicality – without mentioning morality ethics etc, It shows a lack of balance so needed these days of information and education – not chaotic turbulent mind explosions.

      • Your comment is a projection because a lot of good, if not debatable points, were raised here, but it only took one of these points to tip your scales….

  3. You’re quite right Bomber. This all just goes to show how deeply into the mire of mediocrity we have all sunk.
Are there any thinking people still out there?

  4. Que the next legal appeal in this never-ending-saga?

America should just give it up already! When his plane lands in the States they [America] should Reverse-501 him and deport Assange back to Australia.

While Assange’s flight is en route, ALL countries he holds citizenship to could revoke such citizenship behind Australia’s back, therefore forcing Australia to take him.. a Reverse-501-Revoke if you will. That would be HA-larious !!

Ok.. I’m being a bit silly, but hey.. stranger things really do happen every day. Also I don’t know if he still holds Australian citizenship, last I heard the Aussies weren’t keen.

Assange has suffered enough. Yet the American State seems determined to grind him into the ground.

Edward Snowden was a lot more considered with his leaking, there is no doubt Snowden is a hero and very considered.. even intelligence agencies have respect for him.

WikiLeaks had an editorial process, but I imagine with the volume of information leaked, at some point a credible argument for treason could be made. Certainly WikiLeaks has embarrass powerful people and governments.

I haven’t followed Assange in depth, I can’t know the consequences of his activities at WikiLeaks, both Good or Bad. I think Assange has done a great service for humanity, shining a light on what happens in darkness.

More journalists should come to his aid. He’s suffered enough, just exile him to Australia already, he needs the vitamin-D.

  5. This travesty shows us all that democracy, justice and journalism, just to name a few examples, are at the mercy of the powerful. Why oh why we hold such faith in these ‘mechanisms’ of the powerful, in this day and age, is beyond me…

  6. Speaking truth to power has unleashed the monster that lies beneath the surface of our counterfeit civilised society.
Julian Assange has shamefully been abandoned by many of his profession.
History should judge this travesty with the profound disgust that it deserves but the corrupt managers who orchestrate our lives can manipulate, distort and pay to write history whichever way they f…… well like.
    Free Julian Assange.
