On the first day of Parliament, Simon Bridges played Chris Hipkins by pretending National had more numbers in the house than they did and threatened Trevor Mallards speaker role. Chippie got flustered, forgot to count his own numbers and ended up handing National enormous power on select committee positions.
That was a bad day for the Government.
Yesterday, Chippie finally erased that first day screw up by playing the system and pushing through the gun law changes without David Seymour realising it was happening because Seymour was out with the media boasting how he and he alone would challenge the speed of the gun law changes.
Catching Seymour out was as much a redemption for Chippie as it was a repudiation to Seymour’s media preening.

Yes Labour are finally learning play rough in the sandpit also as National did for nine years.
National used the “stealth initiative” to pass into law anything they wanted while the ‘sheeples slept’ as you pointed out so very often.
This article below also shows how National has allowed the Chinese Government to now dump all our rubbish into their NZ owned landfill sites next to our sensitive water-ways, is now yet another demonstration of the dirty deeds national allowed to destroy our once ‘pristine land’.
https://www.radionz.co.nz/news/national/375694/battle-against-dome-valley-dump-plan-gears-up
CEAC responds to a Chinese Government company planning ‘rubbish waste landfill’ near our NZ waterways.
This mother of the late tech millionaire Tony Lentino said; -“My son’s ashes are sprinkled at Spring Hill and I’m buggered if I’m going to let a foreign company come and desecrate our beautiful countryside.”
Government needs to place a moratorium on landfill damp-sites by foreign companies destroying our NZ clean green image while destroying our clean water supply with toxic waste that will cause health risks to citizens.
This health risk is now forcing Government to now act to protect our health and wellbeing of all citizens.
Just as Government are forcing landlords to make their properties they rent safe for citizens so Government must apply the same rules to stopping the dumping of toxic refuse waste into landfills all over NZ that have now shown to damage our environment and pollute our water systems.
Government, – we at CEAC say, “use your rules of ‘public health and wellbeing’ to place a moratorium on landfill and the dumping of toxic waste all over our “beautiful countryside.”
Ha Ha. Seymour, what a waste of space and taxpayers dollars.
All this from a man a man who got how many votes from a wealthy area of (Epsom) voters is struggling to be relevant hopefully he will be gone at the next election he is actually an idiot.
Are we OK with our democracy being so easily gamed?
Whether it be Seymour, Hipkins or whomever?
Yes, making a joke of our democratic systems checks and balances, as weak as they are.
A sure way to get good safe laws.
Im for the buyback but understand that the wording, timing and money offered to MSSA owners are critical to a good uptake of centrefire semi auto guns handed in.
The government has created thousands of criminals at the stroke of a pen and upset many blameless gun owners.
No I don’t own MSSAs – but we will all wear the cost of bad law forced on people – in guns driven underground.
Ditto when we get to a gun register. Take gun owners with you, consult don’t demonise and force people.
At least when we see a register doesn’t work and the gun black market explode, the police will get to wear guns so we will be much safer, and we know the gangs will hand their guns back.
It works overseas…
“The government has created thousands of criminals at the stroke of a pen and upset many blameless gun owners”. A little bit emotive – they only become ‘criminals’ if they don’t surrender the MSSA’s before the specified date.
It’s exactly the same as when people could legitimately sell party pills until they were outlawed. People who failed to stop selling them became criminals because they put themselves above the law.
re: “At least when we see a register doesn’t work and the gun black market explode” if politicians (from both sides of the spectrum) had had the balls over the past 20 years to require a gun register, we wouldn’t be in the state we are now.
The fact that anyone would say it’s okay to lets things continue as they have done for decades is probably a climate denier as well.
Interesting take, if you could just point me to where I said to continue as we have for decades? No, Just making shit up?
Climate denial? Spot the person with no facts to argue, just emotion.
This piece is a sensible read:
https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/christchurch-shooting/111766391/our-gun-laws-must-work-for-all-new-zealanders
“There is the obvious argument that most criminals don’t register their guns, so a registry creates both a false sense of gun control while it inconveniences only law-abiding gun owners. Gun registries also have a very spotty record. Any success in Australia – and that remains up for debate – must be set against New Zealand’s own historical experience with a largely inaccurate registry. Canada too abandoned a long-gun registry in 2011. It had turned into a billion dollar debacle that pitted urban voters against rural and achieved only limited participation from gun owners.
So, deep breath, it is crucially important that any new rules work for the widest possible range of New Zealanders. That means we need to hear from them. Even the ones with ideas we don’t like”
All logical, rational, well made points based on verifiable evidence, (sigh) a pleasure to read. I am so worn out with the emotional minefield of righteous, name calling, attributing evil intentions to people we’ve never met, type of arguing based on ‘this is what me and me mates think and if you don’t agree you’re an idiot’
What does Seymour stand for? The right to die? To live with some dignity? To fetishise guns? Or just to blow his own tiny trumpet? PS : Thank you media scrum, you rock
The “Epsom Twerker” may be thankful in future years to not have been recorded in Hansard as the only dick to vote “No” on banning semi autos.
But he certainly remains a dick!
