Simon Bridge’s previous job was as Criminal Prosecutor, Tauranga. He saw his job as getting as many “bad guys” as possible locked up for as long as possible. But he doesn’t know much about what motivates people to reoffend.
Most non drug addicted inmates would say , if they were allowed to be polled on the subject, that the greatest deterrence to reoffending is the certainty of detection and apprehension.
The Italian study Bridges quoted for support for longer sentences actually says longer sentences encourage reoffending by destroying the habits inmates need for good citizenship.
Working on that and rehabilitation to all who want it will empty our prisons substantially.

I believe he is trying to model himself after his hero, whom I perceive to be John Key .. a misguided choice of roll model at best. He is also potentially a sociopath .. which would explain his ability to become leader of the National Party, despite his unsuitability.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not suggesting he’s a full blown sociopath – he comes across quite transparent to intelligent people, people normally taken in by such a pathology.
He makes many ignorant statements and could easily be considered an idiot, which is strange given his education and rise to power. He has a Shakespearean ambition doomed to end in a vanilla Macbeth – I wish him ‘Good Luck’ in the public theater, lol.
The problems for National are, even though they got us thru the financial crisis, they continued to under fund too many components of the system for too long that People are learning after the fact. Pike River may reveal more dark secrets about their modus operandi!
National need to keep him as leader of the Opposition for as long as possible so he can grow into the position and build his credibility with the NZ Public.
Simon Bridges was a very good prosecuter in the art of lies and deception in making out that someone in front of the judge for a minor offense was a rapist or murder. And Taurangas conservative judges bought Simon’s story each time… stories in the same league as the fictional story that put Teina Pora away for twenty plus years.
I witnessed this, and Simon Bridges incombant tried the same thing on me by making a story to the judge that I was a rapist when I was in front of the judge for only running naked which eventually was thrown out in the high Court.
Simon Bridges is in the fascist league as Donald Trump and God save New Zealand if he becomes Prime Minister, because nothing will save our future.
