Pike River families are welcoming Allied Concreteโ€™s decision not to supply the concrete required to seal the Pike River Mine.
Allied has contacted Sonya Rockhouse, whose son Ben was killed in the mine, to assure her they will halt supply until the dispute over re-entering the mine is resolved.
โ€œWe are incredibly relieved by this decision,โ€ says Sonya. โ€œAllied has shown real moral strength in stopping this work and is a great example of a good family business.
โ€œWe understand this means the sealing of the mine cannot go ahead, and weโ€™re grateful to Allied and to all of the Kiwis who have supported us to stop the mine being sealed.
โ€œWe have never lost faith in New Zealandersโ€™ belief in doing the right thing, and weโ€™re hoping that this sends a message to the Government to follow suit and to honour John Keyโ€™s promise to get our boys out.
โ€œWe have international and local experts who say the drift is safe to enter. There may be the bodies of our boys in there as well as evidence that shines a light on what happened that terrible day.
โ€œAll we want is the chance to go in and check before our boys and any evidence is sealed away forever.โ€

  1. Some chap from Howick in the Herald Letters – Monday, 14th November 2016 – said a drone or self-driving robot via university group capability could go in to check the conditions and he would lead the project; crowd funding may be needed, but it would be a fact that if the government refused even that to go into the mine, then they have other reasons for wanting to seal the mine. What are they?

    • yes that sounds good J a decent robot not the rubbish type we sent in last time its like sending a boy to do a mans job. I am happy to donate funds I bet others are to if it means we have a chance of getting any of our men out.
