WAATEA NEWS COLUMN: How has The Matua started a fight with ET???
Far be it from me to advice the Minister for anti-woke Mining, but Shane Jones starting a fight with ET is akin to Trump starting a fight with the Pope, I mean like, sure, you CAN do it, but the question is ‘why on earth would you’?
Steven Spielberg is one of the great movie makers of the 20th and 21st Century. His body of work is some of the most beloved films ever made, so why has Matua Shane Jones started a war of words with Spielberg?
In the wake of the tragic death of Sam Neill, Spielberg has made an enormous donation to the anti Bendigo-Ophir mine campaign that Sam was championing. Sam’s activism brought down upon him the wrath of Matua Shane Jones who is promoting the mine. That attack by Shane Jones saw Sam face death threats from some of NZ First’s more unhinged supporters.
As a recognition of Sam’s activism, Steven Spielberg has made a large donation in Sam’s memory. Sam and Spielberg worked together on the Jurassic Park franchise.
This has led the Matua to attack Spielberg for making the donation. He said: ““Now, this Steven Spielberg, ET go home, this Indiana Jones – actually not a bad name actually – he has no business spraying dough around trying to influence the outcome of the Santana mine.”
Why The Matua thinks attacking ET, one of the most beloved figures in cinema, while help win the debate for his mine is beyond me.
We absolutely do need to have a mature and adult discussion about mining in NZ, but The Matua has no interest in such a debate. He is far more focused turning the issue into an anti-woke rant so that he is never challenged on the environmental pollution or the climate change issues his mining fantasies produce.
Some would suggest that it is the Mining Industries donations to NZ First that are the real driver for The Matua’s enthusiasm to mine, but whatever the reason, waging war on ET, Steven Spielberg and Sam Neill.
Who will The Matua pick a fight with next? The Easter Bunny? Santa Clause? His own shadow?
The Matua is becoming more shrill as the tide slowly turns on his terrible Government.
He may find it is the electorate who tells him to ‘go home’, not the legacy of Sam Neill.

It was an error of judgement for “Sustainable Tarras” to accept the financial donation from Steven Spielberg. Preserving the whenua from foreign intrusion and exploitation is a task that should fall to the tangata motu of Aotearoa, and no one else.
Spielberg and Sustainable Tarras have made it all too easy for Shane Jones and his kupapa colleagues to portray this as a case of Hollywood rich-listers jumping in to deny Kiwi workers the chance of a decent job and income.
You ask “why has … Shane Jones started a war of words with Spielberg?” and the answer is “because Spielberg and Sustainable Tarras gave him that opportunity on a plate”.
Really, really bad. What is up with Sustainable Tarras? Are they tangata motu, or are they just a bunch of wealthy liberals who want to enjoy a privileged Central Otago lifestyle?
Shane Jones is a cynical traitor to our people, but hooking up with the plutocrats of Hollywood is no way to combat him.
