WAATEA NEWS COLUMN: Demographic explosion inside Māori Electorates could be huge for Greens and Te Pati Māori

As Te Pati Māori’s unique MMP strategy for the candidate vote only settles in, the most interesting feature of the upcoming election in the Māori Electorates is the demographic explosion that has occurred in recent years as more and more young Māori sign up onto the Māori Roll.

This is the next generation of Māori, educated in immersion Kura and who express Tino rangatiratanga by enrolling on the Māori roll.

The confidence in their identity means they will vote.

And that could have enormous repercussions.

45.6% of those on the Māori roll are now under 40! That is an enormous demographic change and if those young Māori vote, it could have an enormous impact on the Green Party vote share in the Māori electorates as well as a huge new pool of voters TPM can call upon to candidate vote them in.

If roughly six in ten new Māori enrolments continue choosing the Māori roll, every election cycle replaces some older voters with a cohort disproportionately entering the Māori electorates.

There is another big structural number, in March 2026 the Electoral Commission reported 304,508 Māori voters on the Māori roll versus 257,561 on the general roll — 54% to 46%

So younger Māori aren’t simply replenishing the existing Māori-roll population; their enrolment choices are helping maintain a majority of enrolled Māori on the Māori roll.

Last election, the Greens only managed 10% Party vote in the 7 Māori electorates, with such a huge change in the age demographics, and with TPMs candidate vote only strategy, the Greens could harvest 3 times that number.

This all matters in the final make up of any new Government.

This election could be won, or lost, depending on how Māori youth vote this election.
