The attack killed one civilian and injured several others. Al-Darbi was convicted [in a plea bargain] in 2017 and later transferred to Saudi Arabia in 2018.
At the time of al-Darbi’s transfer, The Associated Press and The New York Times reported that Kassem said, “While it may not make him whole, my hope is that repatriation at least marks the end of injustice for Ahmed… He had 16 long and painful years in captivity.”
In 2025, according to ACLU press releases and the case Khalil v. Trump, Kassem represented Mahmoud Khalil, an anti-Israel activist and former Columbia University student. Khalil was arrested by ICE for allegedly leading antisemitic campus demonstrations. Khalil has since been released, though his legal case is still ongoing.
