Former National Party Cabinet Minister, new columnist at Stuff and recreational coup plotter, Chris Penk, amazingly wrote a review of Nicky Hager’s new book last week, without actually reading his new book.
Now, I don’t wish to sound cynical, because we all love the Penky, but writing a review about a book without actually reading the book kinda feels like cheating. He didn’t get paid for that column right?
Getting AI to write your book review is one thing, having it write the review without even having read the book feels like you’re taking the piss.
Penk’s argument is that Hager’s book amounts to the Left not liking the Right which is as grotesque a misrepresentation as the Gulf of America, Lake America or the Kennedy Trump centre.
The lack of intellectual curiosity to even read what he criticises is a reminder that Chris Penk is still at heart a National Party Cabinet Minister.
If he’s writing reviews about books he hasn’t read you understand why his coup against Luxon failed.
Talking of abject failure. ZB hate troll farmer, Heather Duplissie Allan, waded in on Hager’s book with a completely unique and utterly unhinged perspective.
As far as Heather was concerned, she couldn’t take Nicky’s book seriously because he had referred to National as ‘Hard Right’.
This Government with its anti-Māori, anti-Treaty, anti-worker, anti-Union, anti-environment, anti-beneficiary, anti-disabled and anti-renter agenda has been the most ideologically extreme at promoting culture war revenge fantasies as social policy, that we’ve ever seen.
Heather balking at ‘Hard Right’ to describe that agenda and using that to discredit Hager is so flimsy it’s barely a straw man.
She’s writing this opinion for a media company owned by an Alt-Right Canadian Culture War Billionaire who has a penchant for recreationally paying the legal bills of racists and anti-vaxxers for crying out loud.
The never ending war on the environment, the strangling of the common good for their donors interests, the way big polluters are copy and pasted into law, the draconian punishments meted out to beneficiaries, the never ending gravy train of corporate welfare, the abdication of responsibility for state housing, arresting the homeless after manufacturing more, the Pay Parity betrayal AND almost starting a race war – ALL of this is ‘Soft Right’ according to Heather which makes you wonder if she was weaned on the empty and shrunken breast of Ayn Rand’s corpse during formative years because if that’s all ‘Soft Right’, I’m literally terrified of what Heather thinks can be done during martial law’

Finally this week. At least Penk and Heather acknowledged they knew who Nicky Hager was.
Bewilderingly the Prime Minister when asked about Nicky’s new book claimed “he did not know who Nicky Hager was’.
Really?
Now this is tough right?
Normally the idea of any NZ Politician claiming they don’t know who Nicky Hager was would be met with a chorus of ‘liar’, but our current Prime Minister has such little cultural curiosity about the country he runs, there is actually a really good chance that he’s being honest.

He can’t tell the difference between the Warriors and the Waratahs, so why would he know Nicky Hager.
The intellectual difference between a yoghurt and a dinner party with Chris Luxon – is that the yogurt has an active culture.

The Hard Right sure don’t get any smarter out there! They are very good at putting their feet in their mouths, then blaming someone else for it. The fact that our PM has never heard of Nicky Hager shows us how ‘personally insulated’ he is. Hager has written six very revealing political books and it’s great that we have a NZ author who can bring contentious issues to the forefront. It’s all about accountability! And to review a book you have never read is another typical HRW knee-jerk reaction, which makes Penk look so very foolish! Then there’s Heather, who took the bait and made a real ‘dick’ of herself with her denial that our CoC is not Hard Right. Of course it is! If we weren’t sure before, this last three years has proved that! We can all see what is happening in NZ, but most of us can do nothing but watch the mayhem, greed and total corruption. The fact that this CoC fast-tracked so much important legislation without input from the public or select committees, then rammed them through, shows us what kind of govt. has been in power the last three years! Hard to believe anyone out there wants them back at the helm!
