TDB Summer Election Special: Is TOP real or a Gareth Morgan vanity project?

26

Is The Opportunity Party real or a Gareth Morgan vanity project? We should know the answer  to that by Wednesday 1st of February as that is when the nominations for the Mt Albert by-election close.

If Gareth is serious he will be a candidate in that by-election, if he isn’t serious he won’t be there.

Gareth Morgan could be the anti-candidate that the electorate is looking to channel their Trump and Brexit frustrations into.

His surprising position on Palestine, his hard line on the environment and his strong support of a Universal Basic Income has the potential to disrupt politics and rupture ideological boundaries.

Gareth’s solution based policy will actually come across far more radical than Labour or the Greens policy platforms. Morgan has spent a huge time educating and learning about challenges like Universal Basic Income, affordable housing, climate change and pollution.

TOP will appeal to urban males who default vote to National because they’re made to feel guilty for having a  penis inside the Labour or the Greens. That on its own is enough to peel voters off National, Greens and bring some of the disconnected million voters who don’t vote because of the poor choices on offer by the two major parties to give him 5%.

But where Morgan could gain 15% is if he ignites a populist move against the neoliberal welfare State while selling the UBI to those beneficiaries who currently live in terror of WINZ, Housing NZ, MoD, CYFs, Probations, Corrections etc etc etc.

Labour can’t criticise what those Government Departments do to the poorest and weakest members of society because they are beholden to the PSA, but Gareth Morgan could hold up terrible example after terrible example form the neoliberal welfare state and argue convincingly that rather than pour those billions into government services that are ultimately counter productive to the most vulnerable, why not put it into a Universal Basic Income instead?

Morgan could be our anti-establishment candidate and he has a real chance to do something unique here, whether he’s serious will come down to if he runs in the Mt Albert by-election.

The disastrous decision by the Greens to run in Mt Albert builds an immediate platform during the news dead zone of February. If Morgan ran he could spend 4 weeks pumping TOP policy against Jacinda and Julie Anne Genter, showing up how safe their policies are in comparison to the far more radical ideas TOP has.

It would give Gareth a huge platform and there’s even the remote possibility that he could come through the middle of Genter and Jacinda. Gareth could rightfully point out to the voters of Mt Albert that they already have Jacinda and Julie Anne in Parliament, so electing him would actually create something unique and send a very clear signal to Wellington that voters are sick of the same old same old.

It’s an easy pitch and Gareth is a talented speaker. He has an opportunity to make TOP something unique, he just has to get his nomination in as late as possible to surprise the media.

The 10 news sites NZers should check out daily

22

According to the latest PEW international news consumption research, most social media news consumers only get news on one site…

That is  pretty disturbing truth in a post truth world.

We have moved from a ‘I think therefore I am’ environment to a “I believe therefore I am right’ kind of landscape.

Having a diverse news diet is as important for you as a proper nutritionally balanced meal and here are the 10 NZ news sources you should check out daily to have a better comprehension of the world around us.

10: Waatea News

Waatea News is the best source of an indigenous voice on the politics of the day. Waatea News is an incredible resource for some of the best journalism in NZ. It often has unique perspectives and breaking Maori news that helps explain much of the symptom news you get on the mainstream a few weeks later.

9: Vice NZ News

Vice offers some of the best cultural investigations and news critiques around. Their new TV channel on Sky is the most exciting thing to happen to NZ media landscape since the launch of TV3.

8: Aljazeera

One of the best international news sites on offer. They have a journalistic focus on people and power that insures a wide range of news events get covered that you simply never see appear in Western media.

7: Democracy Now

The best liberal news organisation in America, they were the first non-indigenous media at Standing Rock. Their passion to hold the Military Industrial Complex to account for America’s appalling foreign affairs policy is never ending. Noam Chomsky is on the site all the time, and his wisdom and insights are always worth watching.

6: The Villainesse

The best feminist blog in NZ. Powerful insights and great journalism. A daily must read.

5: No Right Turn

Excellent analysis of NZ and international trends on politics.

4: The Wireless

The youth arm of radio NZ, it’s always well written and interesting. A bit like a Christian Vice though. They don’t have sex at The Wireless, but if they did they would have consent forms counter signed in triplicate by a local JP.

3: The Guardian

One of the best liberal perspectives from the UK although their anti-Corbyn stance highlights the cultural divide of the elites and why Brexit happened.

2: The Intercept

The best critical analysis of mass surveillance and American political corruption. A must read each day.

1: RNZ

You have to check RNZ daily just to watch CheckPoint, but you also get some of the best journalism on events that are occurring in NZ.

GUEST BLOG: Arthur Taylor – Xmas mail, New Serco allegations, and Peter Leitch

4

Xmas mail

People outside prison often find it hard to comprehend that inmates’ mail is often delayed, not just for security checks , but for officers to pass mail around and read it for personal amusement. I’ve heard discussions about inmate mail myself, but its difficult to prove wha , in any other institution, would lead to disciplinary action or even sackings for such extreme Privacy Act breaches. High profile inmates such as myself often have mail delayed, especially if we are advising another inmate on their rights . Recently an inmate received 5 delayed letters at once from me.

I’ve many times had inmates complain to me of their envelopes being swapped over to cause them embarrassment with the addressees . If they complain to inspectors, they are told they (the inmate) must have made the mistake, because there is “no evidence” of an officer doing it. Under the Corrections Ac , where inmate mail which is delayed or withheld, the inmate must be advised, but this very often doesn’t happen. As with anyone’s mail, unrelated third parties can be adversely affected if an inmates mail is delayed or censored . Some Corrections officers don’t seem to care about prompt mail delivery . We need transparent systems and real accountability to make them care .

New Serco allegations

Remember this name , Jeremy David Lightfoot, appointed by Ray Smith as National Commissioner of Corrections and bought here from the U.K….His only qualification(from the University of Sussex) appears to be in engineer projects. What he was responsible for was developing leisure facilities in the U.K. and Business management. Commenced his career in London working for local authorities in project management and from there moved into private sector roles developing social infrastructure projects ,P.P.s P.F.I. transactions . He has NO background whatsoever in working in or managing Prisons.

Since he became National Commissioner he has presided over one disaster after another and has been protecting his “baby” SERCO e.g. refusing to release any of the reports on the performance of the Wiri SERCO Prison , and covering up the reports he was receiving about the fight clubs at Mt. Eden .

Even Judith Collins criticised him for failing to release the Wiri performance reports . He has good reason to suppress these as I am reliably informed that the I.D.U. rate (positive drug test results) at SERCO Wiri is at least 25%….i.e. one quarter of the prisoners have tested positive for drug use.

Units are being locked down for 22 hrs a day because of the serious violence fighting and gang influence in them which SERCO can’t seem to control any other way.

We’re now receiving prisoners back here from SERCO who are rapt to be out of SERCO. We’re seeing them in the numbers we had  in the Mt. Eden fight club hey day. The only thing SERCO Wiri is getting good marks for is in the quality and quantity of the food they get there .

Did Corrections Dept National Commissioner Jeremy Lightfoot leave his UK employment under a cloud ? 300,000 pound loss for the division he managed for the year ended only 2 months before his departure. Hmmm? The 2 previous years had also been poor , with operating profits of 300,000 pounds (2007) and 80,000 pounds (2008) . However, the year AFTER Mr Lightfoot’s departure , profit was 1,000,000 pounds . Here’s an excerpt from the Annual Report .

“Revenues for 2009 were 1.3 million, a reduction of 38% over the previous year. The division reported an operating loss of 0.3 million. Net cash proceeds of 4.2 million from the sale of subordinated debt and equity were received in December The disappointing operational performance was largely owing to the delay in achieving financial close on an outstanding leisure PFI contract with Bristol City Council.

Management and Staff The Managing Director of PCS, Jeremy Lightfoot left the company on 26 February 2010 having decided to relocate to New Zealand. A new executive management team of experienced staff will lead the company through the early months of 2010 while a decision is made as to whether or not to recruit a new Managing Director”

Jeremy Lightfoot led Parkwood Consultancy Services (PCS)in the UK ; part of the listed company Parkwood Holdings Plc .

PCS project managed the building & later maintenance of leisure centres , schools and other public facilities under Public Private ventures with the like of local Councils.

He helped build dog kennels, not prisons.

On arrival in New Zealand in 2010 , he joined Corrections to project manage the Public Private venture with Serco . Unfortunately , he seems to have strayed from his core competency in building management to the management of individual prisoners.

Prisons are not dog kennels.

How has this been allowed to happen ?

And finally, I’ve always thought of Sir Peter as very tolerant . When his stores first started , he sent bones to the prison for the bone carvers here . He also employed ex inmates . A storm in a teacup ?

5:DONALD TRUMP’S PICK FOR SPY CHIEF TOOK HARD LINE ON SNOWDEN, GUANTANAMO, AND TORTURE

COLLEAGUES OF FORMER Sen. Dan Coats, R-Ind., describe the septuagenarian as competent and congenial — the “Mister Rogers” of Republicans, as Sen. Cory Gardner, R-Colo., said — but his positions on issues including NSA surveillance, Edward Snowden, torture, and Guantanamo Bay are bound to spark arguments with civil libertarians as Congress debates his nomination today by President-elect Donald Trump to succeed James Clapper as director of national intelligence.

In 2013, just one week after former NSA contractor Edward Snowden came forward as the source of documents revealing the global extent of the NSA’s mammoth surveillance regime, Coats penned an op-ed for the Wall Street Journal lambasting the disclosures and the ensuing media coverage.

“Unfortunately, the Obama administration — especially of late — has fueled people’s distrust of government, which has made the reaction to Mr. Snowden’s leak far worse,” he wrote, pleading with his colleagues in Congress to stop “mischaracterizing” the surveillance programs Snowden exposed.

3: UK MPs urge probe into Israeli plot against politicians

Senior members of parliament have slammed comments made by an Israeli diplomat on plans to “take down” the UK’s deputy foreign secretary over his criticism of Israel’s settlement policy in the occupied West Bank.

Emily Thornberry, the Labour Party’s shadow foreign secretary, called the statements by Shai Masot – a senior political offficer at the Israeli embassy in London – “extremely disturbing” and demanded a probe into the potential extent of political “interference” in the United Kingdom.

Masot’s comments were secretly captured on film during a six-month undercover operation by Al Jazeera’s Investigative Unit, which reveals plots by the Israeli diplomat and a British civil servant to destroy the careers of senior politicians .

“It is simply not good enough for the Foreign Office to say the matter is closed. This is a national security issue,” Thornberry said in a statement.

The hearing for retired General James “Mad Dog” Mattis as defense secretary has yet to be scheduled. As national security adviser, retired Army Lieutenant General Michael Flynn does not have to be confirmed by the Senate.

1: UK’s Brexit approach is not muddled at all, says Theresa May

Theresa May has denied the government’s approach to Brexit is muddled and indicated she will prioritise control of the UK’s borders over access to the single market.

The prime minister said the UK would be able to secure control over immigration after it left the EU and would then negotiate “the best possible trade deal” with the rest of Europe.

In her first broadcast interview of the new year, May said: “Often people talk in terms as if somehow we are leaving the EU but we still want to kind of keep bits of membership of the EU. We are leaving. We are coming out. We are not going to be a member of the EU any longer.”

Sir Bruce Slane a great communicator – New Zealand Law Society

0

The death of Sir Bruce Slane means the legal profession has lost a great communicator and campaigner for individual rights, New Zealand Law Society President Kathryn Beck says.

Sir Bruce died yesterday, aged 85. In a long career of service to the public and the legal profession he was 19th President of the New Zealand Law Society, from 1982 to 1985. Sir Bruce was New Zealand’s first Privacy Commissioner, from 1992 to 2003, and also chaired the Broadcasting Tribunal from 1977 until its abolition in 1990.

“As our first Privacy Commissioner Sir Bruce established the framework for our current privacy codes of practice and laws to preserve individual rights to privacy,” Ms Beck says. “Alongside this was his work with the Broadcasting Tribunal, where he promoted the public right to a free and balanced exchange of information.

“In the legal profession he was renowned for his openness and great communication skills. While President of the New Zealand Law Society he wrote a regular column in the national magazine LawTalk and ranged widely and entertainingly over many different topics.

“This continued afterwards and he was also a newspaper columnist, hosted radio talkback, and was a prominent member of the Communications and Media Law Association.

“His passion for preservation of individual rights and freedoms was a hallmark of his life. This included time serving as a council member of the International Bar Association.

“Our society owes a great debt to Sir Bruce for the contribution he made to the difficult task of balancing individual rights to privacy with the need for an open society where there is a right to obtain information on matters affecting everyone.”

NZ Labour taking former Police cheerleader Greg O’Connor on as a candidate will be their final mutation into National lite

25

The rumour mill is swirling that NZ Labour are about to anoint former Police cheerleader Greg O’Connor a Labour Party MP who will look to knock out Peter Dunne, (the MP who made Helen Kelly a criminal), in the marginal electorate of Ohariu.

How Green Party voters are supposed to vote for a right wing thug like O’Connor will be a huge ask for the Memorandum of Understanding.

It’s a smart move for a Labour Party that has moved further and further to the right on law and order as it senses the electorate might be turning and no one should forget that Labour in office last time helped build the Prison Empire we are now shackled with.

Labour can do redneck law and order bullshit just as well as ACT, National and NZ First can.

O’Connor could prove to be the perfect candidate however. Hard enough to keep the lynch mobs happy he could also surprise if he announces he’s standing to help shepard through Parliament a brand new legislative structure to regulate cannabis.

Quietly behind the scenes, Cannabis supporters have challenged O’Connor privately on his hard line against cannabis and he was recently in America talking with US Police forces that have legalised cannabis to see the result. Apparently  it was a very eye opening event for O’Connor and he has changed his position radically.

If Labour can bring a former tough on crime Police cheerleader into the fold to legislate for cannabis in the electorate seat held by an MP who refused to legalise medicinal cannabis and forced Helen Kelly to be a criminal, that would be a political coup.

If that Greg O’Connor doesn’t turn up for Labour, then his appointment will simply be Labour’s  final mutation into National lite.

LeitchGate Day 6 – kill Phil Gifford – the truth about racism in the Land of the Wrong White Crowd

18

Day 6 folks.

Day 6.

A 23 year old Millennial performing a classic over share moment by crying on social media has managed to dominate and suck oxygen from any other news for 5 days in NZ now.

The country has divided into two camps, the tiny fraction of very loud voices on social media who have no concept of how alienating they are screaming RACIST and the vast majority of everyone else who are saying, ‘well hold on, didn’t Peter say ‘Waiheke Island is a white mans island too’, that’s not racist is it’?

Today the new target of white men to kill for racism is dear old Phil Gifford…

…Phil of course won awards in 1981 writing against the Springbok tour, but that was over 4 decades ago so he must be racist now.

Phil responded…

…what a racist.

That we are at day 6 is incredible folks. Day. 6.

You want the truth about racism in NZ folks?

Is NZ racist? It sure as fuck is!

Last year our Police force admitted they were ‘unconsciously biased’ towards Maori! Maori lost 95% of their land in less than a century! The cultural and societal interaction with Pakeha almost killed the entire race of Maori! Land was stolen and reparations pitiful! 10 000 NZers are in prison and over 60% of them are Maori! 300 000 kids in poverty are many times more likely to be Maori! Education systems fail Maori! Health systems fail Maori! CYFs steal Maori children with barely anyone noticing! Vast numbers of beneficiaries who are Maori are penalised by debt they will never be able to pay off!

Despite promising sovereignty from the Treaty, the truth is Pakeha have done a shit job of living up to that obligation and the last 30 years of neoliberalism has breed a culture in denial about that.

We have real racism in NZ and casually racist skirmishes inside an elite winery look petty in comparison.

Desperately attempting to claim some old duffer like Peter Leitch and now someone like Phil Gifford are racists for what they have said belittles racism.

‪The ability of the Left to tear itself to pieces over identity politics on social media is the best advert Bill English and National could ever hope for.

Can we get to Day 7?

What Corporate Hollywood tried to do behind your back and why they are trying to paint NZ as pirates

10

Corporate Hollywood wanted to hide their submission to the Government on the  “digital convergence” that former Broadcasting Minister Amy Adams had conducted.

They didn’t want NZers to hear what they were saying about us behind our back to the Government. Stuff.co.nz had to threaten launching an Ombudsman complaint before Corporate Hollywood and the Culture and Heritage Ministry  agreed to releasing it 12 months after it was submitted.

The piracy claim is bollocks, but this isn’t actually about piracy, it’s about control over our culture.

America is fighting a hot soft war in the Pacific by flooding us with their movies, their songs, their TV shows, their internet. They will constantly be trying to gain more control and more power over our media as part of their push back against China. The danger for us is that Corporate Hollywood have managed to have their interests adopted as national security interests. America is attempting to claim jurisdiction in cyber space, that’s what Kim Dotcom’s legal case is really all about.

Corporate Hollywood will claim we are pirates behind our backs to gain more power over the internet and we shouldn’t be blind to their attempts to rob us of our online cultural sovereignty.

‪Just because the Russians were glad Hillary lost doesn’t mean Iraq has WMDs – deny that drum beat for war at every step

6

This is what American democracy looks like on the receiving end…

After only dropping 26 171 bombs last year, the Military Industrial Complex was hoping for an enormous injection of business from war hawk Hillary Clinton, they’re worried Trump wants to build populist infrastructure at home rather than bomb the shit out of their latest global game of chess.

The sudden drum beat for war with Russia based on the bullshit intelligence that was released this week sounds like the same drumbeat used to con the world that Iraq had WMDs.

The truth is the public information released is a joke. Of course the Russians would be pleased Hillary lost, that’s hardly proof that they were involved in hacking America’s election.

Even the information released in 2016 by the independent investigators who originally looked into the hack could only find that whoever did it used the same tactics the Russians use.

None of this is proof or evidence of a Russian hack.

But let’s say they did. Let’s say Russia was behind hacking the DNC and passing that information along to Wikileaks – what was revealed?

The hack revealed that the mainstream corporate  media colluded with high ranking DNC members to bias the the campaign against Bernie Sanders and it showed how the DNC conspired against Bernie.

Shouldn’t the voters of America know how the DNC really operates? Continually blaming Russia for their loss allows Hillary Clinton Democrats to ignore the fact that it was their own free market neoliberalism that burnt them and that Hillary was a terrible candidate.

So beyond an ill defined impact on the out come, isn’t it an hypocrisy beyond arrogance for the US to complain about Russia trying to impact  their election?

America is a country that has interfered with the elections of 45 other countries. Complaining that Russia might have hacked their election to reveal the truth of bias within the Democratic Party is hardly the red menace of Communism come to feast upon the soft children of capitalism is it?

I watched my generation get conned into the bullshit war in Iraq over weapons of mass destruction that never existed, we should resist this latest drum beat for war with Russia. I say that as someone who recognises that Putin is a thug and Russia an authoritarian regime, but conning us into declaring some proxy war based on fake intelligence is not a way forward.

Trump is stupid enough to blunder into declaring war via twitter, let’s not help him.

Trump’s latest twitter fight with Arnold Schwarzenegger highlights his cult of resentment

8

You don’t appreciate what a narcissistic sociopath Trump truly is until you read his tweets.

This is the next President of the United States of America boasting ingloriously about his ratings in comparison to Arnold Schwarzenegger’s hosting of his old tv show

Forget post-truth, this is post-reality! Trump’s pettiness is the true insight into the culture wars that have propelled him into the Presidency.

Trump understands the power of resentment in a socio-economic sense. He has forever been laughed at and mocked by the Billionaire class of America. He knows the burnt cheeks of resentment and how it can fester.

That festering has been breeding within the white working class for decades. Free trade neoliberal globalisation has robbed these working whites of their economic strengths and the constant mocking of their status alongside a perceived loss of privilege has generated the cultural grudge that Trump has seduced.

Hillary Clinton Democrats can not look beyond their own cosmopolitan elitism to appreciate why the working poor would turn on their free market globalisation and that in turn generates even more cultural friction as the debate descends into two sides screaming past each other.

Trump’s thin skin and aggressive defensiveness is a symptom of what exclusion politics ultimately produce. That someone like Trump with such emotional insecurity and juvenile lack of maturity can ultimately become President of the United States suggests this cultural and political dislocation is far deeper, far more traumatic and far more bitter than any of us ever thought possible.

2017 will be a dangerous year of the fact blind basing decisions on their hurt feels.
