Communities across New Zealand are organising against the rapid expansion of hyperscale data centres, with a protest taking place and a new regional page launching in Taranaki in response to the latest announcements.
#StopDataCentresNZ is calling for an immediate halt on new hyperscale data centres until strong, enforceable protections are in place for public land, water, electricity supply, households and local communities.
The protest will highlight growing concern over the scale and speed of these developments. At the same time, a new Taranaki page has just been established after the latest announcement linked to potential hyperscale activity in the region, including interest around Stratford. Locals there are already raising questions about power demand, water use and the impact on households and productive land.
The national campaign continues to focus on key protections:
– Ban hyperscale data centres on public and conservation land
– Put household power before corporate server farms
– Ensure electricity costs are not passed on to families and small businesses
– Protect water, farmland and the environment
– Require transparency, independent monitoring and proper public consultation
– Give the Commerce Commission a clear role in protecting household electricity affordability and supply

“These projects are being pushed forward with limited public input and without clear rules that put New Zealanders first. Tomorrow’s protest and the rapid formation of a Taranaki group show that communities will not sit quietly while our power, water and land are treated as unlimited resources for offshore interests.”
