Why living downstream from a glacier has become a deadly liability
Living in the shadow of the world’s spectacular, ice-capped mountains has always carried dangers, but the devastating flood wave that carved a path of destruction on the Nepal-China border this week shows how life for the millions worldwide who live downstream of these peaks is becoming more unpredictable and more deadly.
It’s too soon to know what role climate change may have played in the catastrophic flooding, but what is clear is that mountains are changing fast as temperatures rise, melting glaciers and destabilizing slopes leading to complex, cascading disasters.

There is a terrible cruelty from climate change.
Those who have not had a hand in creating the vast amount of emissions that cause it are the ones feeling the worst of its impact.

Pacific nations threatened with sea rise level face the same cruel irony, as do Indigenous people who bore the brunt of the first wave of exploitative capitalism only to be pushed out to the fringes of society where they face the full brunt of catastrophic weather events.
We are in the age of consequences now, there is no pretending any longer, climate change is here, it is real and the impacts only keep getting worse.
Climate change is no longer a science issue, it is a culture issue. The Right who have denied climate change for fear of what it does to undermine their economic agendas simply don’t want to admit they were wrong all this time.
They don’t want to admit Māori were right.
They don’t want to admit the Greens were right.
They don’t want to admit the Environmentalists were right
They don’t want to admit they were wrong.
But they are wrong and the catastrophic events coming our way will splinter the NZ Political spectrum within a decade as the realities of climate change feed a new militancy where those deniers will be hunted down.
There is a terrible reckoning coming, those deniers need to start building their walls and gated communities now.
